It was almost certainly a first in American history, or at very least, one of a handful of incidents in which a congressional candidate’s supporters celebrated his victory with screams of “Allahu akbar.” Thousands of people have been elected to Congress since 1789, and not once was there the slightest chance that the jihadi war cry would ever be shouted over any of these elections until Keith Ellison, Andre Carson, Ilhan Omar, and Rashida Tlaib triumphed over their rivals. And now that Adam Hamawy has won the Democrat primary for a congressional seat from New Jersey’s 12th District and will almost certainly be headed to Washington in January, the cry is going to get more and more common.

Winston 101: I have no problem with Islam having protected religious status IF ONLY it would be characterized as an evil religion, just as the extinct Aztec religion was malevolent (what with human sacrifice and cannibalism—so much for the wonderfulness and wisdom of American Indians, but I digress) and certain other religions like Satanism (and which latter religion is for complete and total losers).
The key here for me is NOT denying Islam religious status but recognition that while most religions are benign and good, irrespective of any theological truth contained in them (for the record, I think all religions are based in extensive fictions but this doesn’t mean they are worthless), a minority of religions are not benign and good, none more so than Islam.
Bottom line: Clarity, not banning or proscription, is the way to go. When added with common sense, which would include recognition that the Constitution is not a suicide pact, Islam can retain religious status but this does not equate to allowing more Muslims into America, or accommodating them ad nauseam, anymore than admitting or accommodating Marxists or Neo-Nazis should be the case, even though Marxism and Nazism are, and should remain, not illegal, but only for the detritus of our society (e.g., Graham Platner).
