Zohran Mamdani is full of hatred for the state of Israel. He has endorsed the BDS movement, that attempts through economic boycotts, divestment from Israeli companies, and sanctions on Israeli companies, to bring down the state. He endorses the slogan “from the river to the sea/Palestine shall be free,” which is a call for the disappearance of Israel, the expulsion of all of its Jewish citizens, and its replacement with a “state of Palestine.” He refuses to condemn the chant “globalize the Intifada,” which is a call for murdering Jews not just in Israel, but everywhere. Since becoming mayor, he has become even more virulent in expressing his hatred for Israel. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he could not endorse states that privilege one religion over another, including Israel and Saudi Arabia, during a one-on-one interview with ABC’s Jonathan Karl on Sunday.
“Democratic Socialists of America now says they no longer favor a two-state solution. Is that the way you see it as well?” Karl asked in the interview, which came days after Mamdani’s endorsed Democratic socialist candidates for Congress swept their New York Democratic primaries.
Among them, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier campaigned on platforms that included opposition to US military aid to Israel and support for Palestinian rights.
Mamdani replied to Karl: “The way I see it is equal rights for all people. And I think that that’s the truth for Israel. It’s the truth for any country in the world.”
When pressed by Karl that Israel is in fact a Jewish state and “that’s in the charter, that’s the way it is now,” Mamdani said he has consistently stated he supports “the state of Israel as a state with equal rights.”
However, he added, “I believe that any state that privileges one religion over the other is one that I can’t tell you I support, whether it be Israel or Saudi Arabia or anywhere else.”…
Mamdani has things wrong. In Israel there is no state religion. It is too bad that his interviewer, Jonathan Karl, did not bring Mamdani’s attention, and that of the public watching the interview, to that fact. There is, instead, full freedom for people of every religion, and none, to worship, or fail to, as they see fit. In Israel, Muslims have full civil, political, and economic rights, equal to those of Israeli Jews. There is only one difference in the treatment of Jews and Arabs, not in their rights but in their duties: Jews must, while Arabs may, serve in the military.
Mamdani likens Israel to Saudi Arabia, but there is no similarity between the two. Saudi Arabia is a theocratic state. Not only is Islam the state religion, but it is the only religion that Saudi citizens are permitted to have. Neither Christians nor Jews, even if foreigners, can openly worship in Saudi Arabia. There are no churches or synagogues anywhere in Saudi Arabia. Expats can quietly, and behind closed doors, engage in Christian worship, but even there, the religious police have been known to break up such gatherings. In one example of this, the Saudi religious police arrested some British nurses who, at Christmas, and behind the closed doors of their apartment, were softly singing carols. Strictly forbidden. The country’s Islamic faith is written on its flag, which contains the Shahada, the Profession of Faith and the opening verse of the Qur’an.
While there are no churches or synagogues in Saudi Arabia, there are over 400 mosques and 380 churches in Israel.
Nor is Saudi Arabia the only Muslim state to “privilege” Islam over all other religions. In fact, of the 22 members of the Arab League, all but one — Lebanon — recognize Islam as the state religion. And more than 52 the 57 members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation also have Islam as the state religion. Jonathan Karl might have asked Mamdani his opinion of that. Since he says he cannot endorse any country that has a “state religion,” will he now refuse to endorse more than 50 states where Islam is the state religion, including 21 of the 22 Arab states? I think we know the answer to that.
Israel is the only state in North Africa and the Middle East that provides “equal rights” for all of its citizens. If Mamdani has any evidence that this is not true, he should be asked to provide it.

Related to this subject is one concept that many Americans just don’t understand that term used, which is “political Islam.” That term is nonsensical and redundant as well as unknown in the Islamic world.
First, that term being nonsensical one devout Muslim who, truly, proclaimed “Islam is Islam.”
Second. as for that term being redundant, has been well explained by none other Ayatollah Khomeini who declared” All Islam is politics.” [1]
