Being both small in size, devoid of natural resources, and permanently embattled on many fronts by enemies, that are either larger, like Iran, or richer, like Saudi Arabia, as a result of oil revenues, Israel’s main natural resource is not oil or gas, but the spectacular brains of its scientists. Now those scientists are enrolled in an effort to develop space lasers capable of destroying the enemy’s satellites far above the earth’s surface. Defense Minister Israel Katz announced last month that the effort is underway, and he says that Israel will emerge as the first state with such a weapon. Israel is developing space lasers to carry out attacks above the Earth, Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday.
“One of the central goals that the prime minister and I set is that we are recruiting the best minds,” he said in a briefing with military reporters. “As of today, no country has the ability to mount attacks in space. We must be the leading country in the world with this capability.”
“If we achieve this, it will ensure the advantage of deterrence, of the ability to attack, destroy, and all of the other matters, versus our enemies with large resources,” he added.
Last Thursday, Katz said Israel was committed to becoming the leading player with capabilities to attack from space. But his latest statement was the first time he had specifically mentioned space lasers.
Israel is already a leading country in this field, having developed Iron Beam as a land-based space laser. During a recent visit to Elbit, The Jerusalem Post both witnessed and was informed about a project to enable fighter jets to fire lasers in the future.
During the briefing, Katz seemed to be referring to Iran. Notably, during the war with Iran this year, Israel struck multiple Iranian facilities related to the space war, including those that were developing capabilities to attack satellites in space.
What remains unclear is whether Katz seeks to deter Russia and China from assisting Iran in the space race and other matters.
But of course he does. He would be foolish, however, to discuss publicly how, with what carrots or sticks, Israel could deter either Russia or China from helping Iran develop space laser weapons. He might, for example, try to enroll the Arab countries of the Gulf, especially Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in an effort to discourage Chinese help to Iran’s laser weapon project. The Saudis could threaten to withhold hundreds of billions of dollars in building contracts for their huge new cities, such as Mohammad bin Salman’s NEOM project, that will cost a minimum of $500 billion to build.
Israeli weapons scientists keep on delivering new, more powerful, defense weapons, such as the Iron Dome and the first laser-based anti-missile system, Iron Beam, as well as significant improvements they have made to American fighter jets, F-16s and F-35s, that are now in Israel’s armory. By equipping U.S.-supplied hardware with custom avionics, advanced sensors, and indigenous munitions, Israel transforms these planes assets into specialized, highly customized combat assets. And the Americans have now copied on their own planes some of the changes the Israelis have made to their F-16s and F-35s.
Now Katz has made clear that Israel will be the first to manufacture a laser-based weapon for use in space. Given Israel’s record in laser-based weapons, is there any reason to disbelieve his prediction?

Building space-based laser weapons (remember Reagan’s Star Wars?) is an order of magnitude harder than creating the Iron Beam. It is not easy-peasy, but rather the technology to do so must be created first. The US poured a lot of money into Star Wars projects, but those were discontinued when the Soviet Union collapsed without any return technologically on the project.
Making space to space weapons is not as difficult as making space to earth weapons. But, I would not expect a working prototype for at least another 10 years. The choke point that Isreal will face is funding. A project of this magnitude is sure to go into cost overruns and cost overruns attract lots of criticism.

These are just hallucinations since such a weapon is impossible to build.
One of the challenges is energy supply and the only realistic solution to this challenge is a nuclear reactor. Solar energy will not suffice in any realistic scenario.
The second challenge is cooling the laser. There is no realistical solution for this problem either.

I am very proud of Israel’s and my own technological achievements and in the context of the current war, I keep thinking about the invention and development of new technological solutions to security problems, suggesting them to the relevant people whenever I know who they are and how to reach them.

The funding comes when everyone wants a piece of the action. If Israel is advertising, this is probably already a reality. Meetings between Netanyahu and Hegseth are not an accident. These weapons will be a boon to the US assault on Iran.
There’s a possibility we are waiting on their completion while arming various internal groups.
