Jewish lawyers constitute 50% of the total number of lawyers in New York City. Yet Mayor Zohran Mamdani has made sure that the city’s 18-member judicial advisory committee, that recommends candidates to serve as judges on New York City courts, contains not a single Jew. And that, presumably, will lead to fewer Jews being considered for judgeships. Mamdani is trying to push Jews in the city to the side, marginalizing them wherever possible, limiting their representation at every level of government, and especially, in those lifetime appointments to judgeships. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing criticism from prominent Jewish legal organizations after appointing an 18-member judicial advisory committee without a single Jewish member, an omission critics say reflects a broader pattern of marginalizing the city’s Jewish community.
The Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary screens and recommends candidates for appointment to New York City courts. Jewish attorneys served on the panel under previous administrations, but none were included in Mamdani’s newly constituted committee.
A coalition of Jewish legal organizations condemned the appointments, arguing that the omission excludes one of New York’s largest religious and ethnic communities from an influential body responsible for shaping the city’s judiciary.
“Your recent announcement of appointees to the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary has left us deeply disappointed,” the groups wrote. “Not a single Jewish attorney, former judge, or legal professional was appointed to a committee your administration described as one that would be ‘truly reflective of New York City.’”
Jews make up 10% of the city’s population, but 50% of the city’s lawyers. Yet what Mamdani describes as a judicial appointments committee that is “truly reflective of New York City” contains not a single Jew.
City Hall has not suggested that Jewish candidates were excluded because of their religion. The administration has defended the appointments by saying the committee was assembled to represent a broad range of legal backgrounds and perspectives while making the judicial-selection process more transparent.
How can Mayor Mamdani’s administration claim that his judicial appointments committee represents “a broad range of legal backgrounds and perspectives” when not a single Jew is on that committee? How stupid does he think we are?
With each new act to marginalize Jews in New York City, Mamdani earns greater disapproval, and not only among Jews. As of June, 72% of Jewish New Yorkers disapprove of him. With this latest contretemps over his deliberately Judenrein judicial appointments committee, that number has surely gone up even more. In the election one-third of Jews voted for Mamdani; now roughly one-quarter would do so if the election were held today, and that percentage has steadily declined since January 2026. And only 40% of New Yorkers still approve of Mamdani, who has yet to deliver on a single one of his promises — free childcare for all, free bus service, a network of non-profit grocery stores. Meanwhile, well-off New Yorkers have been leaving the city because of Mamdani’s higher taxes, causing billions of dollars in lost tax revenues.
Mamdani turns out to be exactly as his enemies feared: a man with an anti-Israel animus so strong that it has metamorphosed into outright antisemitism. He is out to curb Jewish power in the city, in any way he can. Leaving Jews out of the judicial appointments committee, despite the fact that 50% of the city’s lawyers are Jews, is one of those ways. Mamdani has only been in office for seven months; there is going to be much more of this.

For some reason, Jews are in denial about this. It seems that they were treated well by Muslims in medieval Spain, so what happened a thousand years ago is more important than what has happened in the last eighty years.
I know a Jewish woman who was so worried about Trump and the rise of antisemitism here in America that she moved away. And where did she go? To Israel? No. To England. Just a little bit of research on her part would have told her that there are Jews who have left England due to the rise of antisemitism there, but she is a leftist, and no doubt her sources of information did not keep her informed.
By the way, she has a Ph.D. and has recently retired from academia, so she had the intelligence to be well-informed. She just lacked the desire.
