The U.S. special envoy for Syria said Tuesday that Israeli airstrikes on a military air base in northwestern Syria constitute an “unnecessary escalation” that does not advance regional stability.
In a statement on X, Ambassador Tom Barrack said the United States was deeply concerned by the attacks and added that Washington was encouraging all parties to prioritize “logical discourse” over further military incidents.
The government of Syria’s Interim President Ahmad al-Sharaa has neither “adopted a predatory posture nor maintained proxy forces” but has repeatedly indicated a preference for de-escalation with Israel, Barrack said.
The United States has in the past, and will continue in the future, to host discussions to encourage “diplomatic cadence over kinetic frustration” for both nations, Barrack added.
The strikes early Tuesday caused material damage without inflicting any casualties, Syrian state TV reported.
State TV said eight strikes hit the runway of the Abu Duhur air base in the northwestern province of Idlib. It gave no further details.
There was no comment from the Israeli military on the attack. Turkish officials also did not immediately respond to requests for comment…

Israel is wise not to follow the lead of Barrack. It is clear to everyone that contrary to what he says, al-Sharaa invited Turkey to station troops and materiel at its base near Allepo.
Turkey’s incursion into Syria would’ve presented a major security threat to Israel. Israel can manage a Turkish threat based in Turkey, but the Allepo base is about 160 miles from the Israeli border, a 10 minute trip for a fighter jet laden with weapons because it can carry minimum fuel.
Barrack himself is of Lebanese origin, and as ambassador to Turkey, he seems to be batting for Turkey and not US or Israeli interests.
