With courts validating forced conversions and marriages, Pakistan’s Hindus are disappearing

The near-eradication of Pakistan’s Hindus has gone largely unnoticed because the global political and media elites have resolved never to say or do anything that might reflect negatively upon Islam. This tendency is so pervasive that even when there is an entire group of people about to be erased from the earth, as in this case, nothing is said or done about it, because any recognition of what is going on here would reflect negatively upon Islam.

…abduction of Hindu and Christian girls, rapid conversion certificates, forced or coerced marriage, and courts that treat the matter primarily as one of personal religious choice while the girl remains with the abductor. Multiple independent sources, including the Movement for Solidarity and Peace, Aurat Foundation linked studies, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, Centre for Social Justice reports, and United Nations experts, have estimated on the order of 1,000 such cases annually. Recent UN expert statements (2024 and 2026) found that roughly 75% of documented victims in recent periods were Hindu and about 80% of incidents occurred in Sindh. Adolescent girls aged 14 – 18 are heavily targeted, with many being younger. UN experts have specifically noted that forced marriages and conversions are sometimes validated by courts through religious law, leaving victims with abductors rather than returned to parents. Child marriage laws are inconsistently enforced, and bills seeking to criminalise forced conversion have been repeatedly blocked.

This is not merely social prejudice or “Islamic othering.” It is institutional othering, written into law, enforced by the state, and enabled by official and unofficial bodies. Pakistan’s constitution reserves the offices of President and Prime Minister exclusively for Muslims under Articles 41 and 91. A 2019 attempt to open them was blocked in parliament. Every citizen must declare religion on their passport. Enemy Property legislation enabled the seizure of ancestral land and farms belonging to Hindu families who fled or were displaced during and after Partition, systematically stripping communities of livelihoods. Islamabad still has no functioning Hindu temple. Construction approved by authorities was halted in 2020 after Islamist protests, forcing Hindu residents of the capital to travel more than 40 km to Rawalpindi. Blasphemy laws create an additional climate of fear. Police, local courts, and powerful political and religious figures have repeatedly failed to protect minority girls or treat abduction and coercion as criminal acts rather than religious outcomes.

The demographic evidence is stark. According to the 1941 Census of India, Hindus constituted approximately 14.6% of the population in the territory that became West Pakistan. By Pakistan’s 2023 census, the Hindu Jati category stood at roughly 1.61% (about 3.87 million), with Scheduled Castes (largely Hindu) adding another 0.56%, for a combined share near 2.17%. Absolute numbers have risen modestly with overall population growth, but the proportional collapse is sustained.
