A seemingly red-faced Mayor Zohran Mamdani blamed a “miscommunication” Tuesday after an awkward public clash between City Hall and NYPD officials over whether the department would provide security for his wife Rama Duwaji’s upcoming Middle East trip.
The high-profile back-and-forth appeared to end when Hizzoner asserted that Duwaji would not receive a taxpayer-funded police escort on her jaunt to Syria and Lebanon next month — despite his own senior spokesperson claiming she would the day prior.
“There was a miscommunication. She has not yet taken that trip and when she takes that trip it will be without any NYPD detail,” Mamdani told PIX11, when asked about The Post’s Monday report=
A source familiar with the security detail said the first lady, whom the mayor has described as a “private person,” requested the escort, and Mamdani’s office had confirmed she would be accompanied by city cops.
“Upon the strong recommendation of the NYPD, the first lady’s security detail will be joining her when she travels to visit family in Syria and Lebanon,” Mamdani’s spokeswoman Dora Pekec said….
This was a lie. There was no “strong recommendation of the NYPD” that Duwaji be accompanied on her travel to visit family by members of her security detail. Mamdani’s office simply made that up.
When asked about the disparity, Pekec directed The Post toward Mamdani’s remarks attributing the matter to a “miscommunication” to PIX11 during an event later Tuesday that was closed to other press.
The mayor’s office offered no further comment on the Sept. 20 trip’s details or whether the purpose was solely to visit family.
The source with knowledge of the trip told The Post, “It’s not official business. It’s not doing anything for the city.”
Both countries [Duwaji was visiting Syria and Lebanon] are on the US State Department’s “Do Not Travel” list due to security concerns.
There was no “miscommunication” with the NYPD. Mamdani never bothered to consult with them about providing his wife with a security detail in the Middle East. He simply assumed, arrogantly, that what his wife wanted would of course be granted by a subservient police force. The NYPD begged to differ, reminding Mamdani that security details are supplied only for officials — Duwaji is not an official — traveling on official business, and visiting relatives is not official business. The presumption and arrogance of Mamdani and his wife are yet again exposed.
The mayor and his wife, with their hypertrophied sense of entitlement, have now come a cropper with the NYPD denying her outrageous request for a security detail to accompany her on what is only a private visit to relatives in Syria and Lebanon. And the mayor, whose office assumed that such a request of course would be granted, now has egg on his face. Why does this contretemps put me in mind of Marie Antoinette?

For a Mayor who wants to severely cut the NYPD if not disband it entirely, he tales a very strange desire to have them provide security for his wife on a completely personal family visit to two foreign countries on the US State Dept’ list of Not recommending travel to those places. Attributing the announcement that included the NYPD in that trip as a “misunderstanding” is weak as there is no right to use the NYPD for such a trip by the Mayor. under any circumstance.
