France: Muslim bookstore carries book saying the non-Muslim is ‘an enemy of Allah, his messenger, and his believers’

There are no doubt many books that say the same thing in the same bookstore, and in many others, as this isn’t “extremism,” it is standard Islam. The Qur’an says: “There is an excellent example for you in Abraham and those with him, when they told their people, Indeed, we are guiltless of you and all that you worship besides Allah. We have done with you. And there has arisen between us and you hostility and hatred forever, until you believe in Allah alone.” (60:4) The French authorities are either unaware of or completely indifferent to this fact, as are their counterparts all over the West. Meanwhile, Muslims are reading such statements and taking them seriously. How will this scenario play out?

In the “Phocaean City,” radicalism is not preached solely in mosques; it is also sold in bookstores. Behind polished shop windows, a body of rigorist literature operates under a veil, more or less shielded by the blind spots of the law.

Located in the hills of Marseille’s 14th arrondissement, the Islamic bookstore Dar Sunnah is the city’s top-ranked listing on Google, boasting a sleek website—albeit one conspicuously lacking a phone number. Niqabs, jilbabs, and packs of musk perfumes occupy just as much shelf space there as the religious texts themselves. We visited the shop in person to acquire certain books that are impossible to find in any other brick-and-mortar bookstore—such as *Responses from Great Scholars to Questions from Western Muslims* (Réponses des grands savants aux questions des musulmans d’Occident), published in Algeria by Dar Al Mouwahidin. Inside the shop, the three-volume set is prominently displayed on the main table. “They sell well—especially among converts,” a bookseller wearing a hijab remarked.

What exactly do these “responses” contain—and, more importantly, what lies within the commentaries provided by a certain Saïd Ibn Mohammed Al Jazairi? *Taqiyya* is the order of the day: speaking without truly speaking, using rhetorical convolutions to mask a religious hostility directed toward the West, Jews, Christians, polytheists, and other infidels. One of these methods of concealment involves inserting hateful remarks into the midst of chapters whose titles give no hint of what is to come. Thus, in the chapter titled “Stealing from a Non-Muslim”—which initially advises against theft—one suddenly reads: “In religious dealings, the non-Muslim is treated according to his status: he is detested and loathed [sic], and our belief regarding him is that he is an enemy of Allah, of His Messenger, and of His believers.” According to Christophe Bigot, a lawyer specializing in freedom of expression, such remarks constitute incitement to hatred. “The law prohibits the exhortation—even if implicit—to discriminate on the grounds of non-membership in a religious group,” the legal expert explains. The handbook accumulates injunctions: thinly veiled encouragement of proselytizing, of praying in the workplace, or of practicing polygamy in countries where it is prohibited; the confinement of women to the domestic sphere; bans on associating with non-Muslims, who are deemed untrustworthy; and diatribes against secularism. A chapter titled “Admiring the Status Attained by Jews” implies that the latter are wealthy and powerful—a notion the author is quick to obscure by ceasing to single out Jews specifically, reducing them instead to the status of mere infidels like any others, and deeming their assets ill-gotten…
