Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan welcomed Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Riyadh yesterday to discuss “developments” in the region; namely “to prevent the shameless crimes of the Zionist regime in Lebanon, in continuation of the crimes in Gaza.”

One year ago, Saudi Arabia and Israel were supposedly on the brink of a deal to normalize relations.
That deal has seemingly evaporated as Iran’s foreign minister visits the kingdom on Tuesday to discuss efforts to halt Israel’s incursions into Gaza and Lebanon.
“Our dialogue continues regarding the developments in the region to prevent the shameless crimes of the Zionist regime in Lebanon, in continuation of the crimes in Gaza,” Iran Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said in a video broadcast on state media.
He added: “Starting today, I’ll begin a trip to the region, to Riyadh and other capitals, and we will strive for a collective movement from the countries of the region… to stop the brutal attacks in Lebanon.”
The Saudis share a longtime strategic partnership with the U.S. and are the largest purchaser of its weapons. But in recent years, they’ve had a political rapprochement with Iran….

I have a few questions about Islamic law in regard to a Hudna. My understanding is that it can only be for 10 years maximum based on the Treaty of al-Hudaybiya, but can be broken once the Muslim army has regained sufficient strength.
1) How does one explain the “peace treaties” between Israel with Jordan and Egypt? While these have been “cold peace” treaties, they have been longer than 10 years. Does a Hudna provide an extension beyond 10 years if the Muslims don’t believe they can conquer the infidel nation?
2) How does one explain the Abraham Accords? Are these to be considered Hudnas, and therefore temporary cessations of hostilities until the Muslims are strong enough again? Or is a simply a matter that the signers of these agreements are not in observance of Islamic law as it pertains to warfare and they were only signed out for the economic benefits of the countries’ rulers and/or a common defense against the Shiites in Iran? Are they temporary like a classic Hudna?

I think most Islamic states just do whatever tehy consuder most advantageous for themselves–and for Islam. There are examples–especially the Treaty of Hudabiya–but I doubt many hard and fast rules.

Does it matter to the Saudis that it was Iran behind the attacks on Israel from Hamas and Hezb’allah? Maybe, maybe not…

The Saudis want to and do support jihad, but they also don’t want to give up the western oil gravy train.. They are playing both sides. But don’t count out their support for Hamas.
