I happen to be reading “Freedom at Midnight”, about the time of India’s independence. The great and good British Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten, was trying desperately to persuade all the parties to agree to a united India. Historically, I think it’s that Catholics have tended to be pretty antisemitic: more than Protestants, but as antisemitic as Eastern Orthodox entities. So you had Ferdinand & Isabella in Spain, heroes that they were, expel not only muslims but also the Jews, and you had King Edward I of England too expel the Jews. The most tolerance for Jews in Europe had been in Protestant countries like Holland. No offense to Catholics here, but the record is pretty much there of Catholics historically having a pretty antisemtic record
