Karam Majdi tried everything to stay in the UK He said he was a Syrian who needed asylum because of that country’s civil war, but he turned out to be Egyptian. He said he was “bisexual,” but he raped an English girl and offered no evidence — messages, photographs — of any interest in men. And now Karam Majdi will, at long last, be deported back to Egypt. A convicted rapist who claimed he should be allowed to remain in Britain because he is bisexual has lost his latest legal challenge against deportation.
Karam Majdi, 27, was sentenced to seven years in custody after raping a 14-year-old girl he had met online.
He was released from prison after serving a reduced sentence of four years. Now the government wants to deport him.
An immigration tribunal has now rejected his appeal, concluding that his removal from the UK “was and remains in the public interest”.
Majdi had argued that returning him to Egypt would expose him to persecution because of his alleged bisexuality.
However, Judge R Abdar found that he had failed to establish the claim and concluded that he remained a danger to the community.
“I am satisfied that the appellant has failed to rebut the presumption of the appellant posing a danger to the community,” the judge said, adding: “I am not satisfied that the appellant is bisexual.”
Majdi offered no proof of any homosexual activity. No messages received or sent, no photographs kept, of any of his supposed lovers. He made it up, on the spot, figuring his assertion of bisexuality would be enough for the British authorities. He figured wrong.
“The case dates back to 2017, when Majdi was living in a hostel in Hove before travelling to East Croydon, where he attacked the schoolgirl.
During his criminal trial, the court heard that he pinned the teenager down despite her protests.
The victim was left with severe bruising to her thighs, with Majdi held in a youth offender institution and released in 2021 after serving part of his sentence.
In other word, Majdi served only four years of his six-year sentence. Why was the sentence reduced? And why, given that he was 18 years old when he was sentenced, the age at which in the UK someone is considered to be an adult, was he held in a “youth offender institution” that is known to be much milder than a regular prison?
He has continued to contest his removal from Britain, claiming that he arrived in the country as an unaccompanied child after allegedly fleeing fighting in Aleppo….
That’s why he claimed to be a Syrian — he insisted he came to the UK after “fleeing” fighting during Syria’s civil war. He had no proof, of course, that he was a Syrian. And he must have spoken Arabic with an Egyptian accent that an interpreter at court would have picked up on.. Like a schoolchild blaming “the dog that ate my homework,” all of his identity documents were conveniently lost in transit — no doubt tossed overboard into the Channel by Karim Majdi himself.
Majdi represented himself during parts of the hearing after declining to use an interpreter requested by his solicitor.
He may not have wanted a native speaker of Arabic taking part in the court proceedings for fear that he would recognize Majdi’s Egyptian accent.
How hard can it be to deport Majdi, who lied about both his nationality and what is now called his “sexual orientation”? Once he was released in 2021, after serving only four-years of his already ludicrously mild sentence in a juvenile detention center for rape of a minor, he should have been promptly deported. Instead, he’s managed to delay that deportation for five years, now going on six. And he hasn’t been idle in that time. He’s been drug trafficking, caught with cocaine, to make even more money as a way to supplement all the benefits he is still receiving, courtesy of the British taxpayer.
Deport, please. As Shakespeare wrote, “in delay there lies no plenty.”
