The British Jewish actor Elliot Levey is currently starring opposite John Lithgow in the New York production of “Giant,” which recently completed its original run in London. It’s a story about the writer, and antisemite, Roald Dahl. Levey has seen the march of “Islamofascism”and the spread of antisemitism in his own country, and he wanted to tell American Jews what Jews now must endure in the U.K.., a warning of what could happen in America if Jews are not vigilant. One of the British stars of the Tony-nominated show “Giant” is battling antisemitism in art and in life — and he has a dire warning for New Yorkers.
Elliot Levey plays Jewish publisher Tom Maschler opposite John Lithgow’s Roald Dahl in the critically acclaimed Broadway hit, a drama about the famous children’s author’s antisemitism.
The show originated in London where Levey lives with his family.
There, the actor would have to dodge mobs of rabid anti-Israel protesters waving Palestinian flags and keffiyehs every Saturday on his way to the West End theatre where the show was staged.
“[There were] thousands calling to globalize the intifada, which means to kill Jews around the world,” Levey, a self-proclaimed “proud Jew,” told The Post.
Working on Broadway has been a welcome reprieve.
“New York is the safest place for Jews on the planet,” he said….
That was once true, but Levey hasn’t been in New York long enough to see those pro-Hamas crowds demonstrating outside synagogues, or chanting against Israel on the Columbia campus, and he hasn’t yet seen how the new mayor, the Muslim Zohran Mamdani, who despises the Jewish state, has refused to adequately police the violent protests against Israel that are now an almost daily occurrence in New York. After a few months of living in New York City, I suspect he will be less sanguine about the safety of Jews in the city and in America.
He cautions Jews in New York to protect the relative haven they have here.
Jews in New York are moving heaven and earth to “protect that relative haven,” but with a mayor who has refused to condemn the phrase “from the river to the sea/Palestine will be free,” which is a call for the Jewish state to disappear and to be replaced by the state of “Palestine,” and worse still, he won’t condemn the chant “globalize the Intifada,” which is a call to kill Jews everywhere, they are beginning to feel besieged.
“Don’t let it go. Look after it,” he said. “You have this magic city. You’re safe and proud and confident. You can live a full open American life.”
Is it true that Jews in New York City today feel “safe” and “confident”? Or are many of them filled with anxiety about antisemitic assaults on themselves and on synagogues, worried about what the Muslim mayor will do next to show his complete want of sympathy for both Jews in New York City and in Israel? The golden age for Jews in New York City has now come to an end.
Without calling out any American politician by name, the 2025 Olivier Award winner said he’s wary of “slick American politicians” but “you guys like your slick suits and smiley faces.”…
I think he means the perennially smiling Zohran Mamdani, who smiles and smiles while there is murder in his heart for both the city’s Jews, and especially, for Israelis..
“America is still in its pomp, in your heyday,” said Levey, whose grandparents survived Eastern European pogroms before emigrating to England. “America is still Zion, the city on the hill.”
Is that still true? Is America for Jews still a kind of Zion, “the city on the hill”? Or does the loss of support for Israel among those on the left in the Democratic Party and on the right the Republican Party suggest that America is no longer that “city on a hill”? Do Jews feel safe in America as they once did? Or are they right to be anxious, especially in New York City, where the mayor has failed to adequately protect individual Jews and their institutions — Jewish schools, synagogues — from violent attack?
He will eventually learn that things are not quite so wonderful for American Jews as he imagines, though by comparison with what Jews are enduring in the U.K., they may appear so to Levey. Give him a few months in Mamdani-dominated New York, and he’ll curb his enthusiasm.

Our esteemed president took an oath to protect our country from enemies. What do you call Mandami and his Islamic allies? If the mayor and governor are not providing protection for NYC’s Jewish citizens then Trump should declare the Insurrection Act, use the National Guard and/or the military to arrest and detain the perpetrators and arrest Mandami and Hochul also.
