New York-based photojournalist Motaz Azaiza, who was evacuated from Gaza in 2024, discussed in a September 3 episode of Ahmad Biqawi’s podcast the choice of photojournalists in Gaza to refrain from filming residents of Gaza criticizing Hamas. He described most journalists turning the camera away when this happened and talked about his own inner conflict over whether he should publish such videos.
Azaiza said that today, when people accuse Hamas of committing massacres on October 7, they blame the civilians in Gaza who crossed into Israel, saying that they were the ones who did this, not Hamas. However, when they talk about “heroic” acts, they do claim to have done this. He compared this to playing with jelly or slime, saying that Palestinians are molded however they want – like slime.
Azaiza, an employee of UNRWA, was evacuated with his family to Qatar in 2024. He has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and has received multiple awards and accolades.
Motaz Azaiza: “When someone gets out of the ambulance and says something like ‘May Allah punish Hamas,’ and I’m filming him, and the people around him turn off the camera… I honestly couldn’t bring myself to look away from what he’s saying, or turn away the camera from what he was saying. Ultimately, he’s simply blaming his government, the one responsible for dragging him into a war like this.
“So, I was in a state of inner conflict at first. To be honest, I found it hard to publish things like this, at first. I mean, I don’t know, not everyone… I’ve never seen a journalist from Gaza publish something like this.”
Ahmad Biqawi: “Usually things like this are not published…”
Azaiza: “Right. If someone says something like this, many journalists lower the camera.

The short video appears to show Ms. Rachel, whose real name is Rachel Griffin Accurso, introducing Azaiza to her young audience while teaching the letter “M.”
“Hi, yes, it’s M, for my friend, Motaz. Yay! Bye!” Accurso said.
The video was originally shared on Instagram and later removed, according to reporting from July 2025.
Azaiza, who amassed millions of social media followers documenting the war in Gaza, appeared briefly in the clip and greeted Ms. Rachel.
The video also took on new significance after Azaiza described earlier this month what he witnessed during the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023, terrorist attack in an extensive interview with journalist Ahmed al-Biqawi on the Arabic-language “Taqarrab” podcast. Azaiza said he followed a vehicle carrying Israeli captives and filmed as members of a crowd assaulted them.
Azaiza said he didn’t publish the video, however, as he feared it could put the Palestinians involved at risk.
“I saw the vehicle of the Al-Qassam Brigades, and there were Israeli captives there,” Azaiza said. “People got out, watched, beat them, hit them, and I followed them and filmed. But I did not publish those videos. Why? Because I did not want to ruin the lives of the people who were filmed.”
Azaiza said he withheld the footage because he believed Israeli authorities could use it to identify the Palestinians appearing in the videos.
“I understood that Israel would use those videos to identify every person who was there and eliminate them,” Azaiza said. “I did not want to be responsible, even indirectly, for the deaths of those people in exchange for a few likes and views online.”
