The debacle that is Trump’s Iran deal just keeps getting worse. Vice President JD Vance was trumpeting Iran’s alleged allowance of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors as if it were some kind of breakthrough, and a victory for the United States. In reality, IAEA inspections were part of the Obama deal that Trump rightly derided as being one-sided. As it turns out, Trump apparently meant that Obama’s deal was too pro-American, and so Trump’s deal out-Obamas Obama by being so favorable to the Islamic Republic that it not only allows it to live and triumph over the millions of Iranians who had wanted it gone, but it gives the Islamic Republic of Iran the regional hegemony that Obama and Biden worked so hard to give it, and could make it a formidable enemy of the United States for decades to come.
Has Trump turned out to be the worst president in American history? That is a very real possibility. This Iran deal, and all the empty threats and displays of American weakness that have gone with it, could herald the beginning of a period in which America’s enemies take full advantage of that weakness, and end the U.S.’s role as the world’s lone superpower. And all this has happened because Trump was caught out with no strategy for dealing with Iran closing the Strait of Hormuz, and allowing himself to be put into a position where he had to make a deal, and beg for a deal, because staying the course appeared to be even worse. Generally, one shouldn’t undertake major military operations without careful planning and a clear objective. That’s what doomed us in Iraq and Afghanistan. Trump said he would end all that. Instead, he brought us a slapdash amateur hour that has made the situation even worse than it likely would have been if Kamala Harris had been elected president. If he isn’t the worst president, he is at very least the biggest disappointment in American political history.

JD Vance is a brilliant man and a very capable negotiator. If he doesn’t see this, he is purposely averting his eyes. Like Vance, the IRGC too is trying to save face not w/ the Iranian people at large, but rather w/ the regime supporters, who are all they have. So either Iran never agreed to this–or they are lying now and say they never did. In the end it almost doesn’t matter–they are not going to agree to nuclear inspections, in any case. This seems to be less and less any kind of real deal.

I am as confused as anyone about what is going on vis a vis Iran. I do know it would be a lot of help if Trump could ever learn to just SHUT THE HELL UP. I also know that would be an impossible task for Trump. But maybe once each day, he could seize the moment and SAY NOTHING? aw hell that ain’t gonna happen.
But at the same time, with respect to Robert Spencer and Jihad Watch and other commenters, I think it might be premature to despair.
