Sixty thousand Muslims from Morocco, at their government’s encouragement, swam by sea and swarmed by land into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on July 30. The combined forces, and reinforcements, of local police and the Guardia Civil pushed them back. And just as quickly as they had arrived, faced with an implacable armed force, they went back to Morocco. Israel had nothing to do with the Moroccan invasion. But according to some Spanish officials and commentators who are obsessively anti-Israel, it was the Jewish state that encouraged the Moroccans to invade Ceuta in order to alarm Europeans about Muslim migrants, as if they were not sufficiently alarmed already. Diplomatic tensions between Israel and Spain continued to escalate after Madrid accused Jerusalem of fueling chaos over the migration crisis in its North African enclave of Ceuta, adding a new flashpoint to an already strained relationship between the two countries.
Earlier on Friday, Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon accused Madrid of exposing a double standard by deploying military forces to its North African enclave of Ceuta to curb a mass influx of migrants from Morocco.
“Spain, which never misses an opportunity to lecture Israel, has declared a state of emergency in Ceuta following the crisis over its immigration policy,” the Israeli diplomat wrote in a post on X. “Maybe before it continues lecturing us, it’s time it explained to the world why it still maintains colonial enclaves in Africa.”
In response, Spanish Transportation Minister Óscar Puente issued a sharp rebuke that appeared to suggest Israel was behind the crisis, promoting claims that Jerusalem was attempting to undermine Spain and contribute to instability within the country.
“Things are starting to become quite clear,” the Spanish official wrote in a post on X.
Even though Puente offered no further explanation, his comments were widely viewed online as a direct reaction to Danon’s accusations, with critics arguing that they appeared to suggest Israel was connected to the unfolding crisis.
Within hours, conspiracy theories surrounding Israel’s alleged involvement began gaining traction, with several public figures and commentators amplifying similar claims that Jerusalem was attempting to destabilize Spain over its position on the war in Gaza.
Sheer idiocy. Israel had nothing to do with the decisions that 60,000 Muslim Moroccans made to try to invade and remain in Ceuta, in the hope that they would then have their status quickly changed from “illegal” to “legal” migrant, in accordance with the Spanish government’s new policy to “regularize” the status of half a million illegal migrants, whom government fiat transformed into “legal” migrants.
In an Instagram post, Spanish political commentator Carolina Alonso accused the Jewish state of attempting to undermine Spain’s government, alleging that efforts to pressure Madrid were being carried out “through Morocco, with the support of Israel,” as well as Spain’s and Europe’s far right.
Oh, those diabolical Jews. How do they do it? How did the Jews, whom most Muslims despise and hate, manage to inveigle sixty thousand Moroccan Muslims to enter Ceuta, when, of course, trying to enter Europe would never have occurred to them?
It was not Israel, but Morocco that encouraged this massive surge of migrants into Ceuta. Morocco wants to put pressure on Spain’s government by relaxing border controls and allowing a massive surge of migrants into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta. This pressure aims to deter Spain from strengthening diplomatic and energy ties with Morocco’s main regional rival, Algeria, and to remind Madrid of Morocco’s vital role in European border security. Morocco was alarmed when Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez visited Algeria in July 2026 to discuss importing natural gas, sparking friction with Rabat. And Morocco is also alarmed by Spain’s shifting stances on Western Sahara, a territory that Morocco claims but which Algeria backs for independence. So Morocco chose to withdraw its guards from the border with Ceuta, which allowed 60,000 Moroccans to flow into the enclave, but when the Spanish police and Guardia Civil arrived in sufficient numbers, those would-be migrants beat a retreat back to Morocco.
Israel had no part in any of this, but when has the truth mattered to those who see the sinister hand of the Jewish state everywhere, such as Spanish Transportation Minister Oscar Puente, the political commentator Carolina Alonso, and a leading member of the Cortes, Gabriel Rufián?

When really desperate and out of ideas, blame the Jews. You’d think by now such a “recourse” would be universally panned (at least by non-Muslims since Muslims en masse live in a hopeless world) but, alas, it is not.
All of which very much tends to prove that man never learns. Some individuals learn (not nearly enough) but man as a whole never does. So, this is why a major fallback position for those who are deficient one way or another is to blame the Jews. Same old same old. Well, as I already stated, man never learns.

First things first: I support the Spaniards who want to remove muslims from their country, including Ceuta and Melilla. The people of those exclaves (not enclaves) are 60% or more Spanish, and those places have been parts of Spain before Morocco existed as a country
However, Israelis, such as Yair Netanyahu and Hananya Naftali have pointed out Madrid’s double standards in condemning Israel for its occupation of Judea and Samaria, while clinging on to Ceuta, Melilla and a few other small islands off the Moroccan coast. They point out that unlike Judea and Samaria, which are at the heart of Jewish history & culture, these places are not at the heart of Spanish history or culture. There is a much stronger case, therefore, for Madrid to let go of them before lecturing Israel on what it should or shouldn’t do
On X, there have been Spanish nationalists – God bless them – who have been defending the Spanish status of those places. However, they bizarrely then claim that Spain never had colonies, per se, and that everything from Mexico to Argentina (including parts of the southern US, like Florida) were an empire, and a part of Spain (sorta like Greenland being a part of Denmark). It’s a distinction w/o a difference, but harder to defend than, say, the Russian empire, which was at least contiguous w/ Muscovy. More importantly, unlike the people of Cueta, the people of Mexico to Argentina weren’t ethnic Spaniards at all: they were natives who were forcibly converted to Roman Catholicism and had Spanish installed as their language. So claiming that they had no colonies in face of those facts is really strange
While Israelis enjoy the rhetorical goals they score against the new soccer champions of the world, they’d still do well to support the Spanish nationalists (although obviously not Pedro Sanchez) so that Right Wing voices in Europe aren’t alienated by them

This is incorrect. The motive imputed to Israel was to get back at Spain for their hostility to Israel. This doesn’t make a lot of sense, though. Given the stance of Spain’s leader, no one ahead of time expected that this would be a public-relations disaster because it seems like the sort of thing he and his fellow leftists would welcome, so there is no reason for Israelis to think of doing this.
Also, the way that Israel is supposed to have done this was by using Israelis who spoke the Moroccan dialect of Arabic and who looked ethnically Moroccan. They were supposed to have gotten onto social media, urging Moroccans to do this. But of course those on social media could have been fellow Moroccans.
