I never thought that I would have anything good to say about Somali pirates.
From Hitler vs. Stalin to Alien vs. Predator, from Shiite vs. Sunni to Al Qaeda vs. ISIS, in Tolkien’s high-minded words, “Oft evil will shall evil mar”. And so, Somali pirates have been making a comeback and their target of choice turned out to be a sanctioned oil freighter.
A U.S.-sanctioned product tanker has been hijacked in the Gulf of Aden and redirected toward Somalia after six armed men boarded and seized control of the vessel, marking the second reported hijacking in the region this week.
The tanker was sanctioned by OFAC in December 2025 as part of a broader crackdown on Iran’s sanctions-evading shadow fleet. At the time, the vessel was identified as Seamull and managed by UAE-based Qatrat Alnada Almasi Ship Management. Treasury said Seamull had transported Iranian petroleum products, including naphtha and gasoil, on multiple occasions and had also called at Houthi-controlled ports in Yemen.
But the Iranians and Houthis were too busy shelling random ships to protect their own.
I never thought that I would have anything good to say about Somali pirates, but we’re all better off if they’re pirating Iran’s ghost fleet than pirating health care in Minnesota.

Yeah, the Somalis hijacked that ship, and nobody – not the US, not the Saudis, not the Yemenis, will bother confronting them about it. There’s just one problem: the islamic regime has squat: they are in no position to ransom that ship. As a result, the Somalis have squat as well. Unless they can make a buck selling that naphtha & gasoil in Somalia. Hey, maybe they can get Ilhan Omar to buy it from them, and then do whatever they like w/ the money 😈
