This is yet more indication that it was useless and self-defeating ever to try to negotiate with the Islamic Republic of Iran. These are less spontaneous demonstrations of grief and rage than they are orchestrated displays from a totalitarian regime to demonstrate its ongoing defiance. No agreement with such a regime could ever have been favorable to the U.S.

At the funeral of Ira’’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, mourners hung U.S. President Donald Trump in effigy from a makeshift gallows draped with the flag of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Footage of the display was posted by Iran’s official Tasnim News Agency on July 6, 2026.
According to a video posted by the Instagram account of the Iran Student Correspondents Association (ISCA News), mourners also hurled objects that appeared to be plastic water bottles at a billboard bearing President Trump’s image. One mourner climbed onto the bridge where the billboard was mounted and tore Trump’s face from the banner.

Latest on the Khamenei funeral saga: yesterday, in Mashhad, there was a terrorist attack by the Mojahedeen e-Khalq (MeK) on the IRGC/Basij, at or after Khamenei’s funeral. Several IRGC members were killed
MeK is recognized as an islamo-Marxist cult by most Iranians, some of who think that’s it’s actually worse than the islamic regime. But if they are the only ones on the ground fighting the IRGC/Basij, they’re the ones who’ll end up winning the reins of power in Iran – not Pahlavi. Reza Pahlavi seems to think that a Gandhian approach of a bloodless revolution is the path in Iran, but while he has that luxury of wishing that while sitting in Maryland or doing tours of Europe, if he doesn’t signal to Iranians to do an uprising, the MeK are the ones who will end up toppling the IRGC and seizing power in Iran. I have no idea what their relations w/ Israel will be, since Israeli agents have been talking to them, but the result will not be good for either Iran nor the region.
