The phrase “a leopard can’t change its spots” applies perfectly to the al-Qaeda linked jihadist Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, who changed his name to Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa as part of his efforts to convince the West that he has changed. What al-Sharaa is really after is the imposition of Sharia in Syria and Western aid that he can use to build this new Sharia state.
In mid-January, Saudi Arabia embraced Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and al-Sharaa, and also called on Western leaders to lift sanctions. Now the Saudis are helping al-Sharaa gain legitimacy globally. We can hope that the gullible West won’t fall for it.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa made his first trip overseas since his formal appointment as head of state on Sunday, receiving a warm welcome in Saudi Arabia.
Sharaa, formerly known as “Abu Mohammed al-Jolani,” is a wanted terrorist and leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an al-Qaeda offshoot. HTS won the Syrian Civil War, which lasted nearly a decade and a half, in December after longtime dictator Bashar Assad fled the country. Assad received political asylum in Russia, leaving HTS in charge of the country.
Sharaa has spent much of his time in power promising Syria’s many minority groups, including Christians and Kurds, that he would build an “inclusive” government and urging global powers to invest in his regime. To comfort concerned free nations, Sharaa has abandoned his jihadi nom de guerre and now wears Western-style suits, but he has repeatedly defended Islamist rule and suggested that he would impose a sharia regime.
“People who fear Islamic governance either have seen incorrect implementations of it or do not understand it properly,” Sharaa told CNN shortly before HTS’s conquest of Damascus.
The “Military Operations Command” of HTS, the de facto ruling government of Syria, announced last week that it would officially install Sharaa as its president, dissolve the Assad-era constitution, and grant Sharaa the power to establish an interim legislature to pass new laws. The Command promised to dissolve HTS and all other militias emerging from the Civil War, eventually seeking to turn them into a functional Syrian armed forces. I think I saw a very recent video of a Shi’ite shrine in Syria being demolished. Iranian Shi’ites are very concerned that the shrine of Zaynab, the sister of their Imam Hussein, may be desecrated by the new Sunni rulers. It is not that I am worried so much about the sensitivities of the Shi’ites. But if the new rulers are unwilling to respect the concerns of non-Sunni Muslims what are the chances that they will respect the rights of the many Christian minority groups within Syria much those of the Druze whom they regard as apostate heretics?

I think the Saudis may be trying to win over HTS from Turkey, so that Syria doesn’t become a launching pad for further incursions into Arab territory, such as Jordan and Iraq. Our foreign policy in that region should be to renew the Arab opposition to jihad, so that these countries coalesce against Turkey and Qatar once again. Syria should be managed closely by the Arab regimes like Saudi Arabia, so that they don’t get too rich or too powerful too fast and emerge like they were during Hafez al-Assad’s regime

I don’t defend Russia much these days, but to be fair to them, they did try to save the Alawite regime to the end. It was only when they saw the Baathists fleeing from city to city before surrendering that they decided to cut their losses so that HTS would be okay w/ them retaining Tartus port and the Hmeimim air base
What sealed Assad’s fate was a combination of circumstances – the destruction of Hizbullah in Lebanon, the military decapitation of Iran by Israel and Russia being completely diverted in Ukraine. HTS saw its chances and grabbed it

The benefits arising from such a move are endless… The kingdom of sodom would get the prestige and glory emanating from such a humanitarian deal, Syria would get endless funding, israel could stabilize gaza,… and of highest importance… the pallies would still have something to complain about. This is only a few benefits that would arise from such a plan.
