In Once-Quiet Hamlets in the UK, Pensioners Fight Back Against Migrant Hotels

In “The Mouse that Roared” or “Tight Little Island” fashion, the people — pensioners for the most part — in a small English town, having been inundated by mostly Muslim “asylum seekers,” and with more threatening to arrive, are now fighting back. They are using the internet to post pictures of these young overwhelmingly Muslim immigrants as they swagger through the village, insulting the locals, stealing from the charity shops, and otherwise disturbing the peace. The people of Piddington, for that is the tiny town’s name, and other towns similarly affected now upload to the internet their own tales of being bullied by these unpleasant foreigners who have been imposed on them. At first glance, you would not guess that the pensioners enjoying coffee and cake outside the Yumy Café in Braintree, Essex, on Monday morning were far-Right thugs. Two of the ladies, Valerie and Chrissie, who are celebrating their 80th birthdays, are wearing matching tiaras. The group is in high spirits and there is lots of teasing and laughter. But if you listen to their conversation, in between talk of grandchildren going back to uni and the impossibility of ever seeing a GP, you realise these septuagenarians and octogenarians believe they are in the fight of their lives. Along with the villagers of Piddington and campaigners in Crowborough, all protesting against a frightening influx into their communities of illegal migrants, the Braintree pensioners find themselves on the frontline of the new Battle of Britain.

Ken, who wears a jaunty Union-Flag bucket hat and matching neckerchief, offers Lynette another coffee and she accepts. “Being a vigilante is thirsty work,” she smiles. Valerie joins in: “You know that’s what they call us, Allison? We are vigilantes, fascists, racists, far-Right just because we don’t want hundreds of men from God-knows-where in our town.”

“The Home Office doesn’t even know if they’re rapists or members of Isis. How is it safe to have them here?” demands Michelle, a campaigning mum in her thirties who supports the pensioners’ group and is one of the controversial local “auditors” who have taken to filming the migrants and posting the footage on social media to attract national attention. Michelle is determined that, just because Wethersfield, seven miles north of Braintree, “was the first” asylum centre and Braintree is “a low-class area” compared to somewhere like Piddington, it should not be forgotten.

Both of the birthday girls, Valerie and Chrissie, who are on mobility scooters, shock me when they say they have been abused and spat at. “We are 80 years old and we’ve been trolled on social media,” Valerie says. “We are told we should stop protesting and get a job. The migrants come out of the Salvation Army holding up £100 trainers, kissing the trainers, showing off all the treats they get. They give us the middle finger.”

They don’t?

“They do, Allison, they really do, they’re so rude and arrogant. Then they go and steal in the charity shops. When they get challenged, they say, ‘We’re allowed to take stuff because we’re asylum seekers’. One of them assaulted a member of staff, we’ve got it on video.” A nurse at the local hospital was sexually assaulted by a migrant she was treating in January this year. And another man from the Wethersfield centre was charged following the assault of a woman in May.

Valerie is describing some of the 1,000-plus illegal migrants who are being put up at taxpayers’ expense at Wethersfield, a former RAF base. (The total cost to set up and run the asylum accommodation centre through its projected lifespan to 2027 is an estimated £339m, although no one I spoke to believes it will shut next year. The annual running bill of over £30m was based on housing 600 men and there may soon be double that. The Home Office doesn’t make it easy to find out.)

Three hundred thirty nine million pounds, just to house, for 2-3 years, only 600 “asylum seekers.” Do the math, then shake your fist at the men in Whitehall.

Every day, a cavalcade of minibuses, up to four an hour, drops off scores of young, undocumented [illegal] males in this town centre, as well as in Colchester and Chelmsford. Meanwhile, the public bus service from the village of Wethersfield into Braintree has been discontinued. Just one thing locals point to as an example of the state prioritising the illegal incomers. The unfairness rankles.

In the old days, one could imagine a movie about the Piddington and Braintree and other pensioners doing battle with an unfeeling government that dumped a thousand Muslim migrants in the midst of their tiny village. It could have been shot both on site and at Ealing Studies, with Alec Guinness, Alistair Sim, Margaret Rutherford and, of course, husky-voiced Joan Greenwood playing the roles of these brave and bullied pensioners. It could still be made today, with other actors. Who, in the House of Commons or House of Lords, having read Allison Pearson’s piece in The Telegraph about the pensioners and the trouble-making illegal “asylum seekers” whom they now must endure in Piddington and elsewhere, will stand up in the Mother of Parliaments and denounce this wretched state of affairs? Who will demand that those “asylum seekers,” almost all of them fraudulent claimants, be deported back promptly to their countries of origin?
