Remember that map of immigrant communities which left off Little Italy, the most famous ethnic neighborhood in New York City, not to mention Jewish and Irish areas, but listed Little Palestine, Little Yemen, and Little Pakistan?
Not a coincidence.
After boycotting most Jewish events and joining an anti-Israel vigil for Oct 7 (which ironically enough got overrun by Hamas supporters), the Pakistani Muslim politician decided to boycott the traditional Columbus Day parade. Typically he tried to bypass it by talking about some Italian Communist and holding a session with some of his political allies of Italian ancestry while blowing off the parade.
Many of New York City’s mayors have reveled in the chance to lead a large procession up Fifth Avenue. Not Mayor Zohran Mamdani — he practically made skipping parades something of a campaign pledge.
“There are many parades that I would not be attending because I’d be focusing on the work of leading the city,” he said last year…
Over the weekend, Mr. Mamdani made good on his pledge, to the dismay of some Italian American New Yorkers and the organizers of the city’s Columbus Day parades, who are not accustomed of being snubbed by City Hall.
A spokeswoman for Mr. Mamdani said on Sunday that the mayor would not be marching on Monday in Manhattan’s Columbus Day parade, which has a long tradition of hosting mayors going back decades.
Mamdani had time to attend an anti-Hindu protest and an anti-Israel Oct 7 vigil. He’s had time to rally for a violent gang member… and attend the Pakistan Day Parade.
But come on, he knows he’s not getting the votes of Columbus Day parade attendees. Polls show longtime New Yorkers didn’t vote for him. It’s all college students, hipsters and Pakistani settlers in Queens like him. By skipping the Columbus Day, he gets some more brownie points with the DSA and the Destroy America Caucus. And he doesn’t lose anything.
