France: Motive of Muslim Who Attacked Police While Screaming ‘Allahu Akbar’ ‘Remains Unclear’

In Toulouse, a knife-wielding Muslim attacked two police officers who were sitting in their patrol car, and managed to wound both of them. One of the cuts came close to severing the victim’s carotid artery. Two municipal police officers were injured in a knife attack late Monday afternoon on Rue d’Austerlitz, in the heart of Toulouse (Haute-Garonne). Their attacker—who reportedly made “terrorist-related remarks,” according to the city’s mayor—was arrested at the scene and taken to the hospital. The Toulouse public prosecutor’s office has taken charge of the case.

In a message posted on X shortly after the incident, Toulouse Mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc confirmed the attack. “This evening, two municipal police officers were attacked with a bladed weapon while on duty on Rue d’Austerlitz, ensuring the safety of Toulouse residents,” he wrote, adding: “Terrorist-related remarks were also reported.” The mayor stated that both officers were being treated at the Rangueil University Hospital and that the perpetrator had been “quickly apprehended.”

It was shortly before 6:00 PM when municipal police officers were patrolling the Wilson district. According to Deputy Mayor for Security Emilion Esnault, as cited by *La Dépêche*, an individual lunged at their vehicle “while making wild gestures.” One of the officers, seated on the passenger side, then lowered his window. That was when the man struck toward the vehicle’s interior with an object resembling an oyster knife.

Three knives in his possession
The two municipal police officers exited the vehicle to try to subdue their attacker. “The arrest was extremely difficult. They managed to seize his knife, but he had two others on him,” recounted the deputy in charge of security. According to his information, the individual shouted “Allahu Akbar” several times. “My feeling is that he was determined to murder our officers,” the official added. The suspect was finally subdued using pepper spray.

The outcome could have been far worse. While the two officers sustained only cuts to their arms, “the tip of the attacker’s knife struck one of them in the neck, right next to the carotid artery, and his colleague’s bulletproof vest bears the mark of a large gash along the flank,” detailed Emilion Esnault. The attacker, who was injured during the arrest, was also taken to the hospital. His motives remain to be determined.

According to the police, the would-be cop-killer’s motives “remain unclear.” I beg to differ. After all, what could the motive possibly be for someone who as he attacks with a knife shouts “Allahu akbar”?
