Newly released CCTV footage shows how Mohammad Bashir and Heaton Park synagogue attacker Jihad Al-Shamie began plotting a terror attack on the UKDA base in Wiltshire.
“This time next year, we’re going green bird,” Mohammad Bashir told his associate.
The remark, captured via CCTV audio inside a Manchester mosque, would later become one of the most chilling pieces of evidence in a counter-terrorism investigation that uncovered plans for an attack on a military site and ultimately led to Bashir being jailed for life.
On Thursday, July 23, Bashir, 31, of Shaftesbury Road, Cheetham Hill, was sentenced to life imprisonment at Manchester Crown Court after admitting preparation of terrorist acts.
He will serve a minimum term of 17 years, reduced to 16 years and 135 days to account for time already served.
The case emerged from the enormous investigation launched after Jihad Al-Shamie carried out the fatal attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in October 2025.
While Bashir plotted alongside Al-Shamie in the weeks beforehand, counter-terrorism detectives have repeatedly stressed that they found no evidence that Bashir had prior knowledge of Al-Shamie’s plans for the synagogue attack.
Instead, the evidence showed the pair had been jointly researching and preparing for a separate attack targeting the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Wiltshire.
The investigation revealed how Bashir and Al-Shamie met at the Al Sunnah Mosque in Cheetham Hill in 2023 and gradually formed a close friendship.
Their extremist views became increasingly evident through online messages, social media activity, internet searches and conversations captured on mosque CCTV systems.
Investigators said the pair frequently met in secluded areas of the mosque where they believed they could not be seen or overheard.
However, cameras were recording both video and audio.
The footage would become some of the most compelling evidence in the case.
During one conversation, the court heard Al-Shamie say: “I wish we had a weapon.
“We need to get one.
“Crossbow.
“Is there a way for us to go in?”
Later in the exchange, Bashir responded: “You got me really excited.”
Al-Shamie then made clear the pair were discussing an attack they expected would end in their deaths.
“Once we go there, we’re not coming back.
“Once we go to the mission,” he said.
“Prepare to say bye to loved ones, any last debts we could pay off or any fines.”
In another recording, Bashir was heard telling Al-Shamie: “This time next year, we’re going green bird.”
Counter-terrorism officers told the court that the phrase is associated with martyrdom, with the souls of martyrs said to be “placed into green birds”….
