A Maryland school board member posted that MAGA fears about women’s rights look small next to Sharia – and CAIR Maryland ran a brutal pressure campaign that made her recant, apologize in a packed board meeting, and agree to a mosque visit for “re-education.”

A woman on a public school board in Maryland posted one line about Sharia and women. Within days Maryland CAIR demanded a recantation, ran her through a packed board meeting, extracted an apology, and scheduled a mosque visit so she could be “educated.”

A foriegn Islamic terrorist organization made her submit on U.S. soil.

Baltimore County Board of Education member Maggie Litz Domanowski shared a Peanuts cartoon. Linus holding a sign: “If you fear MAGA will take away women’s rights, then you should learn about Sharia law.” Above it she wrote: “not wrong.”

It isn’t wrong. History, the mosque pulpit, and Islam’s own highest texts say the same thing.

Over the weekend the cartoon went up. On Monday CAIR Maryland told her to take it down, apologize, reaffirm the “equal dignity and safety” of every student or resign. She posted that the meme was gone. She says she pulled it before CAIR tagged her and before The Baltimore Sun wrote it up. CAIR says they demanded removal and she took it down right after.

By Monday the cartoon was down and she had already written the thing they still would not accept.

On Facebook she tried to give them the distinction they pretend to want. She said the meme “could have been interpreted as suggesting that Sharia represents all Muslims. That would be inaccurate.” She called Sharia a “broad religious, ethical, and legal framework.” She listed governments as if the problem were a few bad capitals: Egypt, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi guardianship, Iran, the Taliban’s ban on girls’ school. She even dressed Turkey up as a “secular constitutional system.”

That last claim is likely a token concession.. A state that squeezes churches, throttles Christian property, and treats non-Muslims as a managed minority is not “secular” in any sense that should calm an American school board. She was already sanding the point down: not all Muslims, not one code, not interchangeable with Kabul.

It did not matter.

They did not want a better map. They wanted the word taken off the table. A board member may criticize “particular governments.” She may not say Sharia while doing it. You can denounce the Taliban as a regime. You cannot name the order those regimes claim. The first is politics. The second is blasphemy.

Tuesday night they tore that statement up in public.

Removing the meme was “welcome.” The rest, CAIR Maryland director Zainab Chaudry told the board, was “not an apology.”

This is the same Chaudry who, after Hamas’s October 7 Islamic massacre, posted that reports of murdered Israeli babies were “fake” and compared Israel to the Nazis. Maryland put her on the state hate-crime commission, suspended her for those posts, then had to put her back because the law would not let the attorney general remove her. Lawmakers later took CAIR’s reserved seat off that commission. She supports BDS. That is who is now scolding a school-board mother over a cartoon.It did not “fully accept responsibility for the harm that was caused.”

Her “lengthy commentary about the Taliban, about Saudi Arabia, and other foreign governments” did not “address why we are here tonight.” Criticizing those governments, she said, was “fundamentally different from circulating a political meme portraying Sharia itself as a threat to our country.” Sharia, the lecture went, is prayer, fasting, charity, family duty – like halacha or canon law.

It is not.

Canon law is for Catholics who choose to obey it and choose how far. Halacha is likewise voluntary for Jews in America, including how strictly they follow it. Neither is forced on their own members. Neither is forced, or even requested, of people outside the faith.

Neither is the criminal code of Baltimore County. Catholic law does not run the county. Jewish law does not run the county. Neither assigns the unbeliever a duty to obey, or a penalty for refusing.

That is the difference they will not name.

Sharia is not only prayer. In the books, and in the states that enforce it, it is a legal order. It claims authority over more than the congregation. It writes family law, criminal law, tax, war, and apostasy into the same system as worship. Calling it “just like canon law” keeps the fasting and hides the statute.

CAIR says Sharia “requires Muslims to abide by the laws of the land.” Then it calls naming Sharia as a legal order that governs women in multiple countries “disinformation” and a “political scare tactic.” A board member who said that, they claim, told Muslim children their faith was “suspicious,” their identity “threatening,” that they “do not fully belong.”

So the next sentence was not a conversation. It was the price.

A “direct apology” that does not “shift responsibility onto those who were harmed.” Visit a Baltimore County mosque. Meet the neighbors. “If you refuse, then there should be consequences.”

They brought a room. They lectured her. They put faces in front of her and ran a coordinated pressure campaign. She broke.

“Hearing it from your voices and seeing your faces, I understand now,” she said. “And I am truly sorry.” She accepted Chaudry’s invitation. “I’m looking forward to understanding the Muslim community more than just [Sharia] law.”

CAIR issued the victory press release: she listened; she will learn; she will visit. This, they said, is why “speaking out matters.” Baltimore’s Fox station ran the apology as a feel-good clip and put CAIR’s win on TV.

Where are the lawyers? This was not a criminal case. It was extra-legal enforcement. No statute required the apology. No court ordered the visit. The First Amendment still covers the post. She was not prosecuted. She was processed. That is how a blasphemy norm arrives here — not as a bill titled Sharia, but as a resignation threat, a camera, and a press release.

Where is the women’s-rights machine? Silent. They will march over a cartoon about MAGA. They will not march over legal systems that veil, sequester, stone, and count a woman’s word and value as half..

Domanowski has three children in Baltimore County schools. Last year her own board censured her for asking budget questions of the superintendent. In August 2025 the Maryland State Board of Education reversed that censure as an “egregious abuse of discretion.” She knows the cost of standing up in that room. This time she paid it in public contrition.

This only keeps working if conservatives treat it as a clip instead of a campaign. Organize around the next target before the apology is written. Show up at the meeting, fund counsel, call the board, and do not leave the next official alone in the room to be canceled on schedule. CAIR already knows the play.

The rest of the right has to decide whether it will.
