This is an example of the argument from authority, which is the weakest of all arguments. As Jonah Platt explains, all of the authorities Hasan invokes are taking Hamas’ word about casualties, and Hamas is simply not trustworthy. Meanwhile, true to form and in line with his propaganda agenda, Hasan ignores voices on the other side and tries to give the impression that the denial that Israel is committing genocide is just a claim of Benjamin Netanyahu and a handful of others.

I have never heard one of you denouncing the atrocities being inflicted on African Christians. Never heard one of you call attention to it nor denounced it, not one of you, ever. The UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, adopted in 1948, defines genocide as acts committed with the intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group.
To prove the charge of genocide, the accusers would have to prove Israel is:
(a) Killing members of the group; – Palestinians are being killed in Gaza. But not deliberately because they are Palestinians or even Muslims. They are dying because Hamas (and other similar terrorist groups) are using civilian Palestinians to hide behind.
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; – the ongoing operations in Gaza probably are causing incidental bodily or mental harm to Palestinians. This could be resolved if Hamas surrendered and disarmed.
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; – the issue is whether Israel is deliberately inflicting on the Palestinians in Gaza conditions of life designed to bring about physical destruction, or whether this is happening incidentally in Israel’s efforts to target Hamas.
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; – once again this comes down to whether the impact on births in Gaza is deliberate or incidental.
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. – there seems to be no evidence of this.
The question is whether Israel is targeting Hamas (and other similar groups like the Palestinian Islamic Jihad), or whether Israel is deliberately targeting Palestinians regardless of any affiliation to Hamas.
Despite what the UN and ICC might claim, the claim that Israel is committing genocide is far from proven.
The issue also highlights that the UN definition for genocide is vague and unusable.
