25-year-old Heath Howard is running for Congress: “Gen Z New Hampshire Congressional Candidate Refuses to Acknowledge Israel’s ‘Right to Exist,’” by Corey Walker, Algemeiner, May 12, 2026:
A Democratic state lawmaker in New Hampshire now running for US Congress is facing mounting criticism after comments in which he refused to affirm the legitimacy of Israel as a Jewish state, reigniting a broader political debate over antisemitism and the boundaries of criticism of Israel.
During a new interview on WMUR’s “Close-Up,” congressional candidate Heath Howard rejected the idea that Israel possesses a unique “right to exist” as a Jewish nation. Howard also drew an equivalence between Israel, the closest US ally in the Middle East, and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, a US-designated terrorist organization.
“While there are a number of condemnable actions that they’ve taken, like any sort of government, I don’t think that Hamas has a right to exist. I don’t think Israel has a right to exist. I think that people have a right to exist,” Howard said.
So Israel has no right to exist, just like Hamas. They are equally illegitimate, in Heath Howard’s moral calculus. Since he says that “people have a right to exist,” would he concede that primo, the Jewish people have a right to exist; secundo, that the persecution and murder of Jews down through the centuries, culminating in the Holocaust, entitles them especially to a state of their own if the Jewish people’s “right to exist” is to be secured? Not only the Jews of Israel need their tiny state if they are to survive, but Jews outside the state, faced with an epidemic of antisemitism, need Israel as a place of refuge to which they can repair whenever the situation of Jews elsewhere becomes too dangerous.
Heath Howard ought to be asked if he believes the United States “has a right to exist.”And if he thinks it does, he must explain why the U.S. has that right, but not Israel.
Howard then appeared to defend the prospect of Hamas’s continued rule over Gaza as a form of Palestinian autonomy, saying, “We need to respect the will of the Palestinian people, and we need to make sure that they have access to democracy. We need to make sure that we allow the people to have self-determination.”
Hamas is a terrorist group, which the American government, and most of the civilized world, designates as such. Does Heath Howard think he understands Hamas better than the American government does? Does he not believe it is a terrorist group? On October 7, 2023, members of Hamas smashed into Israel from Gaza and proceeded to gang-rape, torture, mutilate, and murder 1,200 Israelis, and kidnap 251 others. Whole families were bound together and burned alive. Girls were raped and had their vaginas cut out with knives. Women had their breasts sliced off. Men had their genitalia cut off, and both men and women had their eyes gouged out. Hamas men videotaped themselves committing these atrocities; they were proud of what they did, and wanted to show their family and friends back in Gaza. Some telephoned home from the scene of their crimes. One killer called his mother and said, proudly, “Mom, I just killed ten Jews.”
This is the group that Heath Howard thinks should be allowed to rule in Gaza if it has the votes. Of course, he fails to note that Hamas has ruled Gaza with an iron fist, beginning in 2006, when it killed hundreds of Fatah members and drove the rest out; it has consistently murdered all of its political opponents in the Strip who publicly criticized its rule. Hamas has tortured to death those who, such as Uday Rebay, took part in public protests against Hamas rule. There have been many others, at least a hundred in Gaza, whom Hamas since 2006 has tortured to death or summarily executed. These people had dared to publicly criticize Hamas for its massive corruption. Just three senior Hamas leaders, Khaled Meshaal, Mousa Abu Marzouk, and the late Ismail Haniyeh, managed to steal $11 billion from the aid that foreign donors gave to the Gazans. Hamas has also stolen food and humanitarian aid and resold it to people living in Gaza, who were supposed to receive that aid for free.
Given all that, does Heard Howard still want to put Israel on the same moral plane as Hamas? Howard seems to think that as long as Hamas gets the most votes, no matter if those votes were obtained through terror and intimidation of its political enemies, it should be considered the legitimate ruler of Gaza.

A 25 year old? I hate to insult Zoomers, since my son is 24, but he’s probably graduated thinking that men can become women and women men, at will. Which is why he ignores the question. There is also the Matt Walsh conundrum of defining a woman w/o using the word “woman” – something necessary to avoid a circular or recursive definition
Yeah, people have a right to exist, but then, do they then also have a right to choose to be Jews, Christians, Hindus, Buddhists? I would have included “muslim” in this question, but given that it’s unknowable whether a muslim seriously believes in jihad, I don’t. Also, the equivalence b/w Israel and Hamas is false: it would either be b/w Israel and the fictitious “State of Palestine”, or b/w Hamas and Likud – one can only equate similar entities
Oh, and Mr Howard, a woman is an adult, female human. Nothing more, nothing less!
