Syrian in Germany Recites Qur’an on Streets With Loudspeaker, Must Not Be Made to Seek Work: It Would Provoke Him

Amer G. is a Syrian “asylum seeker” living in Germany. He has not been deported, even though the civil war he was fleeing back in 2015 has ended, and the regime that supposedly persecuted him has now been overturned. He lives on benefits from the generous German welfare state. Oh, and one more thing — he has not been looking for work, nor will he be asked to find a job, because, you see, the mere request might “provoke” him to some violent act. So the authorities have decided to leave him be, to enjoy his life at the expense of German taxpayers. A homeless immigrant man will continue to receive benefits and not be asked to find a job by the Ennepe-Ruhr district job center in Germany, as the office says the man is dangerous and should not be “provoked.”

The man in question is Amer G., a Syrian asylum seeker who reportedly arrived in Germany in 2015 and has become known in Witten for publicly reciting verses from the Quran using a loudspeaker.

He’s been living in Germany and living on all the benefits the welfare state provides, for 11 years. In that time he has never worked, never sought work, and becomes angry if he is asked to seek work. Those benefits he receives are in his view his by right, a kind of proleptic jizyah. How dare Infidels demand anything of him? They are, after all, “the most vile of created beings,” and he, as a Muslim, is one of the “best of peoples.”

For years, residents have complained about Amer’s loud recitations. According to reports, he walks through Witten’s city center on a daily basis, while reciting Quran verses, sometimes in the early morning hours. Police and the public order office have been dealing with the man for a long time….

This reciter of Qur’an verses in the public streets, even early in the morning, is a public nuisance, a destroyer of calm, but apparently the police are too afraid to arrest him for that and lock him up until he promises to stop this public disturbance. Or, still better, government officials should deport him back to Syria, where he can chant Qur’anic verses to his heart’s content. What’s keeping them? Are they afraid he might be angered if put on a plane? Oh dear. Mustn’t do that.

The special treatment began with a memo dated August 7, 2023. Job center staff reportedly concluded that placement in employment appeared impossible because of Amer’s “background.” The decisive justification was that “potentially dangerous situations should not be provoked.”

The Syrian man was subsequently classified as “exempt from activation.” The reported arrangement means that Amer has largely been spared the standard measures applied to other benefit recipients, including regular appointments, training programs, and the requirement to actively seek employment.

He’s home free: no need for Amer G. to enroll in training programs, no need to interview for possible jobs, no need at all to seek employment. He will apparently, for the rest of his life, enjoy a free ride at the expense of German taxpayers, unless, of course, the no-nonsense Alternative für Deutschland party wins the next election and deports Amer G. back to Syria without further ado.

Amer G.’s propensity for violence is being used to exempt him from the utterly reasonable requirement that he seek employment. He’s implicitly threatening the state if it dares to make him look for work, or still more intolerable, to actually work if the opportunity presents itself.

Amer G. is considered a risk to others if the state dares to make him look for work, or still more upsetting to him, to actually work if the opportunity presents itself. And how will the case of Amer G. resonate among other migrants? They will see that his “propensity for violence” — his threat to react badly if it is merely suggested that he look for work — has allowed him to live without working or even seeking work. Why will other Muslims, pocketing their jizyah, not now go and do likewise?
