French justice too often becomes strangely lenient with those accused of antisemitic acts. Near Avignon — and thus the storied pont d’Avignon — at an Auchan superstore, an Irish expat ran into an Australian couple. They struck up a pleasant conversation until he discovered the couple were Jewish. Then his grin became a grimace, and he threatened to murder the wife. A court in Avignon, in southern France, gave Patrick O’Brien, a 60-year-old Irish citizen, a six-month suspended prison sentence on Friday after convicting him of making antisemitically motivated death threats and of justifying crimes against humanity, a criminal offense in France. O’Brien had threatened to kill a Jewish couple from Australia during a confrontation at a supermarket.
The judges also ordered him to pay the woman and her husband €500 [$560] each, and rejected prosecutors’ request to ban him from France for three years. Jewish organizations that joined the case criticized the sentence, arguing that it was too lenient to serve as a deterrent.
The fine wasn’t much — the sort of sum you pay if you are caught littering on a city street in Singapore. O’Brien was to give a grand total of $1120 to the couple, because he had told them that it was “a shame Hitler didn’t finish the job,” and furthermore, that if he had had a gun, he would have put a bullet in the woman’s head. Not exactly a sprightly causerie.
The incident took place on August 11 at an Auchan superstore in Le Pontet, near Avignon. The Australian couple had struck up a friendly conversation with O’Brien, a Dublin native, about the French national soccer team jersey the husband was wearing. When the conversation turned to Ireland’s policy toward Israel, O’Brien became aggressive and made antisemitic remarks.
“It’s a shame Hitler didn’t finish the job,” he told the couple, according to their testimony. When the woman took out her cellphone and began recording, O’Brien threatened to put a bullet in her head. The video went viral on social media, sparking outrage in France and beyond. The woman’s father is a Holocaust survivor, and members of her family were murdered at the Auschwitz death camp….
The court ordered O’Brien to pay each of the two organizations €300 [$335].
$770 to C.H.A.R. and B’nai B’rith, and $1120 for the couple, adds up to the insultingly small sum of $1890.
After the video spread online, investigators from France’s gendarmerie, a national police force, identified O’Brien using the supermarket’s security cameras and tracked him down at his home in the Avignon area. He was arrested on August 26. Digital devices seized from his home contained additional racist content, according to prosecutors, including remarks targeting people from developing countries.
So Patrick O’Brien had enough hate left over to post it online. And Jews were apparently not his only target.
Avignon prosecutor Stéphanie Huin said O’Brien admitted making the statements but claimed they came during a heated argument about Ireland’s policy toward Israel. She said he expressed remorse and explained that he had lost his temper. During the trial, he portrayed himself as someone opposed to violence, described himself as “a committed humanist,” and said he has health problems.
Nothing says “I am a committed humanist” like yelling at a Jewish lady that “it’s a shame Hitler didn’t finish the job,” and threatening to put a bullet through her head.
It was a missed opportunity. Justice demands that these Hitler-praising antisemites not be fined, but find themselves in prison pent. Something along the lines of six months would do nicely. That should curb the enthusiasm of antisemites such as Patrick O’Brien. They can think what they like, but some things, if expressed, will be punished. And that prison need not be a dark oubliette, a dungeon, a château of Chillon. A regular prison will do. Had Patrick O’Brien been given such a sentence in Avignon, he would have endured the company of a great many Muslims in the same cell block. And that might have lessened his antisemitism.

Remember, Ireland during WWII remained officially neutral and denied the UK any naval bases. Moreover, Eamon de Valera, at the time Taoiseach (Prime Minister) when Hitler committed suicide, extended his official condolences to Germany.
You would think that a people who were oppressed by another people, as the Irish were by the English (and herein lies England’s blackest mark though England by any measure historically has been one of the greatest polities of all time), would have learned more than it has.

On Friday I accompanied my husband to his appointment at the endoscopy center. While I was waiting, a man came in. He was spouting random profanity,althought he did seem to have an appointment. He was also wearing the odd combination of camo pants and Birkenstocks. Mostly I tried to ignore him.
But after visiting the nurse’s station again, he suddenly yelled, “Zionists! F*ck them all to hell!”.
Everyone in the waiting room flinched–this seemed to be apropos of nothing.
