Dutch young people who need social housing — housing, that is, which is subsidized by the government — have been told that they can “live with their parents” and that such housing must go first to immigrants who, of course, do not have such a possibility. When it comes to public housing in the Netherlands, the immigrants come first, while the native Dutch come after in the queue. Dutch Housing Minister Elanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan drew sharp criticism this week after defending priority access to scarce social housing for recognized refugees, arguing that many young Dutch first-time home seekers “can still live with their parents.”
In an interview with De Telegraaf, the D66 minister was asked why status holders — asylum seekers granted residence permits — should receive preference for social rental homes while Dutch “starters” face long waiting lists and delayed independence. She responded that “we see that a lot of starters can still, or are allowed to, live with their parents.”
Dutch commentator and activist Eva Vlaardingerbroek wrote on X that the policy amounted to “systemic racism.”
“And not just the ‘new’ newcomers. A 25-year-old Syrian who came here with his parents years ago jumps the queue for a home when he decides he wants to live on his own. Meaning a 25-year-old white Dutch guy can forget about getting his own place and ends up on waiting lists for 10+ years,” she wrote, adding: “Putting the interests of foreigners above the interests of the native population needs to end.”
Everyone who is “allowed” to come to the Netherlands must be provided with “a roof over his head”? Why? Why do the harassed Dutch taxpayers need to provide housing, and medical care, and so much else, to the Muslim migrants who arrive and claim to need asylum, but in truth are economic immigrants, hoping to batten on all the benefits the Dutch welfare system provides? Why are they owed anything?
The total cost to Dutch taxpayers of providing support of every kind to the migrants, who are overwhelmingly Muslim, include social housing, free medical care, free language classes and vocational training, family allowances, and more, by now amounts to more than 500 billion euros, a colossal sum. If this fact alone were made widely known to the Dutch, how many, do you think, would demand an immediate halt to such immigration? And how many will continue to tolerate a government that provides social housing to these immigrants ahead of the deserving native Dutch?
