Ilhan Omar and the Somali Immigrant Problem

Ilhan Omar is now being investigated for immigration fraud. There are three aspects to this investigation. First, there is a suspicion that in her father claimed her to be younger than her real age so that she could receive “automatic derivative refugee status for minors.” Second, the government is investigating if her father had covered up his own history as a military commander in the Siad Barre regime, since its commanders systematically tortured regime enemies and killed as many as 200,000 people. That would have been grounds for rejecting his claim of refugee status, and thus that of Ilhan Omar whose status depended on his. Third, they’re investigating whether Ilhan Omar married her own brother in order to get him admitted to the U.S.

But Ilhan Omar is only one example, albeit the most famous, of a larger problem with Somali immigrants. There are almost no records extant in Somalia about births, deaths, marriages, divorces, clan membership, and none about a person’s connections either to the murderous Siad Barre regime or to the Islamic group al-Shabaab. Nor is there a functioning criminal data base. When they arrive in the U.S., Somalis make up whatever biographical details will help them obtain refugee status. Somalis have not only been committing immigration fraud, but once in the U.S., have been engaging in massive welfare fraud that has cost American taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. In addition, Somali immigrants form criminal gangs at higher rates than any other immigrant group. And Somali immigrants have also been involved in terrorist acts, both in the U.S. and abroad.

The Trump administration’s ongoing fraud probe into Somali-born Rep. Ilhan Omar’s refugee and U.S. citizenship approvals carries much more importance than many Americans realize as this political theater unfolds.

The Omar affair highlights an underlying homeland security problem about the other 150,000 other Somali refugees let in before President Donald Trump mostly closed the Somali pipeline spigots and, most pertinently, about the thousands more hoping to get through after his 2029 departure.

Omar denies all wrongdoing, and she has not been tried for any crime. Regardless, the investigation should serve as a reminder to Americans that there are serious concerns about Somali refugees committing immigration fraud with impunity. When Somalis do lie to get in, they bring elevated risks of public welfare fraud and gang crime.

But perhaps most aversely: the potential for Islamic terrorism.

The pivotal moment in Somalia’s history with enduring US security implications

To understand some of the issues with Somali immigration, it is worth understanding Somali’s history since the January 1991 overthrow of Somali dictator Mohammed Siad Barre.

Until about 2013, anarchy prevailed in the Muslim-majority nation. No effective government existed, let alone a vital records office, to issue uniform documents like birth certificates, driver’s licenses, marriage and divorce records, or deaths. There were no effective law enforcement agencies to prosecute criminals and create a criminal history database.

No central government intelligence service existed to build computerized datasets of thousands of fighters recruited by the al-Shabaab terrorist group, which still rules large swaths of Somalia and exercises influence in neighboring countries. Atrocity-committing warlords, clan paramilitary groups, and al-Shabaab don’t exactly keep publicly accessible computerized membership records.

It gets worse. Warring militias destroyed almost every pre-1991 citizen record going back generations. The information black hole persists, as the State Department describes on its Somalia web page in its General Documents section.

With the almost total absence of records in Somalia of births, deaths, marriages, divorces, clan membership, and so on, it is nearly impossible for American immigration authorities to adequately judge who should be granted refugee status. We know there is a great deal of fraud in those applications for refugee status. We know that Somalis, once admitted to this country, have been engaged in massive welfare fraud as well. And we now have evidence of Somalis in this country being loyal to the terror group al-Shabaab, and carrying out terrorist acts on American soil.

Given our inability to obtain birth-death-marriage-divorce-clan records from Somalia because they do not exist, the most sensible course is to avoid admitting any Somalis at all. Should the investigation of Ilhan Omar prove she was wrongly admitted to this country, either because her father lied about her age, or because he hid his own past that, if known, would have prevented him, and hence his daughter, from being admitted, or even prove that she married her own brother to enable him to gain admission to the U.S., she would become a symbol of all that has been wrong about the admission of Somalis to our country. And that might lead to the almost complete halt on Somali migrants entering this country, currently in force because of Trump, to continue after he leaves office in January 2029.
