Why Trump Demanded That Netanyahu Stop IDF Attack on Hezbollah Sites in Beirut

The Islamic Republic of Iran said it would stop its negotiations with the U.S. unless Israel stopped fighting Hezbollah in Lebanon. U.S. President Donald Trump, who claims he has all the time in the world to negotiate, is in fact desperate to reach an agreement with Iran that will lead to a resumption of ship traffic through the strait of Hormuz, which the President hopes will lead to a steep drop in the price of oil, and hence of gasoline at the pump, just in time to affect the midterm elections. So Trump, eager to win Tehran’s favor by saving its proxy Hezbollah from the IDF — that has just launched its deepest assault into Lebanon in the last 25 years — has just given his marching, or rather unmarching orders, to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, demanding that he call off the IDF’s assault on Beirut. US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on Monday about the potential for a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.After the call, Trump announced that Israel had agreed that “there will be no Troops going to Beirut, and any Troops that are on their way, have already been turned back.”In exchange, he said, Hezbollah had agreed that all shooting will stop – “That Israel will not attack them, and they will not attack Israel.”

That is a bit misleading. Israel agreed only to stop its attack on Beirut, but promised nothing about the rest of Lebanon. Furthermore, he made clear that if Hezbollah did not stop, or stopped only to again resume, its attacks on Israel, the IDF would again attack Hezbollah targets in Beirut.

Later, Netanyahu announced that he had told Trump that “if Hezbollah doesn’t stop attacking our towns and citizens – Israel will attack terror targets in Beirut.”

He also said that the IDF would continue to operate as planned in southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese Embassy in Washington had earlier confirmed that Hezbollah had accepted the US proposal, saying that the ceasefire framework would be expanded to encompass “all Lebanese territories.”tories.”

But as of now, that “ceasefire framework only includes Beirut. The IDF will continue to target “all Lebanese territories” except Beirut.

The embassy’s statement also claimed that Trump had told Lebanon’s Ambassador to the United States that Netanyahu had also agreed to the arrangement.

I don’t know if Trump really said this to the Lebanese ambassador, but I am certain of one thing: Netanyahu would never agree to stopping IDF attacks on Beirut no matter what. He made clear that any Hezbollah attack, from anywhere, would trigger a resumption of IDF attacks on Beirut. Netanyahu would never agree to a full ceasefire in Lebanon. That would be a lifesaver for Hezbollah, just as it is finally on the verge of dismantlement under the punishing bombs of the IDF.

Trump is behaving with Netanyahu like a monarch grandly giving orders to an underling. In telling Netanyahu he “must not strike Beirut,” he is protecting the terror group Hezbollah, that previous American administrations have recognized as such. The Americans should not be protecting Hezbollah; it was Hezbollah that murdered 241 Marines in their Beirut barracks in 1982, and has murdered more American citizens in Israel ever since..

The headquarters of Hezbollah are in Dahiyeh, a suburb in southern Beirut, which Israel has repeatedly attacked. Now, if Trump’s order to Netanyahu is obeyed, that will be throwing a lifeline to Hezbollah, that will simply move many of its members into Beirut where, thanks to Trump, they will be free from IDF attack. It’s a preposterous demand that Trump has made of a reluctant Netanyahu, and one that shows Trump is so desperate for a deal with Iran, that he is cravenly prepared to stop the IDF literally in its tracks.

Netanyahu cannot do what Trump demands, which is to stop all attacks on Beirut, and especially on Hezbollah’s stronghold of Dahiyeh. However, nor could he flatly reject Trump’s demand, knowing how vindictive Trump can be with those who do not submit to his diktats. Remember how he treated Zelensky with such contempt when the latter first visited him at the White House. Instead, Netanyahu has seemed to agree, but left such a loophole that will soon allow him to restart the IDF’s attack in Beirut. That loophole is this: Netanyahu announced that he had told Trump that “if Hezbollah doesn’t stop attacking our towns and citizens, Israeli will attack terror targets in Beirut.” How likely do you think it is that Hezbollah will completely stop attacking Israel? And note that even if the Hezbollah attacks are launched from outside Beirut, Israel reserves the right to attack Hezbollah sites in Beirut. Note also that Trump has not demanded that the IDF stop its operations outside Beirut, and these will no doubt continue.

Perhaps Hezbollah, desperate as it now is for the IDF to stop its relentless campaign to wipe out the terrorist group, will agree to stop fighting. But it will take very little for someone in Hezbollah, some fanatic determined to keep fighting the Zionists, to launch a few drones against Israel and thereby provide all the justification the IDF needs to resume its attack on Beirut.

        Millenia of demonization, humiliation and contempt are difficult to totally erase. We all see how quickly the hatred returns.

  2. I have lost most respect for this President. The way to deal w/ him is to lie to him: that shows strength in his mind, and he is then more pliant towards their demands. Look at the islamic regime: they are on the ropes, and there are factions lying to him, and he’s taking that at face value, and then transmitting demands on Israel

    Netanyahu may be devout in terms of not being deceitful, but he should treat Trump just like he treated Hizbullah when he tricked them into believing that it was safe for Nasrallah to be unguarded the day the Israeli bombs took him out. I like Hugh’s idea: pretend to agree to Trump’s demands, but then break it, using other pretexts. Right now, I don’t think his leadership of our military has sensible goals, and the best thing for him to do is withdraw US forces from the Gulf (since the protectees are mainly the Arab Gulf staes – Kuwait, Bahrein, Qatar and Emirates). Stop saying or doing anything about the region, beyond selling Israel weapons – a major plus for him, which he can proclaim as great billion dollar transactions at his rallies

    Israel knows what to do and can work w/ Pahlavi (who should now move from Maryland to Tel Aviv in preparations for his return, just like Khomenei returned from Paris to Najaf in 1979) to overthrow what’s left of the IRGC regime and install his transitional government. Once that’s done, everything else will be solved: shipping across the strait of Hormuz can resume, and what’s more, Iranian oil will be back on the entire world market, not just being sold to Beijing for a song, but to all Asian customers. Once that happens, energy markets will re-stabilize, regardless of what goes on in Ukraine, and world economies can see a decline in inflation

      Israel should not have to bow to Trump’s desire to appease domestic forces and it is not just America that ill-treats Israel on the domestic front basis.

    Historic 16th century hotel. The meals are all fine dining because that’s what the hotel was built for. Steaks and lobsters, massage chairs and pools. Who would want to leave? They’re posting it on social media to invite more invaders and criminals in.

      You overestimate Pakistan’s capabilities. They fought a war w/ India last year, and didn’t pull out their nukes, despite India attacking whatever targets it wanted. Pakistan did make some medium range missiles that can reach most of India, but they’re incapable of going beyond Iran, much less Israel

        This guy is basically saying Pakistan would blow up the world to save a country they just had a war with themselves two years ago lol. Iran and Pakistan just fought.

  7. Hezb’allah has already breached any ceasefire by firing more missiles into northern Israel. Unfortunately, Hezb’allah leaders have already scattered like roaches from Beirut, now that they know that they were a target for bombing.

    Ending the war with Iran and opening up the Strait of Hormuz will happen only by round the clock bombing on key Iranian infrastructure to make the country unlivable.

  8. Unless this is some kind of ruse, which I don’t think it is, I have to ask, what the eff is Trump doing? It’s still early to be sure but nonetheless I’m beginning to see shades of LBJ mired in the Vietnam War. I dearly hope these shades dissipate soon. Better.

    • You have to stop listening to talking heads and go look at some hard military stuff. You will get it within a hour of study.

      Every weapon has been used, there is no magic weapon that will change something. You have to break the will of the enemy. That simply won’t happen in this case.

      Negotiations are the way to go. Don’t be pessimistic. Trump will get the nuclear stuff out. Everything else, fu$$ it. America first.

  9. Pretty harsh comments about a guy who’s done what he has to support Israel. He’s attempting to navigate a difficult military/political situation. He loses the political contest, he loses, the conservative movement he represents loses and Israel subsequently loses. So this political war must be won, while the military action in Lebanon and Iran can be delayed. If a “deal” is made with Iran’s Mullahs, is it permanent? No, they’ll break it in short order and we, the US and Israel, can begin where we left off, destroying their infrastructure. Why the nasty comments about Trump after the support he’s given Israel?

    • Because this is Israel’s war, the US should never have got involved in it. Iran cannot. would not ever nuke USA. Trump promised he would not start any foreign wars, yet here we are.

      • “Iran….would not ever nuke USA.” naive statement: they have an advanced ICBM program which in a few years at most could deliver a nuke to the US, they could put a nuke on a plane or a ship and deliver it that way. Iran has explicitly threatened to “wipe out” or “destroy” Israel, the US and its European allies and the regime has a long, documented history of using state-sponsored violence and proxy networks to target Western interest. Trump also stated he would protect the US and its allies, which he is now doing. Israel, being the USA’s strongest ally, if you threaten Israel you threaten the US. What an ally is, if you attack our ally we will defend them.

      Looking at it now, I agree w/ you: the US should have just left it to Israel, and not gotten involved. It wouldn’t have split MAGA, a good part of which is anti-Israel, while Israel could have done whatever it needed to dismantle the regime by now

      Trump’s problem is that being a narcissist, he couldn’t bear the thought of Netanyahu getting all the glory, so he butted in. The US mission doesn’t begin to make sense: just senselessly bomb military targets in Iran regardless of who might be using them. The Israeli mission, by contrast, was very clear from day 1: destroy this regime and help bring about a democratic Iran, that stops exporting jihad, and then neither Israel nor the US not the Arab neighbors would have to bother about them

  10. Two days ago, there was a huge explosion in Tehran. It turns out that Israel took out the number one IRGC commander General Vahid Hakan, with a missile through his bedroom window. Sleep tight General Hakan and Allahu Akbar to you!

    General Vahid Hakan was running the show in Iran until his untimely death.

    The IDF barber wants to know “who’s next?”.

  11. I agree with these comments. As I have said many times before. Trump does not understand Islam. You cannot negotiate with any nation who follows Islam. Treaties and holding to agreements mean nothing. This is shameful. To put off taking out a dangerous Jihadi group to make a deal with the Master Mind who will not keep to it and laugh and scorn you. This has just ‘killed’ his presidency; it has wiped off all his good points and permanently wrecked his legacy!!! What a disappointment – a sordid mess!!
