Sargodha Division stands as one of Punjab’s key centers of jihadist power, sectarian Islamic warfare, and the systematic targeting of innocent Christians. Terrorist’s organizations Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba maintain clear dominance across the division. Thousands of Muslims from the region remain linked to these organizations. Many Jihadis from the region have been killed in Indian-administered Kashmir by the professional Indian Army. while large numbers continue to fight alongside the Taliban against Western forces in Afghanistan. In the border district of Bhakkar, centers supplying Jihadis for the sectarian war and for Waziristan remain fully active. The power of Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba is so great that Pakistani military installations face the greatest threat from the fidayeen and suicide bombers of these Islamic groups. These very Jihadis, who were themselves created by the Pakistani army, occasionally carry out suicide attacks on their own military to force it to accept their demands. At times, one general uses these jihadis to carry out terrorism against another general. The reality is that there is no greater terrorist than the Pakistani army itself all these jihadist organizations are the army, and the army is all these jihadist organizations. A suicide bomber in Sargodha targeted a Pakistan Air Force bus.
Darul Uloom Miftah-ul-Uloom: A Hub of Jihadi Recruitment
Darul Uloom Miftah-ul-Uloom, located in Satellite Town, Sargodha, houses thousands of Jihadis, including large numbers of Pashtun trainees aged between 10 and 25. The terror Jamiah was founded in 1950 by Mufti Abdul Latif. Its role in fostering sectarian violence and jihad activity in Sargodha cannot be ignored. On 1 November 2007, a talib (student) of this madrasa, Terrorist Umar Farooq, was later sentenced to a record 870 years by an anti-terrorism court for his involvement in the suicide attack on a Pakistan Air Force bus. The madrasa’s administration has admitted expelling students involved in Islamic sectarian, jihad, and political activities, yet the terror institution continues to function as a major center of influence.
The 1 November 2007 Attack on the Pakistan Air Force Bus
On the morning of 1 November 2007, a Muslim suicide bomber on a motorcycle rammed into a Pakistan Air Force bus on Faisalabad Road near Sargodha. The bus was carrying PAF personnel from Mushaf Air Base to the Kirana Ammunition Depot. Seven PAF officers and three civilians were killed; 28 others were wounded. Investigation later revealed that local jihadist networks had provided the bomber with complete details of the bus movements. The attacker had stayed at a local madrasa linked to Jaish-e-Muhammad before carrying out the operation. Jaish-e-Muhammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba are regarded as the most powerful and influential jihadist organizations in Sargodha.
Riaz Basra: The Architect of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi from Sargodha
Pakistan’s most notorious sectarian killer, Muslim Terrorist Riaz Basra, hailed from the Jhawarian area of Sargodha. He was wanted in more than 300 cases of Shia killings. The Punjab government placed a bounty of five million rupees on his head; Sindh offered three million for his capture dead or alive.
In 1998, Basra disguised himself and entered an open court of then Ex-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, had photographs taken while receiving charity, and later sent the pictures with a warning that suicide attacks would follow if the government did not stop the killing of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi Jihadis in encounters. Nawaz Sharif subsequently shut down his open courts in Model Town, Lahore. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi announced a reward of 140 million rupees for anyone who killed Nawaz Sharif or Shahbaz Sharif.
Basra had been a central secretary of information for Terrorist outfit Sipah-e-Sahaba and a devoted follower of its founder, Terrorist Maulana Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. After Jhangvi’s murder in 1990, Basra and others formed a dedicated Muslim group of killers to target Shias and Iranian interests in Pakistan. In 1996 he formally launched Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, named after Haq Nawaz Jhangvi. Several splinter Jihadis groups Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Al-Haq Tigers, Tanzeem-ul-Haq, Al-Farooq, Al-Badr Foundation, and Allahu Akbar Group were absorbed into it under Basra’s leadership. Pakistani intelligence agencies maintain that Sipah-e-Sahaba’s leadership supported the creation of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi to provide a separate platform for Islamic armed operations.
Basra maintained close ties with the Taliban and served as an in-charge at the Khalid bin Walid Camp in Sarobi, Afghanistan. He returned repeatedly to Pakistan to direct killings. In Mominpura, Lahore, Basra and Akram Lahori gunned down more than 30 Shias. He was also responsible for the murder of the brother of former Interior Minister General Moinuddin Haider in Karachi and had earlier killed four innocent American citizens there. On 3 January 1999, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi planted a bomb under a bridge on Raiwind Road, Lahore, intended for Nawaz Sharif’s convoy; a policeman died while trying to defuse it.
On 8 May 2002, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi carried out a suicide car-bomb attack outside the Sheraton Hotel in Karachi, killing 11 French naval engineers working on the Agosta 90B submarine project, along with Pakistani bystanders. The Jihadis had mistaken the French for Americans. On 14 June 2002, the Islamic group killed 12 people in an attack near the Karachi port. On 17 March 2002, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi attacked the Protestant International Church in Islamabad’s diplomatic enclave with grenades during Sunday service, killing five people including Barbara Green, wife of US diplomat Milton Green, and their 17-year-old daughter Kristen Wormsley. In July 2002, the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi murdered Pakistan State Oil Managing Director Shaukat Raza Mirza in Karachi.
Riaz Basra was killed in a police encounter on 14 May 2002 near Vehari. From 1996 until his death he remained the most feared figure in Pakistan’s sectarian war, protected by links to Muslim politicians, Pakistani military officers, bureaucrats, and financiers. His death did not end the Jihadi’s network. Many of his successors continue to operate under the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi banner, often in coordination with the Taliban, carrying out suicide attacks across Punjab.
Bhakkar: A Sectarian and Jihadi Corridor
The district of Bhakkar within Sargodha Division has long been a hotspot of Islamic sectarian violence and a conduit for Jihadis moving toward Waziristan. Lashkar-e-Taiba and terrorist Jaish-e-Muhammad maintain strong centers there and facilitate the exchange of Jihadis with neighboring Dera Ismail Khan. Suicide attacks have repeatedly targeted the Shia Nawani political family. Sargodha Division Commissioner Syed Tajammul Abbas, a Shia, was assassinated by armed Sipah-e-Sahaba Terrorists.
Christian Persecution in Sargodha: A Continuous Pattern of Islamic Violence, Blasphemy Accusations, Rape, Abduction and Forced Conversion
Sargodha has emerged as a consistent theater of anti-Christian violence under the cover of Pakistan’s blasphemy laws and organized Islamic pressure.
Qazi Nigah Mustafa Chishti, affiliated with Markaz Ahl-e-Sunnat Jamia Masjid Hameed Shah in Company Bagh, Sargodha, is actively involved with his mujahideen in the abduction of Thousands of Christian girls and women, their rape, and forced conversion to Islam. He is also openly distributing forced conversion certificates to Christians across the region. Despite this, he holds official positions as a district member of the Peace Committee and divisional president of the Interfaith Harmony Committee. He maintains very strong ties with the Pakistani military and various jihadist organizations.
4 April 2010 Virk Colony, Chak 48-SB
A group of approximately ten Christian men was physically attacked and beaten after they protested the abuse of Christian women in the area. Instead of protecting the victims, police registered a false case against the Christian men, turning the protesters into the accused.
22 November 2010 Near Village 44-SB
Reverend Wilson Augustine was attacked while distributing Christian literature door-to-door. Six Muslim men beat him with clubs and belts, poured a flammable liquid on him, and set him on fire. He was left unconscious with severe burns. Local Christians later found him near a bus stop. Police showed little interest in pursuing the powerful local landowners whose sons were involved in the attack with jihadis backing.
2-9 December 2015 Chak 38 Janubi
Tahira Bibi (21–22) and Reema Bibi (18–20), daughters of Bashir Masih, were abducted by Muslim men including Muhammad Mustafa and Muhammad Kashif. The girls were raped, forcibly converted to Islam, and forced into marriage. They were confined in Islamabad. Tahira later escaped and described the sexual violence and torture she had suffered, while Reema remained trapped in the forced marriage. The abductors then filed counter-cases against Christian family members.
11 May 2023 Silanwali
Naeem Abbas was accused of blasphemy for allegedly insulting Muhammad’s companion Abu Bakr, becoming another target of Pakistan’s draconian blasphemy laws used against Christians.
28-30 June 2023 (FIR registered 1 July) Chak 49 Northern Shumaali
Haroon Shahzad was accused of blasphemy over a Facebook post containing a The Holy Bible verse. Christian households in the area were attacked. Although he was later acquitted in 2025, the false case created widespread fear among local Christians.
8 July 2023 Chak 98 area
Zaki Masih (also known as Zaki Waris) was accused of false blasphemy over an alleged Facebook post, continuing the wave of social-media-based accusations against Christians in Sargodha.
July August 2023 Chak 36, Chak 37 and Maryam Town
Several Christian men, including Zimran George, Kamran George and others, were arrested in connection with alleged Quran desecration cases.
27 August 2023 Satellite Town, Sargodha
Seventeen-year-old Christian boy Akash Karamat was arrested by Satellite Town Police. An FIR was registered under multiple blasphemy sections, including provisions that carry the death penalty or life imprisonment. He was accused of writing derogatory remarks about Islamic figures on paper. The case formed part of a wider wave of blasphemy accusations targeting Christians in the district that year. Akash remained in jail for more than 17 months before eventually securing bail.
25 May 2024 Mujahid Colony (Gillwala), Sargodha city
Seventy-four-year-old Christian Lazarus (Nazir) Masih was set upon by a large mob in a predominantly Christian area after being accused of burning pages of the Quran. Hundreds of Muslims, including Terrorist linked to Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), participated in the brutal assault. Masih was beaten with stones, bricks and steel rods. His house and shoe factory were looted and set on fire. He sustained severe head injuries and died of those injuries on 2–3 June 2024. Until today, all his Muslim killers are still roaming freely. No one has ever been sentenced even for a single minute, while his children and grandchildren continue to live in hiding from Muslims. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom strongly condemned the attack.
July 2025 Sultan Town, Sargodha
In July 2025, 14-year-old Christian boy Shamraiz Masih, son of widow Rehana Imran, was abducted and forcibly converted to Islam. Working at a motorcycle shop owned by Muslim Rana Munir, he left for the market on 21 July and never returned. His employer lured him with money, took him to Madina Ghausia Madrassa, and obtained a conversion certificate renaming him Muhammad Umar. Police showed little interest. The Lahore High Court denied custody to his mother and handed the minor to a Muslim relative. Allegations of sexual abuse also emerged.
3-4 March 2026 Farm in Chak 36 South area
Marqas Masih, a Christian bonded farm labourer, was found dead hanging from a girder on a farm owned by Muhammad Mohsin and Muhammad Basharat. The landlords claimed it was suicide, but the body showed clear signs of torture, including bruises and peeled skin. The family and local Christian community protested, alleging that he had been tortured to death and the killing staged as suicide. A murder case was registered only after public pressure.
In Sargodha, thousands of cases of abduction, rape, forced conversion to Islam, and the marriage of Christian girls to elderly Muslim men who then keep them as sex slaves go unreported. The victims’ families remain silent out of terror of being killed by Jihadis. These incidents, spanning physical attacks, false blasphemy cases, abductions, rape, forced conversion, mob violence and murder, form an unbroken pattern of systematic targeting of Christians in Sargodha, carried out with near-total impunity.
Conclusion: An Unbroken System of Islamic Impunity
From the founding of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi by terrorist Riaz Basra of Sargodha, through the suicide attacks on military targets, the church massacres, the slaughter of French engineers, the blasphemy-driven Muslim mob assaults, and the ongoing abduction and forced conversion of Christian children, the pattern remains unbroken and unrelenting. Sargodha Division continues to serve as one of Pakistan’s primary incubators of jihadist manpower, sectarian killers, and systematic anti-Christian violence. Until the Pakistani military’s support, the jihadist networks, the terror madrasas, the safe houses, the culture of political and official complicity, and the weaponization of blasphemy laws are completely dismantled, the bloodshed and the terrorization of Christians and Shias will continue without interruption or accountability.

Last year, when Indian bombs hit the place during their brief war, some Pakis were alarmed that their nukes could be damaged and that there could be radiation leaks.
