Mohsen Mahdawi is now a graduate student at Columbia. Many of the liberal Jewish and civil rights organizations and lawmakers who protested federal efforts to deport Columbia University anti-Israel protest leader Mohsen Mahdawi are so far silent on new revelations about Mahdawi’s lengthy history of antisemitic and pro-terrorist social media posts.
Mahdawi, a graduate student at Columbia facing deportation for his role in campus protests, wrote posts over the span of 15 years that supported armed violence and called to “annihilate the Jews,” according to a 100-page investigation published Wednesday by journalists David Collier and Rachel Feldman — with Arabic-to-English translations confirmed by Jewish Insider.
Mahdawi, a 35-year-old green card holder and West Bank native, pledged in a 2010 Facebook post, “soon, very soon, we will annihilate the Jews.” He also praised Hamas and honored deceased terrorists in several posts on Instagram and Facebook, declaring that Palestinians have the capacity and conviction “to kill and to wound.”
Some of the posts were published as recently as 2024, while Mahdawi was an undergraduate student at Columbia, where he is now enrolled in the Ivy League’s School of International and Public Affairs….
There was plenty of antisemitic behavior by the pro-Palestinian students on various American campuses, including Columbia, where Mahdawi led the anti-Israel protests. At some, Jewish students were surrounded and held captive, while their captors screamed at them; they were prevented from going to the library, attending classes, or returning to their dorm rooms. Jewish and Israeli professors had their classes invaded by protesters who made it impossible for them to teach. Anti-Israel slogans were scrawled on the walls of Hillel buildings, such as “It is right to rebel; Hillel go to hell!” and protesters standing at the entry to those buildings chanted phrases like “How many kids did you kill today?” At several campuses, Hillel buildings were vandalized.
Should Mahdawi be allowed to exploit our free speech rights in order to spread a message of genocidal hate? What do Becca Balint or Bernie Sanders, or Peter Welch, who condemned Mahdawi’s arrest, say about Mahdawi now, when his many posts calling for the “annihilation” of the Jews have come to light? They are keeping mum, trying to figure out how to explain away these genocidal postings by the man they’ve all been supporting.
Jewish Insider says that “his extreme anti-Israel stance and support for terrorist groups has been public knowledge for years.” Was his support for terrorist groups “public knowledge for years”? If so, then Balint, Sanders, and company have some more explaining to do. Or do they think Hamas is not a “terrorist group”?
How inconvenient for the Real Mahdawi to be exposed from his posts as a genocidal antisemite, after so many of our leftwing Great and Good have worked so hard to protect him. And now they are trying to figure out what to say. Perhaps, they will claim, “the Mahdawi quotations must have been planted by Mossad; the Mohsen Mahdawi we know would never write such things.” Or, in the alternative, “Mohsen Mahdawi admits that at one time he thought such things, but that was long ago, and he thinks very differently today.”
Sorry. It just won’t wash. Those posts went on for fifteen years. Cut your ties to Mohsen Mahdawi right now. The longer you wait to do so, the worse it will be for you. Egg on your face is the least of it.
