The biggest military challenge to Israel and the Western alliance today comes from drones; they are cheap to manufacture and deliver a powerful blow; they are launched in waves, too numerous for them all to be intercepted. And the intercepting missiles cost far more than the drones themselves. Now Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promises that Israeli weapons scientists will be the first to come up with an answer to the challenge of drone warfare. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu asserted that Israel will be the first country in the world to solve the global issue of explosive drones during a speech at the Federation of Local Authorities in Israel Conference on Wednesday.
Touting Israel’s military success thus far against Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah, which often launches explosive drones towards Israeli territory and IDF troops operating in southern Lebanon, Netanyahu stated that Israeli efforts against the terrorist group have been “unbelievable.”
“Today, there is a security zone there that prevents Hezbollah and its remnants from invading the Galilee, because that was the plan. We are destroying all of this underground infrastructure,” Netanyahu stated.
He continued to describe that much of Israel’s progress against hostile actors in the region has come despite global pressure to halt military operations.
“If we had followed the suggestion to stop at Rafah, we would have gotten nada, zero, nothing. That is not who we are.”
Netanyahu continued to describe that Israel has accomplished “what no one believed we would do,” especially regarding operations against Iran.
“I have dedicated most of my adult life to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons,” Netanyahu said. “They told us: ‘A military operation in Iran? You are forbidden from doing that.’ ‘Eliminating the leadership of Iran? No, no, not that,’ so I did not listen to them.”…
The Islamic Republic of Iran is threatening the Trump administration, buoyed the tens of billions of dollars now flowing to it because American sanctions have been lifted, with much more to come from the assets about to be unfrozen. Tehran insists that it will not open the Strait of Hormuz until Israel withdraws entirely from southern Lebanon. Netanyahu has made clear that Israel will remain in its “security zone” in Lebanon unless, and not until, Hezbollah is completely disarmed. And his pledge that Israeli scientists will be the first to find a solution to the problem of explosive drones, that have been used not against Israel, but also against American military bases in the region, is not an idle boast. Given the record of these scientists’ past achievements in military matters, Netanyahu was expressing not a wish, but a promise.

The way to defeat the drones is with barrage balloons, just as England did in WWII. The use of barrage balloons was mostly discontinued after that, because aircraft then flew at altitudes above the 5009 foot mark, the practical limit (back then) for a balloon.
The barrage Bali was particularly effective against the German buzz bomb (V1 rockets) because they flew at low altitudes. Over 200 buzz bombs were intercepted by this method. Israel should deploy a few rows of barrage balloons along the Lebanese border and interior to Israel. Instead of heavy steel cables, a mixture of piano wire, coated amide rope (to reduce UV degradation) and nylon rope should be used. Some of the cables should be tethered to the ground for a slicing effect, and some just slightly weighted, for maximum entanglement. Drones’ propellers will get tangled and they will fall out of the sky. Color is important. The wires, rope, etc. must blend into 5he background so that the Hizb’allah operator cannot see the hanging lines.

This makes solid sense. Tethered nets make sense, as do flying nets pulled by defensive drone arrays. Not every defensive measure needs to be expensive and sophisticated. It just needs to WORK.
