A few days ago Israel, in response to pressure from President Donald Trump, promised that it would not bomb Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut as long as Hezbollah stopped its missile and drone attacks. It would, however, continue to attack Hezbollah operatives and weapons depots outside of Beirut. Hezbollah ignored the caveat, launched missiles and drones into the Jewish state, and then, as promised, the IDF resumed its bombing attacks in Dahiyeh, Hezbollah’s stronghold in southern Beirut. This annoyed our mercurial president, who idiotically berated Israel when it was Hezbollah that had triggered Israel’s response.
Now Iran has sent ballistic missiles into northern Israel, where so far they have all been intercepted without any Israeli casualties. Iran promises there will be more attacks in coming days. Israel has promised a suitable response. Trump has expressed frustration with Iran, which, he said, could have had a deal ”that is so close” on “Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday.” But he has not expressed anger with Iran, and has given no sign of approval for the Israeli reprisal that is sure to be launched against the Islamic Republic, and most maddeningly, has again berated Israel for bombing Hezbollah sites in Beirut. Early on Monday morning, he wrote: “Israel and Iran must immediately stop ‘shooting.’ President DONALD J. TRUMP.” And then, bizarrely, an hour later he added: “Both sides, Israel and Iran, are looking to do an immediate CEASEFIRE! Final negotiations on ‘Peace’ are proceeding, subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way. The Blockade will remain in place, and in full force and effect, until a ‘Final Deal’ is reached. Things should move quickly. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”
What’s to come is still unsure, but the Israelis, finishing that Shakespearean line, know that “in delay there lies no plenty.” By the time you read this, Iran may have launched more ballistic missiles at Israel. There may be Israeli casualties. But whether there are or not, Israel is determined to again teach Tehran a lesson, and Israel will within days have launched its own, many times more deadly, strikes on Iran. And Trump? He will tell Netanyahu not to respond to Iran’s initial attacks. And this time I hope, and expect, that the Israelis, who by now understand whom they are dealing with, and realize that Trump is ready to ignore Israel’s security needs — look at his angry words after the IDF attack on Beirut — in order to get a deal, for no reason other than to end the war with Iran before the midterms.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Sunday that “the Israeli army must stop its attacks in Lebanon,” adding that if Israel expands the strikes [in Lebanon] or responds to Iranian measures,” then “it will face crushing and painful blows.” Israel has a simple response: it will stop its attacks on Hezbollah, including in Beirut, if Hezbollah stops its attacks on Israel. What part of that do the Iranians not understand? As for Iran’s ballistic missiles raining down on northern Israel — missiles that have all been intercepted without any Israeli casualties — Israel’s response to that attack is almost certain to be many times more powerful. At that point, if the Iranians are sensible, they will stop retaliating and lick their wounds. But when have the fanatics running the Islamic Republic ever been sensible? And Trump, who on Sunday, just after Iran launched its attack, told Axios, “I am going to call [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu right now and tell him not to strike back. … Each of them had their fun. Israel had its strike and Iran had its strike. We don’t need another one,” should stop with his idiotic equivalency. Israeli sources told several news outlets that the IDF planned to deliver a “powerful” response to Iran. It has no intention of being held back by Trump or anyone else.
And after Israel retaliates, will Trump then come to his senses, and express admiration for the precision and deadliness of Israel’s attack on Iran, or will he still be furious with Israel for, as he sees it, “disobeying” him both by attacking Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut and then by retaliating against Tehran when he, Grandmaster Trump, had told the Israelis not to?
