Maher Younes was the cold-blooded murderer of an Israeli soldier, Avraham Bromberg, in 1980. He was then released, after serving 40 years in prison, in 2023. And then this murderer became a revered figure of the Palestinian “resistance,” with a hall named after him having just been opened. Israeli Arab terrorist Maher Yunes [sic] and his cousin Karim Younes kidnapped Israeli soldier Avraham Bromberg while he was on leave in 1980, cold-bloodedly shot him in the head, and left him for dead on the side of the road. Both terrorist murderers were released in 2023 after serving 40 years in prison. Maher died two days ago and has been lionized since then throughout the Palestinian Authority and Fatah. Senior PA and Fatah officials have presented the murderer as a “great national leader,” a “symbol,” a “fighter,” and a model for future Palestinian generations while also portraying him as a victim of Israel.

Fatah Central Committee member Abbas Zaki likewise glorified Younes, calling him “the late great” and “an exemplary figure of extraordinary struggle in modern Palestinian revolutionary history,” saying he had provided “an eternal model of sacrifice and giving.”

Palestinian National Council Chairman Rawhi Fattouh called Younes “the fighter, leader, rebel, and released prisoner” and said his “sacrifice will remain a source of inspiration for Palestinian generations.”

Younes was one of the prominent leaders of the prisoners’ movement and of the Fatah fighters, and he passed away after a national path full of struggle and sacrifice, a few years after his release and after serving 40 years in the prisons of the Israeli occupation… While mourning the great national leader, the Palestinian National Council president emphasizes that his sacrifice will remain a source of inspiration for Palestinian generations and that his way of struggle will endure.”

The official PA daily also published emotional praise of Younes. In an article headlined “40 years waiting for life,” Al-Hayat Al-Jadida portrayed his prison sentence not as punishment for murder, but as stolen life. The paper wrote that Younes had only truly lived the four years after his release, while the previous 40 years were “suspended in a prison cell.”…
In another report, the official PA daily quoted Fatah’s eulogy, which called Younes a “national leader” and “a historical model of struggle” who would continue to inspire Palestinian generations. Fatah said his death was “a great loss to the Palestinian national movement and the prisoners’ movement.”
Keep reminding yourself that Younes was a stone-cold murderer. That is his heroic deed. That is why the Palestinian national movement honors him. It is the same kind of ghastly honoring of murderers and terrorists that Palestinians have lavished on Leila Khaled, the PFLP member involved in two airplane hijackings, and on Ahlam al-Tamimi, who masterminded the bombing of the Sbarro Pizzeria, in which 16 Israelis, seven of them children, were killed, and 130 more were wounded, in 2001. She chose that site because, she said, she knew there would be lots of Israeli mothers with their children there. She later described the joy she felt when she learned of how many victims there had been.
From every part of Palestinian society, the high praise for Maher Younes keeps pouring in. From senior PA officials, Palestinian print and television journalists, and the Prisoners’ Clubs, Younes is being hailed as a nonpareil hero who gave “forty years of his life” for the sacred cause of “Palestine.”
Those of you who have kept your moral compass need to remind yourselves, and others, that Maher Younes, now being lionized by Palestinians as a “hero” for having spent forty years behind bars, was a stone-cold murderer. But don’t try to convince the Palestinians of that. They are stuck in a moral morass of their own making. And nothing and nobody will persuade them to come unstuck.
