Just days after Kolkata police arrested a Muslim police officer over allegations that he sexually molested a woman civic volunteer during Hindu festivities, another Indian Muslim sportsman has brought disgrace to the country’s international image.
Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh, a 40-year-old Indian para swimmer, has returned to India after Japanese police detained him over allegations that he sexually harassed and molested a female hotel employee during the 2026 Asian Para Games in Nagoya, Japan. The controversy has also prompted the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) to recommend the strictest disciplinary action against the athlete, including a possible lifetime ban from competitive para swimming.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 19, at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel in Nagoya, where the Indian para-swimming contingent stayed during the Games. According to reports, a female housekeeping employee entered Shaikh’s room to carry on with her duties when he allegedly engaged in misconduct.
The employee subsequently reported the incident to her superiors, who alerted the local organizing committee. Japanese police then intervened and took Shaikh into custody for questioning over allegations of sexual harassment and molestation.
The employee accused the Indian athlete of touching her inappropriately, making sexually suggestive gestures, attempting to grope her, and making unwanted sexual advances. She reportedly left the room and informed her superiors.

These allegations triggered an immediate response from the hotel management, Japanese authorities, and officials overseeing the Indian contingent. Members of the Indian delegation arrived at the hotel and found police officers and senior hotel managers already handling the complaint.
The incident soon threatened to overshadow India’s participation in the continental sporting event. The delegation had traveled to Japan to support athletes competing at the highest levels of para sport, but officials suddenly found themselves dealing with a serious misconduct allegation involving one of their own team members.
Japanese police took Shaikh to a local police station, as authorities examined the complaint. Japanese officials also considered formal legal proceedings and explored the available legal avenues. However, the Indian delegation intervened to address the situation, and reportedly submitted a written apology to the female employee while coordinating with the hotel management and local authorities. Japanese authorities then arranged Shaikh’s return to India on Tuesday, October 20, according to media reports.
The Paralympic Committee of India responded by reiterating its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct and behavior that violates the safety, dignity or rights of other people.
The committee will reportedly examine the matter, after which the relevant sports authorities will consider the allegations and determine the appropriate disciplinary response under the applicable rules. The committee also confirmed that its Chef de Mission had recommended the strictest disciplinary action against the swimmer, including a possible lifetime ban.
Shaikh hails from Bihar and lives in Mumbai. He previously held the world No. 1 ranking in the men’s 100-meter butterfly S5 and 50-meter breaststroke SB4 categories. He made a notable mark at the 2018 Asian Para Games in Jakarta, Indonesia, where he won gold medals in the 50-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events. In 2025, he added another achievement to his record by winning gold in the 200-meter breaststroke at the Reykjavik International Games in Iceland.
Despite his accomplishments as an athlete, Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh appears to have succumbed to Islamic attitudes towards women, particularly those of other faiths. The allegations against him raise troubling questions about the sexual objectification of women, especially non-Muslims, as taught in Islamic texts (cf. Qur’an 2:282, 4:3, 4:11, 4:24, 4:34, 23:1-6, 33:50, 70:30).
In 2014, Egyptian Islamic scholar Professor Suad Saleh sparked outrage after declaring on Al-Hayat TV that Muslim soldiers could enslave and have sexual relations with non-Muslim women whom they captured during a legitimate war to humiliate the enemy. She invoked the historical concept of wartime captives, ma malakat aymanukum, to defend the practice as an alternative to execution.
In October 2006, Australian cleric Sheik Taj Aldin al Hilali provoked widespread outrage when he compared women who did not wear headscarves to “uncovered meat” during a Ramadan sermon in Sydney, appearing to blame them for sexual assaults. He later denied condoning rape, claimed critics had taken his remarks out of context, and apologized to the women he had offended.
These are not merely the views of two Islamic preachers; rather, their public statements reflect what critics argue is a broader mindset among many Muslims, one that some openly espouse while many others privately subscribe to without voicing it.
India records an alarming number of sexual offenses against women. Greater transparency could help researchers examine comprehensive crime data, including offenders’ religious identities where the law permits such disclosure, and assess whether particular religious groups contribute disproportionately to these offenses relative to their share of the population. Such analysis could help authorities develop targeted corrective interventions. However, that remains wishful thinking, given India’s extensive leniency and secular outlook in dealing with such crimes. For now, the country must contend with the national disgrace brought upon it by an athlete it sent abroad in the hope that he would return with honor.
Dave says
If you care to check, Muslims are trying to immigrate to Japan.
Why? Simple. It is their way of invading a country, legally. Then, they take Japanese women for wives and try to breed out the native population. The other is to try and push/force Islam. For them, either way works and once the Muslim population reaches a certain percentage, they will start making demands, if they haven’t already.
I applaud the Japanese authorities for taking strong action, in this, and not letting it go due any ‘misunderstandings’ this cretin might have used to excuse his actions.
Every country can learn a lesson from this.
Huh?!? says
Islam follows a doctrine of sexual perversion. The treatment of women, girls and boys. Mo was a perv.
