Canada: Palestinians sue Foreign Minister Melanie Joly over arms exports to Israel

A group of Palestinian Canadians and “human rights lawyers” are suing Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly in an effort to stop military exports to Israel that “they argue violate Canada’s obligations under domestic and international law.” The Liberal government of Canada voted in favor of a UN resolution demanding an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire” in Gaza in December, but that didn’t suffice for supporters of the Palestinian “resistance.” A month later, the CAIR offshoot known as the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) canceled a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over what the group considered a weak stance by Trudeau on Gaza, accusing him of “failing to protect Palestinians” and not doing enough to prevent “Islamophobia.”

The irony is that the Trudeau government has a long record of imposing the “Islamophobia” subterfuge on Canadians, with help from the NCCM, a group that also isn’t shy about expressing its deeply-held views regarding the Palestinian “resistance.”

A few examples:

In 2021, during Operation Guardian of the Walls, the NCCM urged the Canadian government to “condemn the attacks on Al-Aqsa Mosque” and sent out a petition for supporters to:

Send a letter to Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mélanie Joly today to demand that our government:

• Publicly condemns the Israeli incursions onto Al Aqsa and the killing of multiple civilians over the past few weeks violence.
• Works with their counterparts on the ground to work towards a peaceful resolution of the situation before further violence breaks out.
• Chart forward a clear and public vision for how to hold Israel, one of Canada’s allies, accountable for repeatedly breaking international human rights law.

In 2017, I was dismissed by the Trudeau government as a director of the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) for writing for Jihad Watch and criticizing Sharia supremacism. The Foundation is under the jurisdiction of the Heritage Department, of which Melanie Joly was minister at the time. The NCCM had “expressed concerns and sent a formal letter to the government” prior to my dismissal. A few years later, the former communications director of the NCCM, Amira Elghawaby, became a director at the CRRF herself, leading strategic communications there. Fast forward to January last year: a backlash erupted in Canada over Trudeau appointing Elghawaby as his “special representative” to combat “Islamophobia.” Meanwhile, Mohammed Hashim became Executive Director of the CRRF. Hashim was described in the Toronto Sun as the “spin doctor” behind the coverage of the infamous Toronto Danforth shooter, Faisal Hussain, and a “driving force behind the National Council of Canadian Muslims.” According to the Sun, “The man who has presented himself as the point of contact for the family of Faisal Hussain is a professional activist who has reportedly committed himself to ‘framing a new narrative of Muslims in Canada’ and creating a “national political movement.”

Hashim also tweeted after the 2022 jihad terror hostage-taking incident at a Texas synagogue:

The Heritage Department also paid for an extremely antisemitic “diversity” consultant, Laith Marouf, who called Jews “loud mouthed bags of feces”:

Marouf went on to launch the pro-Hamas Free Palestine TV.

No amount of appeasement and bowing to Islamic lobbies has worked out for Trudeau, whom the NCCM now treats as persona non grata, as do the other activist Muslim lobbies he has attempted to appease. Ditto for Melanie Joly, now being sued by Palestinian Canadians, Al-Haq and the Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR). “Palestinian-Canadians, lawyers sue Foreign Minister for military exports to Israel,” Middle East Monitor, March 5, 2024:

A coalition of Palestinian Canadians and human rights lawyers is suing the federal government to block Canadian military exports to Israel…..

…. The lawsuit specifically names Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly and Justice Minister Arif Virani.

The coalition said it wrote a letter to Joly calling for a halt to the export permits but didn’t get a response.

Al-Haq is an independent Palestinian non-governmental “human rights organization” based in Ramallah. In December 2021, the NCCM posted on its website: “Canadian civil society, groups, collectively call on the government of Canada for more action to protect Palestinian Human rights defenders.” Among the groups named was Al-Haq.

Ayman Oweida, a Palestinian Canadian and one of the lawsuit applicants, stated:

Canada’s contempt for international and Canadian law by approving a dramatic increase in military exports to Israel since the latter commenced its bombardment of Gaza compels us to seek legal action to hold Canada to account.

The Trudeau government has bent over backwards to appease highly demanding Islamic lobbies and their leftist supporters. Now those lobbies are claiming that the government has not done enough. No amount of appeasement is ever enough to satisfy Islamic supremacist lobbies and their water carriers, all of whom support the Palestinian “resistance.”  Yet on the heels of the Palestinian lawsuit announcement, Trudeau is now resuming funding to UNRWA, whose staff participated in October 7 and called Israeli captive women “sabaya,” that is, sex slaves, the term used for them in Islamic theology.
