Netanyahu: If Saudis want normalization deal, ‘we expect them not to align with anti-Israel forces’

The world seems largely to think that Israel is so eager for normalization with Muslim countries that ordinary conditions don’t apply. Saudi Arabia has already made it clear repeatedly that it considers no normalization possible without Israel’s return to its pre-1967 borders (aka “the Auschwitz borders”), and the Saudis also expect that East Jerusalem would be established as the capital of a Palestinian state. For the Israelis to accept such conditions would be utter madness.

Israel also has its own expectations; those expectations, however, are reasonable and mandatory for Israel’s very survival. Netanyahu has now stated that he is not interested in Saudi Arabia if it aligns with anti-Israel forces such as Turkey (whose attitude toward Israel is akin to that of the Islamic Republic of Iran) and Qatar. Both countries are Hamas supporters. And Saudi Arabia has manifested some disturbing trends itself, particularly since October 7, but even before that. To wit:

And Qatar has long been an open supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoot Hamas.

In the latest sign that a normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia is not going to be signed any time in the foreseeable future, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that he is closely following Riyadh’s recent shift toward Turkey and Qatar.

“We expect from anybody who wants normalization or peace with us that they not participate in efforts steered by forces or ideologies that want the opposite of peace,” Netanyahu said at a press conference in response to a question by The Times of Israel.

Normalization between Israel and Saudi Arabia seemed to be a question of when, not if, before the October 7, 2023, invasion of southern Israel by Hamas and the subsequent war. Two Israeli ministers made unprecedented visits to the desert kingdom in the weeks before the attack, and the Biden White House was pushing hard for a deal….

  2. The two worst enemies not only of Israel but America aren’t China, Russia or Iran. It’s Qatar and Saudi Arabia. For years these two despotic, evil Islamic entities have funded the spread of Jihadist ideology in the USA and anti-American and anti-Israel activists on university campuses. Muslims hate other types of Muslims and they kill each other with glee, that’s just being Muslim. However they unite not just in the effort to destroy Israel but also to bring down America. Saudi Arabia and Qatar host American bases to use America as its security guards against rival Muslims. That doesn’t mean that they don’t hate us and work feverishly on our demise. For all the good Trump has done he is subverting it by allowing these Jihad supporting regimes to have influence on his administration.

      I agree w/ you on Qatar, but Saudi Arabia is still an open question. Since 2017, Riyadh has been cleaning up its act, and much to their chagrin, Doha hasn’t, but there has been no action against the latter. There have been geopolitical noises by Erdogan of resurrecting the Ottoman empire, which the Saudis, Egyptians and others found disconcerting, but nothing was done against that either. Particularly after Trump’s return, seeing how Qatar and Turkey are being appeased by DC, the Saudis have now decided to jump on it, and have a military alliance w/ Turkey and Pakistan, one that they opposed during Trump 45

      Israel’s top enemies are Qatar and Turkey. Iran is too stupid to know how to play the taquiyya games, despite being shi’a, and in any case, their regime looks like on the verge of collapse. It doesn’t take much diplomatic effort by Jerusalem to get at least the US to oppose Iran, thanks to the “Death to America” chants by the islamic guards. But Qatar, w/ 5x the per capita GDP of any of its neighbors, has the money to buy not only congresspeople in DC but also flip influential people like Tucker Carlson, so it’s an uphill task for Jerusalem to persuade DC of how dangerous they are. We saw that when Israel tried bombing the Hamas office in Doha last year, and then was forced to apologize. Then there is Turkey, who Trump admires b’cos Erdogan seems “strong”! They’re still a part of NATO, in fact, the largest NATO military outside the US, so opposing them will be nothing like opposing Iran

      As for the US, our #1 enemies are not Saudi Arabia or Qatar. They are China and Turkey. China now owns every Leftist regime there is in the world, like the Soviets used to during the Cold War. As for Turkey, they have countries that support them in the islamic world from Malaysia to Algeria, as well as Turkic allies like Azerbaijan. W/ some effort, they could even potentially win over the Turkic -stans, which are members of the Organization of Turkic States. In short, both these countries are capable of having virtual empires that span both Asia and Africa, and that is more of a geopolitical threat to US than Russia, Iran or North Korea

      That said, about the muslim hatred of other muslims, they do have a limit. Yeah, the Saudis and their neighbors hate the regime in Iran, but unlike Israel, they hate the idea of Iran no longer being islamic. Already Pahlavi has said that whatever the other changes that happen there, two things are certain: the new Iran will be secular and democratic. Overlay that statement of intent w/ the factoid that now b/w 60-80% of Iranians are no longer muslim of any denomination, and that country will be far more attractive to international, non-muslim tourism and investment than even the Emirates. Which is why they have a vested interest in Iran remaining a failed state like Somalia

  3. This is good. For a while, he seemed hung up on normalizing relations w/ Riyadh. Glad that he’s off it, particularly since Saudi Arabia seems to be backpedaling on some of their progress in international relations. I don’t completely blame them, given the sort of passes we’ve given Qatar, Turkey and Hamas

    Since all our Gulf allies have openly refused to let us use their air space in our operations against Iran, once that regime falls, we need to withdraw the security umbrella that they have courtesy US. Israel is not a pre-emptive threat to them, and we still don’t recognize Turkey as an adversary, while Pahlavi has said that Iran will be hostile to nobody. So there is no reason for us to dedicate any assets to protect them.

    • Saudi has just done a U turn though regarding America attacking Iran. They’ve been saying ‘no, don’t do it’ but a few days ago said Trump should.

  4. Robert Spencer correctly forecast after the 12-day war in June that the Saudis would lose interest in normalizing relations with Israel, since Iran no longer appeared to be as much of a threat to them.

      I think you are right. Actually, at the time, I didn’t think that countries like Emirates or Saudi Arabia might renege, but now, it looks like the latter has lost its appetite for normalizing relations. I actually think that that is a result of the easy treatment that Qatar has gotten, despite not changing its behavior
