This is a clear indication of a deep split within the government of the Islamic Republic, but it’s likely not anything that $300,000,000,000 won’t heal. Trump has given the Islamic Republic a new lease on life, betraying the long-suffering people of Iran.

That’s quite a claim given Iran’s past belicose history, current schism, and ongoing attacks from both sides which will likely destroy any “agreement” – the current MoU is not even accepted by all Iran power centers.
This conflict is not over and if Israel/US want a real agreement it will require an actual defeat of Iran without an occupation, something a tit-for-tat conflict cannot achieve.

Hopefully the internal rift will grow, and they’ll kill each other, or rat out the positions of their IRGC rivals to Israel. Israel needs to leaflet Iran with a WhatsApp account address to send tips on the locations of high level commanders.

Yeah, I think it’ll happen, and I do not share Robert’s skepticism that the $300B will paper over it. For one, that $300B is supposed to be private investment, not taxpayer money, and the Gulf Arabs right now are not in the mood to help Iran, of all countries. For one, their own economies have been flailing: Saudi Arabia has had to cut back on the Neom project, as well as several other favorite projects of theirs. Qatar has lost 1/3 of its LNG capacity. Plus as businessmen, none of them would want to put money in an unstable place such as Iran
So that then brings us to the divisions within the islamic regime. First of all, the majority of normal Iranian people are opposed to this ceasefire or these agreements: they want US and/or the Israelis to finish the job of overthrowing the regime, so that they can get Pahlavi, and then a democratic government. So that then leaves only the regime supporters
It’s worth noting that the only people who support the regime are people themselves brainwashed by decades of shi’a propaganda, and who have poetry sessions celebrating Heydar (one of Ali’s other names in Iran). They actually do believe that the US and Israel are the big and small Satans. If one is someone who actually believes that, why would that person be willing to negotiate anything w/ them? Hence this opposition to them for even appearing in the same room: they are denouncing them as traitors for talking to the people who murdered their dear leader Ali Khamenei. It also explains why Ghalibaf rebuffed Vance: the last thing he wanted was that photo to be used against him within the regime. (Ideally, Vance, if he had a clue, would have been relieved by that as well). That is why nobody in the regime wants to be seen as negotiating w/ the Americans, no matter what: they’d lose the support of the 10-20% of Iranians still supporting them, and they wouldn’t gain the support of the other Iranians either, who either want Pahlavi or some other democratic leader.
Which is why I haven’t been denouncing Trump’s truths praising some of their leaders, moronic as it may seem on the surface. His audience isn’t exactly us: it’s not even the Pahlavi supporters in Iran. It’s the remaining regime supporters of the islamic republic. By praising anybody in the regime, he reduces the credibility of that guy in the eyes of those supporters, forcing him to issue public denials of what was actually said in those talks. While the contents of the MOU haven’t been encouraging, the one silver lining in all of this has been fracturing the support of the regime even among its most fanatical suppoers
Also remember that unlike the normal Iranian civilians who are unarmed, the regime supporters live by different rules, and are probably armed. If there are now clashes b/w different IRGC factions over who are the traitors and who are the true believers, it won’t be like January 8-9th, when only one side was armed. This time, both will be, and it could end up like the 2 cats of Kilkinney. Which is why this would have been a very smart execution of the war, even though it would have challenged our faith in Trump

By giving Iran $300 Billion, Trump is showing his good will and that he means well. This may help convince these insane killers to be nice. If it doesn’t work he can always give them more.
