A dangerous situation is building in Syria, far worse than what prevailed during the tenure of former President Bashir al-Assad. Turkey’s role in Syria is troubling enough, and now the latest news includes Muslim Brotherhood supporter Qatar’s growing role in Syria: “Azmi Bishara, Senior Advisor To Qatar’s Emir, Warns Al-Sharaa’s Syrian Government: Normalization With Israel Is Not An Elixir But Poison; Giving Up The Golan Reflects A Weak National Identity,” MEMRI, August 20, 2025:
On August 19, 2025, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and General Intelligence Service Director Hussein Al-Salamah met in Paris with Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. This meeting, brokered by U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack, followed an earlier meeting between ministers Al-Shaibani and Dermer, also brokered by Barrack, on July 24, 2025. According to media reports, the meetings dealt with tactical and security issues related to the tensions in southern Syria.[1] However, it may have been part of a broader development. In the recent months there have been many reports about U.S.-brokered contacts between Israel and Syria towards a possible security agreement that could form the basis for eventual normalization between them.
Amid these developments, and in the context of U.S. President Donald Trump’s desire to see Syria joining the Abraham Accords,[2] Azmi Bishara, a senior advisor to Qatar’s Emir Tamim Bin Hamad Aal Thani, recently spoke out against the calls for normalization between Israel and Arab countries, especially Syria.
Bishara, a former member of the Israeli Knesset who defected to Qatar in 2007 after being suspected of spying for Hizbullah, is now a prominent figure in Doha’s decision-making circles and is involved in many research institutes and media outlets there. In a July 14, 2025 interview with Al-Araby TV, which is part of a media network he oversees,[3] Bishara called on the Arab states to think how to “punish” Israel instead of rewarding it by normalizing their relations with it, and stressed that normalization with Israel has not solved the economic problems of Egypt and Jordan and is therefore unlikely to produce economic prosperity for any Arab state.
Bishara made similar arguments in an article he published earlier, on July 2, in the daily Al-Arabi Al-Jadid. In this article he lamented the calls in the Arab world to normalize relations with Israel and to expand the Abraham Accords, and expressed disappointment that “there are Arab regimes willing to reward Israel” for the war in Gaza. Normalization, he said, meant siding with Israel in its war against the region and would only encourage this country to persist in its language of force and in issuing dictates when dealing with Arabs.
As for the issue of Syria, Bishara wrote that normalization with Israel would not be “a magic potion” that would solve this country’s problems – for this belief is just a delusion and a sign of ignorance. He dargued further that, if Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s government relinquished the Golan, it would signal the collapse of Syrian nationalism and prioritize sectarianism and regionalism over national belonging – which would sabotage the building of Syria as a modern state.
It should be noted that, since the fall of the Assad regime and the consolidation of the new Syrian government, there are signs of growing Qatari influence in Syria,[4] as well as signs of growing influence by Azmi Bishara himself on the media discourse there, to an extent that has sparked comment and criticism in the country.[5]
It should further be mentioned that the position voiced by Bishara in this article and the subsequent interview aligns with Qatar’s opposition to normalization with Israel[6] and with this country’s efforts in the recent months to open a new front against Israel from Syria in the guise of popular resistance. The Al-Arabi Al-Jadid daily, which is part of the media network Bishara oversees, has served as a major platform for articles and reports inciting Syrians to wage armed resistance against Israel.[7]….
Considering the position of the senior advisor to Qatar’s Emir, one needs to remember that Qatar (as well as Turkey) is a chief supporter of Muslim Brotherhood. According to the Counter Extremism Project, the Muslim Brotherhood “has had a profound influence on the belief system that fuels al-Qaeda and ISIS. These groups share ideological underpinnings based on the writings of the late Brotherhood ideologue Sayyid Qutb.”
As is widely known, Hamas is an offshoot of Muslim Brotherhood. One must also keep in mind the views of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) toward Israel. Most OIC members do not recognize Israel as a state, and even among the few that do (Egypt, Jordan, UAE, Morocco, Bahrain, Sudan, and Turkey — although Turkey is extremely hostile), ALL THE nations of the OIC support a two-state solution under the specific condition: that East Jerusalem be established as the Palestinian capital. Supporters of this idea, which would require the Jewish state to give up even more territory for the formation of a 23rd Arab state, include those states which normalized relations with Israel. The establishment of a Palestinian state, which would further imperil what remains of Israel, cannot happen. The OIC has declared that the Palestinian issue of resistance is the central issue of the Muslim ummah, and it repeats this regularly.
This is the grim reality of Islam vis-a-vis Israel. So now consider Bishara’s statement that “if Ahmad Al-Sharaa’s government relinquished the Golan, it would signal the collapse of Syrian nationalism and prioritize sectarianism and regionalism over national belonging – which would sabotage the building of Syria as a modern state.” A jihadist state is being established in Syria, right on Israel’s border. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s hostility toward Israel is no secret. Turkey was responsible for facilitating and backing the jihadist regime that is now governing Syria, and it is virulently opposed to the state of Israel. Turkey’s defense ministry has just announced that “it will provide weapons, military equipment and logistical support to Syria under a newly signed defence agreement.”
Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa was and remains an Al-Qaeda jihadist, contrary to his al-taqiyya ploy to fool the West. Al-Sharaa has promised to “liberate Jerusalem next.” He has strong backing from Qatar and Turkey eventually to attempt this.
It is worth keeping in mind as well that Turkey’s view of Israel isn’t much different from Iran’s. Erdogan has compared Netanyahu to Hitler, and declared: “Whoever is on the side of Israel, let everyone know that we are against them.” During Eid al-Fitr remarks he made in April, Erdogan demanded that Allah “damn Zionist Israel.” The Turkish president has demanded that Israel withdraw from Syria, and even threatened to enter Israel to protect Palestinians, stating: “Just like we entered Karabakh, just like we entered Libya, we will do [something] similar exactly to them.” Erdogan also “accused Israel of threatening security in the Middle East during a phone call with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.” An article in The Atlantic referenced Erdogan as “perhaps the greatest danger to the Jewish state in the Middle East.”
Those who do not see how American interests are intertwined with Israel are suffering from willful blindness. This malady usually afflicts leftists, but is now being seen on the right as well, and is dividing the MAGA camp. That Qatari “expert” should keep his advice to himself. It’s only due to Saudi intervention that the US has ended hostilities w/ Syria, and to an extent, so has Israel. As for signs of weakness, HTS doesn’t even control Syria’s skies, and neither do their handlers in Ankara. Israel does. Syria’s never getting back the Golan, and if it keeps up its jihad against the Druze, it could risk losing even more territory to Israel, who the Druze apparently want to be a part of

Qatar should be invaded for aiding terrorists against Israel. Israel can have the foreigners who run their oil stay and just run it into Israelis pocket instead. Same for all the other oil rich arab nations supporting terrorists. Israel can probably take most of them over easily. Send them back to the desert but keep their foreign workers.
