Investigators say Hassan Haji, 24, of Winooski, surrendered to police on Tuesday morning. He faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 24-year-old Deng Dau.
Police say surveillance video from the parking lot behind the courthouse on Main Street shows a fight between Dau and 22-year-old Shuaib Mohamud, when police say Haji stepped in and stabbed Deng.
Mohamud and Haji are both proper Islamic names. Dau, the victim, was probably Sudanese and it’s unclear if he was Muslim.
But of course we can’t talk any of that so the leftist mayor is resisting any reforms to the pro-crime policies and insists on gun control.
Democrats on the Burlington City Council pushed through a resolution earlier this month that targets criminal behavior downtown, including public drug use and illegal camping.
Burlington Mayor Emma Mulvaney-Stanak, a Progressive, condemned the resolution and accused councilors of refusing to collaborate with her office before putting it forward.
In a press release on Monday morning, Mulvaney-Stanak called the weekend incidents “deeply upsetting” but sought to dispel any notion that they reflect a broader deterioration of safety in the city.
“I know these incidents can leave us feeling worried, angry, and unsettled — particularly at a time when our community is engaged in difficult and fraught conversations about safety,” Mulvaney-Stanak wrote. “This is a time to unify around what we know makes communities safer — violence prevention work, including with youth, strengthening gun laws, and making sure members of our community’s basic needs are met.”
What we know makes communities safer, pandering to criminals, banning people from defending themselves and the welfare state. Also mass migration from some of the most violent places on the planet.

Why should law abiding be armed against possible jihad attacks by “illegal campers ” or feral Moslem youths? Vermont is near a very low monitored Canadian border where drug smuggling ,human trafficking and possible terrorist just have to walk threw mostly unguarded woods to these progressive run towns . I am sure if ICE wanted to arrest or detain or deport these “illegal campers ” this mayor would not have the local cops or law enforcement work with them with the threat of firing them.

Believe it or not, liberal Vermont has some of the laxist gun laws in the country, In Vermont as of 2026, no permit is required to purchase a firearm, and permitless (constitutional) concealed carry is allowed. A 1-day waiting period applies to purchases. Vermont has a red flag (ERPO) law. Magazines are capped at 15 rounds. And guess what? “Gun violence” (against another) is among the lowest in the country, although suicide by firearm among white males seems to be a problem. I guess the guns sold in Vermont are well behaved and taught when they are purchased to behave themselves.
In New York City, where you need a firearm the most, it is the most difficult to get. A full carry permit is almost impossible to get. Those who [illegally] possess a pistol and justifiably use it to defend themselves are met with full prosecution by the District Attorney. They bully the defendant to take a plea deal, which he usually does, because he cannot afford to defend himself through the appeals to exercise his Constitutional right to carry. Chicago is another place with strict gun laws. But why then does it have the highest crime rate from illegal firearm use?
