Fr. Murphy’s loving heart is admirable. All too often today, however, people confuse love with niceness, which in this case would mean not challenging the boy’s jihadist sentiments and trying to disabuse him of them. He will have to attend a “deradicalization” program, but those are predicated upon the false assumption that the true Islam is peaceful, and thus that all that needs to be done is show jihadis how they’re misunderstanding Islam. Since they aren’t, this doesn’t work, and has never work anywhere it has been tried.
“Irish teenager sentenced to eight years for Islamist attack on army chaplain,” Press Association, April 29, 2025:
A teenager who was radicalised by Islamist extremist content online has been sentenced to eight years for the attempted murder of an Irish army chaplain.
The court heard that the boy had planned to kill a member of the Defence Forces as a form of protest.
Father Paul Murphy was stabbed seven times with a hunting knife while attempting to drive into Renmore Barracks in Galway at around 10.35pm on August 15.
The teenager, then aged 16, was arrested at the scene after being restrained by Irish soldiers.
The circumstances in which this happened are as terrifying as they are extraordinary
The boy, who cannot be identified because of his age, pleaded guilty to attempted murder earlier this year at the Central Criminal Court in Dublin.
Giving his impact statement in April, Fr Murphy said he forgave his attacker before hugging him.
After Mr Justice Paul McDermott handed down the sentence on Tuesday, Fr Murphy embraced his attacker again in the courtroom….
Mr Justice McDermott sentenced the boy to 10 years in detention with the final two suspended with several conditions, including that he engages with de-radicalisational and educational programmes….
Fr Murphy said afterwards: “It’s very easy for us to fight hatred with hatred, and the world just becomes entrenched in hatred, and that’s the way the world is at the moment.
“I think St John says that God is love, and if we believe God to be love, well then we know that love is stronger than hate, and so to respond to hate with love will hopefully create a different world for us all to live in.
“This young boy is going to prison for a few years.
“My only hope and prayer is that he will return to society better able to manage his own life and also to make a more positive contribution to society….

The “love option” is overused. This is one of the fewer areas where I have a disagreement with Christianity. I don’t want to turn the other cheek and love my enemy—NOT AT ALL. I want to fight and terminate my enemy.

Christians do not have be pacifists, infidel. I don’t know the details but is the concept of a just war. Mainly Christians in world war two beat the shit out of the Nazis and Japanese so I would say Christians can or used to be able to fight quite well needed. A lot of Christians these days seem to think that being a passive doormat is the way to go. The poles and Hungarians are still fairly religious Christians and they have the right attitude to Muslims. They tell them to piss off. All our countries should do the same.

Agreed, Tim.

Infidel,
A lot of people get it wrong about Christianity. Enemy is wider term, including those who disagree, and God requires a Chrisitan to love them. For those spitefully using a Christian he is required to pray for them. So here he might not be irritated and may not hate but leave things to God. I have so many hating me for no cause and I keep away from them.
Christians are worse in understanding what Christ teaches, especially looney teaching of some traditional churches. Would I go to police against a criminal who stabs me or ransacks my house? Definitely yes. What is wrong in going to govt when the question of law comes to play? Can I forgive him? Yes, but he must pay to the govt for the deeds he did. Some Christians don’t even love self (when God Himself has created us that way and He understands our condition very well) I guess the Catholic church is a forerunner in teaching this kind of looney stuff, whereas the bible clearly tells us to take care of ourselves and then others. Catholics are the worst when it comes to knowing Bible or God’s way of dealing with man and His followers. The devil might be the gainer here because that church doesn’t encourage discipleship would rather teach looney stuff.
You will notice that Catholic countries fall prey to islam easily because it is a fertile ground for others to sow there. Now of course even UK is not far behind.
Bye for now.

Christian pacifism, if it is Biblical, should be accompanied by spiritual warfare, which means that we deal with evil at its source, rather than “killing the messenger”. Islam is demonic, and we need to deal first and foremost with the spiritual forces that are at work in it.

Pacifism forces others onto the front lines, which is not Christian.

I think that if Jesus had encountered Islam he might have been less inclined towards forgiveness and love thy neighbour.
He would have seen the evil in it.
Did Jesus ever say love the devil ?
But Father Murphy is correct that there is a lot of entrenched hatred in the world today.
He has been on the sharp end of it.
Some folk never learn.

Are the Irish having any second thoughts, yet, as far as their love affair with Muslims and Palestinians in particular? If not, I guarantee they are gonna have lots and lots of opportunities to respond to hate, with love, as the good Padre advises. That’s because the dear Muslim objects of their affections have lots and lots of hatred to offer, as they enrich the Emerald Isle with their growing presence.

Crown I am not Irish but with respect for your views I think you are being unfair to the ordinary folk in Ireland.
They are being betrayed by the their leaders just as we are in the UK and most of Europe.
Thousands and thousands were out on the streets of Dublin protesting over last weekend.
In a village called Coolock locals have protested fought the police and burned down buildings proposed for a migrant hostel several times .
There are many instances of such protests all over Ireland and it is growing
The UK and Ireland have been bad neighbours in the past and we saw terrorism on the streets of Britain, bombings and soldiers killed. The IRA incidentally received a lot of funding from people in the USA and that only really stopped after 9/11 when Britain stood alongside America after you yourselves had suffered from terrorism.
Having said that I am not prepared to condemn the Irish who are now fighting for their freedom again.
It’s easy to criticise from the sidelines. The Irish Government like Starmer’s UK Government will persecute and imprison their native citizens who even speak out against the invasion of their homeland by third world scumbags.
And neither the Irish nor the British have the right to bear firearms, women cannot even buy or carry pepper spray to defend themselves here.
There seems to be no political way out and Christians leaders across the board stupidly posture about love and forgiveness.
Pushed into a corner ordinary native people are coming to the view that they must fight for their women and families physically.
Or go down.

A true Christian responds should be to protect innocent law abiding people (including naïve Catholic priest) from violent blood lusting jihadist .Would you cage a wild animal that threaten men women and children? If he is jail in humane conditions ,feed ,given medical care is that not Christian? The first order of Christianity is to protect the flock from bodily harm in a humane manner from the criminal who want to kill members of the flock .Cannot lead Christians to a Christian life if you let jihadist kill them all ? That is my opinion the first order of priest ,Rabbis ,and elected officials is to protect the people they serve from physical assault and murder ,that is first before any other duties .Why do leaders in the west try to delete or subvert this duty in the 21 century.

As a Christian I have thought that I should a more turn the other cheek attitude towards Islam. Ideally, we would shut Muslims out because they are bound to try to impose all the barbaric, evil filth of islam on non Muslims. Plenty of Christians went to war in a very justifiable war and smashed Nazism in world war two. To shut Islam out would be best but smashing an evil such as islam seems justifiable to me. It is them or is when it comes evil islam. There is no possibility of getting along peacefully with islam and it’s followers. Muslims evil Koran. Tells them to kill non believers so there is no getting peacefully with them. If Islam wins what a dark ages would be imposed on the human race.
Tim gallagher says
I just had another thought on this issue and that is that Christ always seemed to say to the people he dealt with, sin no more, but Islam condones endless evil, sinful acts such as killing non Muslims, pedophilia with its child brides, etc, so I think christ would tell Muslims that would have to go and sin no more by ditching evil islam which condones so much obviously sinful, evil behaviour.
Dina Collins says
First he cast out the Demons! When was the last time we cast out a demon??
Tim gallagher says
Good point, Dina. Islam is such a load evil filth that I am sure Jesus would condemned it completely. Plenty of demons need to be thrown out of Muslims that is for sure.
Hoi Polloi says
First, “The boy, who cannot be identified because of his age, pleaded guilty to attempted murder”……. This idea of protecting children has not worked as a policy. Serious crimes, particularly those motivated by violent ideologies, should be handled as adult crimes.
There was a term in use, sloppy agape, that I haven’t heard lately that always comes to mind in these cases. I’m sure the priest is sincere, but I’ve seen too much damage done by people who take forgiveness too far and who impact others negatively by withholding the stick in the name of the love they want credited to them. Eight years minus whatever they take off the sentence is ridiculous and then this violent perp will be back on the streets. What will all that forgiveness do when he stabs little girls in a dance class? Christian forgiveness has well-defined limits.
tgusa says
I’m fed up these, it’s OK I still love you, people. It is not about them it is about the next one and the next one and the next one. We are concerned about the future and you father are the past. You already got you 7 knife wounds bud so sit down and shut the hell up.

Jesus took a whip to the money-changers doing their secular business…making money off the required sacrifices of the faithful…in His Father’s House.
Jesus condemned His enemies for their many deceptions….”serpents, offspring of vipers, whitewashed graves, dirty cups”…and asked them how would hey “flee from the Judgment of Gehenna.”
The Psalmist wrote: “Oh, you lovers of Jehovah, hate what is bad.”
The misunderstanding many have when it comes to the evils committed by others, helps no one. Hugging this would-be murderer only encourages him as he knows the guy doesn’t really *love* him….as the creepy teen doesn’t know the meaning of love.
Mary says
💯👍 CORRECT
Hoi Polloi says
Yes, love includes tough love and the foundational command that as one does, so shall it be done unto him. First degree rape requires the death penalty in The Bible, and we could use more of that. There’s no command to climb off your hospital bed and track down your would-be killer to offer him or her absolution that he or she never sought. There is significant language about wiping out cults that sacrifice children.
Most of the language directed at forgiveness is reserved for fellow Christians with the allowance of no further requirements for those acting against you if they won’t reform. You can forgive for your own good, between you and God, but that doesn’t negate the issue of legal action and it doesn’t extend to crimes against others; that’s between those parties. A violent perp is a threat to all, therefore a matter of justice rendered.
I think too liberal a notion of forgiveness is harmful to those who believe it’s required of Christians in a way that is not Biblically supported.
JustPassingThru says
If Charles ‘The Hammer’ Martel had this Father’s attitude towards Islam there would be no Europe. What we as a civilized society call hate, for Islam is a religious calling. Allowing Muslims of any type in our countries is allowing evil in. This youth is an example. All Muslims must be expelled from Western countries. Their so called religion is a ideology cloaked in a religious costume to fool us. Our ancestors knew better.
࿗Infidel࿘ says
One of the few reasons I’m glad I’m not a Christian. “Love your enemy” is not what my faith recommends
somehistory says
Too many people misunderstand what “love your enemy” means for a Christian. Even many who claim to be Christian, do not understand what it means.
It does not mean what this preacher is doing. It means we don’t do our enemies harm; and we hope that they change.
Jesus said that “God makes it rain upon the good and the evil and makes His sun shine on the good and the evil.”
But, He gave the Law about who would actually receive a *blessing* and it wasn’t those who ignore His Laws and do evil.
So we as Christians do not have to feel about those who hate us as we feel about our family, relatives and friends. We do not have to forgive those who are unrepentant.
And “turn the other cheek” is not for cases like this it’s for those times when someone steps on our toes …and we don’t retaliate.
Mary says
It’s the sun shines on the righteous and the unrighteous.
somehistory says
Various translations say the same thing with different words.
And God is the One Who makes the “sun shine” and the “rain fall.” That’s the important point….upon all people.

Jesus said to his disciples, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.”
Now why would he say that? I dont think he was telling them to get a sword so they could use it as a toothpick.
As a Christian, in war and defense of my life and loved ones I love my enemies most when they are dead.
