Regarding Islam, Pope Leo has encouraged non-Muslims to “be a little less fearful and look for ways of promoting authentic dialogue and respect.” Accordingly, he should travel to Spain with no guards of any kind, and mingle frequently with the crowds who come out to see him. Any other course of action would be “Islamophobic,” wouldn’t it?

When Christianity goes flabby, Christianity is in far greater peril. Well, it’s very flabby now with many sects, including Roman Catholicism, the Anglican Church (in Britain and America but thankfully not in Africa), with a ton load of Lutherans, Presbyterians, et al. Christianity is a compassionate religion in this world (Islam no way is unless you submit to the point of embarrassing enslavement and even then it’s problematical) but this doesn’t mean Christianity can’t be wise and muscular in the ways it tries to survive. Just curious, somehistory, what you think of Benedict XVI, who truly was aware of Islam’s many nefarious aspects, as opposed to his two successors (both fools, here I am sure we will agree).
You see, for me though not religious as you know, Catholicism has often been a positive for mankind—theologically, philosophically, certainly in the areas of the arts (e.g., Michelangelo) and as a sustainer of society over all (e.g., all the hospitals and schools established by various orders of nuns through the centuries, at which one such hospital my father, a physician and devout Catholic, functioned for many years and with whom when I was still a boy would take “rounds” with him in that hospital most every Sunday).
I know there are Protestants who just want to trash Catholicism. But this is, to say the least, highly deficient and dispositive of someone pursuing an agenda and not the truth. Catholicism has its faults but at its best it has helped to save the greatest civilization of all time, never more than when the ancient world was collapsing and the Middle Ages was beginnig. What say you?

He says to ‘look at the fruit’ which a person produces. A “rotten tree cannot produce good fruit.”
He also said to avoid “false shepherds, false Christs, wolves in sheep’s clothing”. He said that many would claim to Him that they had done ‘good works’ and He will respond that He “never knew” them, because they work “lawlessness.”.
In Matthew 25, Christ tells of the persons who will gain eternal life and the ones going into destruction. The differences are based on how each person treats Christ’s brothers.
We can all see how the previous pope and the current pope have put Christ’s enemies on a pedestal, praising them, catering to them, and telling Christ’s “brothers” to *welcome* these enemies into their homes, claiming these adherents of islam are ‘like Christ’ in being homeless, etc. They have both ignored the slaughter of Christians by those *homeless* muzlims.
The fact that the man you reference was put out to pasture because he criticized islam, says a lot about him.
Everyone knows about the child abuse many Catholics have committed. However, not all Catholics have done that. Those that do, know it’s wrong. Those who know about it and do nothing, when they could do something, have guilt too.
Jesus said that there is a great net which catches all kinds of ‘fish’…humans…and the good ones are kept, while the unsuitable ones are returned to the sea.
I believe there are good people in every *sect* of Christianity. I have known Baptists, Presbyterians, etc. who seemed to be producing good fruit. The same is true of Catholics I know.
Thankfully, I don’t have to judge who gets eternal life and who does not. I have seen a lot of bad things done by people who claim to be Christian. Claiming it, and even associating with those who really do follow Christ, is not what will count when they are judged.
The current pope and the previous one, have produced a lot of rotten fruit. it’s the Christian’s duty to make known what is “good fruit” and what is “rotten”
But, the Judgment still is in the hands of One Who knows the heart.

Thanks for your reply, somehistory. Even though you are religious and I am not, we are on the same page respecting many things. And here is one of them I am certain about, to wit, how enormously beneficial to the human race would it be if all Muslims woke up tomorrow devout Christians and how inimical to the human race if the opposite were to occur.
I am a total skeptic, I’m just made this way (yes, at least to some extent whether one is religious or not I think such is dependent on biochemistry, which is neither a positive or a negative but just the way things are) but I know this much: Christianity is a positive for mankind even assuming its theology is not in accord with ultimate reality (and I concede it could be). Islam is not a positive for mankind but if it is in accord with ultimate realty, i.e., Islam being the true faith, then, as I have stated before here at JW, we live in a very creepy universe and God’s a jerk, something I would never state, even remotely, about the Christian religion.
I relish the exchange of ideas and you have provided me this on innumerable occasions here at JW. I am most grateful to you for this. Best to you and those you hold most dear.

I have learned a lot in the interchange of ideas over these past few years. Many things I did not know about the Catholic Church, and other facts from history.
Each human is unique, even identical twins.
The God in Whom I believe, knows each one better than we know ourselves. He is nothing like what is portrayed in islam. Better it would be if instead of being an adherent of that evil, more were just unsure and even skeptical.

I don’t think Catholicism has helped to save the greatest civilization of all time. Europe before the Renaissance was still in the dark age, it was the Middle East and North Africa that were developed and it was the Orthodox Christianity that mainly prevailed there, not the Roman Catholicism. Roman Catholicism failed to bring anything from the 4th century to the Renaissance era.
Later, after free from the teaching of Catholicism, great minds were able to make new ideas and inventions, then the Vatican had no choice to change its view on science..

As the Western half of the Roman Empire was collapsing in the 5th century AD, the Papacy stepped in to fill the vacuum, what with pontiffs like Pope Leo I (440-461) and continued by many other Popes such as Gregory I (590-604) who was keenly responsible for converting the Anglo-Saxons to Christianity. There is also the matter of many Popes combating the onslaught of Islam, for instance, among so many other examples that could be cited, Urban II (1088-1099) calling for the First Crusade.
In the artistic sphere between the 4th century and the Renaissance there was produced by the Catholic world such wonders as Gregorian Chant, Romanesque and Gothic architecture and many illuminated manuscripts created during such periods as the Carolingian and Ottonian Renaissances (and let’s not forget the many contributions of Irish Catholicism (e.g., the Book of Kells).
There is also the enormous intellectual contributions by the medieval Catholic Church as evidenced by such outstanding thinkers like Erigena, Anselm, Aquinas, Willian of Ockham and Duns Scotus. I would additionally note here that the Orthodox Christian world never produced truly original thinkers as did the Catholic world, especially when taking into account giants like Anselm and Aquinas, never mind others such as Albertus Magnus, Abelard, et al.
Following the Middle Ages, the Catholic world produced some of the greatest art in all of history, not only during the Renaissance but thereafter, for instance the magnificent creation which was Baroque Art, the architectural response to the Reformation. Yes, Catholicism held up scientific development at times but so did the Orthodox and Protestant worlds. After all, no great scientists appeared in the Russian Orthodox world, which was arguably more close-minded than the Catholic world, and the Protestant world burned witches and stifled dissent just as much as the Catholic world did at times.
I’m sorry but if you tried to get things more wrong than you did, you would have had to try extra hard. One thing you stated was true, i.e. you are not a historian.
