It looks as if here yet again, as we have seen in Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Somalia and elsewhere, that the jihad forces are better equipped, better trained, and better funded than the national military forces. If an Islamic state is established in Mali, it could join forces with those who are trying to establish one in Nigeria.

The attacks by jihadists and their separatist Tuareg allies were reported in Gao, Anefis, Aguelhok and Sevare, as well as a prison in Kenieroba. The fighting, which started around 4am (04:00 GMT), came more than two months after the same groups staged attacks against the junta in which the country’s defence minister was killed….
A regional elected official said that rebels now controlled the town of Anefis, with Russians “entrenched in camp there” and “many” Malian military personnel taken prisoner.
Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, a spokesman for ethnic Tuareg separatist movement the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), had told AFP earlier in the day that “several positions” had fallen at Anefis, though he had added that fighting was still “underway” inside the city….
Anefis and Aguelhok are the last remaining locations where Mali’s army maintains a presence in the Kidal region following the massive attacks of April 25 and 26.
The strategic northern Malian city of Kidal fell under the control of FLA fighters during the late-April offensives….
The death toll could be severely understated, however, given that the military does not generally release information on losses….
The major Kenieroba prison complex, where jihadists among others are held and located a few dozen kilometres from the capital Bamako, was also under attack….

I wonder what the Russians find so valuable in Mali, of all places: it’s not like it’s still overflowing w/ gold and that Mansa Musa still runs the place. Particularly when Russia is running out of cannon fodder in Ukraine and can’t defend Crimea, St Petersburg or even Moscow refineries

Too bad not only Mali but virtually all of Africa isn’t overwhelmingly Christian, specifically all those in Mali and the entire continent of Africa, respecting every Muslim population in the over 50 African countries that exist, not being Muslim but Christian. Yes, much travail and many challenges would still exist but if all the Muslim population of Africa were Christian instead this would function, enormously, as a step in the right direction.
Islam is a major impediment to human advancement. Christianity at worst is a neutral here, actually a positive by most measures. Look at the Judeo-Christian world compared to the Islamic world over the past half millennium for confirmation of this thesis.

Even if African countries – from Egypt to Gambia to South Africa – kept their own original native faiths (like Pasadjet in Egypt – the faith of the ancient Egyptians) – that would have been an improvement
