Sirajuddin Haqqani says that Taliban leaders do not follow Sharia. Western non-Muslims who know nothing of what Sharia is all about, but think they do, may assume that he means that the Taliban’s oppression of women, and its fanaticism, and its ultra-rigorism are contrary to the true tenets of Sharia, which are benign and life-affirming. This is, however, not what he meant. He showed no sign of disapproving of any Taliban policies; after all, he is part of the Taliban government. He is simply saying that the leaders need to practice what they preach and live according to the teachings of Muhammad. He is sure that doing so will bring earthly prosperity, for the Qur’an promises that.

Sirajuddin Haqqani, the Taliban’s Interior Minister, said at a ceremony in Andar district, Ghazni province, that the Taliban administration does not fully adhere to Islamic Sharia.
He said that the problem is that we are not even one step in line with Sharia, the path of the Prophet and our predecessors.
The Taliban’s Interior Ministry said on Friday, 6 November, that Sirajuddin Haqqani had attended a graduation ceremony for students at the Noor-ul-Madaris jihadist religious school in Ghazni province.
In his speech, Haqqani said that resolving the problems facing society and its people required individuals to first reform and purify themselves spiritually. He added that the main problem was that officials’ conduct did not conform to Sharia, the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad or the path of earlier Islamic scholars.
The Taliban’s Interior Minister said: If we spend every hour of our lives following Allah’s commandments, within the teachings of the Prophet and in the footsteps of our predecessors, then there will be no more problems or challenges….
