While Trump’s threat stems from the EU refusing to support the war on the Islamic Republic of Iran, there is a history of disappointments and imbalances.
First, the U.S. pays for 62% of NATO’s total $1.59 trillion defense spending. There are 32 member countries in NATO: the US, Canada, Turkey and 29 European nations. So why is the US paying significantly more than half? Also, most EU countries are governed by ruinous leftists who have betrayed their own people’s right to free speech, decimated their national security with open-door immigration policies, celebrated “diversity” by allowing Islamic supremacist and Sharia incursions, and repeatedly demonstrated their loathing for their own history and traditions. Then there’s Turkey, ruled by the Islamic supremacist President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who envisions the revival of the Ottoman Empire (a global caliphate) with himself as caliph. Turkey should long ago have been kicked out of NATO. And finally, the Islamic Republic of Iran is a global menace; if anyone should be supporting the war on Iran, it should be EU member states, particularly considering that Iranian missiles can reach Europe. NATO has indeed become a “paper tiger” or worse.
In January, Iran Watch reported that “Iran’s missile arsenal remains one of the largest and most diverse in the Middle East… U.S. Central Command’s General Kenneth McKenzie stated that Iran possessed ‘over 3,000’ ballistic missiles.” In 2015, the Islamic Republic of Iran formalized a “self-imposed” missile-range limit of 2,000 km. But this limit depends on the Islamic Republic of Iran itself, which could easily abandon that limit for a much longer range, if equipped “with a lighter warhead.” Iran Watch also pointed out Iran’s desperate urgency to multiply its missile arsenal over the few months before the war on Iran, which was and still is a cause for grave concern. Yet the EU has dropped the ball on the war on Iran. Again, as they always do when it comes to strengthening Western interests.
It is high time and about time that the US abandon NATO — which has evolved over time to demonstrate anti-Western values and anti-Americanism all too often.
“Trump Threatens to Sever Ties With NATO Over Iran Split: ‘They Weren’t There for Us,’” by David Gilmour, Mediaite, April 1, 2026:
President Donald Trump said he is weighing whether to withdraw the United States from NATO, escalating tensions with European allies after they refused to support his war effort against Iran.
In a phone interview with The Telegraph published on Wednesday, the president repeated his jab that NATO was a “paper tiger” and cast serious doubt on America’s future with the alliance.
Asked directly by the newspaper’s reporters whether he was considering pulling the U.S. from the organization, Trump replied: “Oh yes, I would say [it’s] beyond reconsideration. I was never swayed by NATO. I always knew they were a paper tiger, and [Russian President Vladimir] Putin knows that too, by the way.”
The comments come after NATO members declined the president’s appeals that they send warships to help reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a key oil route effectively shut by Iran, sending global energy prices sharply higher.
“Beyond not being there, it was actually hard to believe. And I didn’t do a big sale. I just said, ‘Hey,’ you know, I didn’t insist too much. I just think it should be automatic,” he said of the allies’ reluctance to join the Iran conflict.
Continuing, Trump signalled frustration with allies he said had failed to reciprocate U.S. support in past conflicts: “We’ve been there automatically, including Ukraine. Ukraine wasn’t our problem. It was a test, and we were there for them, and we would always have been there for them. They weren’t there for us.”
The president also singled out the UK, where The Telegraph is headquartered, snubbing the country’s military strength and questioning whether it would be effective in Iran at all: “You don’t even have a navy. You’re too old and had aircraft carriers that didn’t work.”…

Something like 34 years overdue. After the Cold War, NATO’s charter was never updated to define who the new enemies are. It should have been China, and Yeltsin should have been invited to join NATO. Then we wouldn’t have had today’s predicament of a Beijing-Moscow axis – something that we successfully avoided throughout the Cold War
It’s still not too late. Once this Iran saga is over, we should be able to move out of the Middle East completely, aside from maybe helping Greece, Cyprus, Armenia and Israel to protect themselves against a belligerent Turkey. Like Reza Pahlavi noted, once there is a secular democracy in Iran, our troops will be able to return home. Or if they have to be stationed abroad, put them either in Latin America, wherever needed, or better yet, put them in the Indo-Pacific. Harden Taiwan and all the countries around China, so that Beijing’s hegemony is at least put in check
Let the EU continue whatever is left of NATO. Dunno what value they’ll be to Canada, but Ottawa is welcome to remain there as well!

How would welcoming a dictator into NATO have stopped Putin from invading his neighbors and wantign to destroy the West? No reason to suppose that it would have.

As Western Countries(eg. France, UK, Germany, etc.) become more Islamized, these countries become worthless supporters in NATO contributing almost nothing to an alliance. Like the malignant cancer of the 50+ Islamic Countries in the UN, the Islamized Western Countries become a malignant cancer to the freedom-loving West. Meanwhile, Islam and its Muslims fund, teach, and support Criminal-Terrorist-Gang Enterprise that infect Local, State, and Federal Governments in the West using deceit, discrimination, segregation, violence, and terrorism as taught by Allah in Islam’s Qur’an(Qur’an 9:5, 29, 111; 49:15, etc.). Allah in Qur’an 5:51 says, “O you who have believed[Muslims], DO NOT TAKE the Jews and the Nasara(Christians) as friends. They are friends to one another. And whoever among you takes them as friends, so surely he is of them. Surely Allah does not guide the unjust people.” Also, Allah says that Jews are the worst enemies of the Muslims in Qur’an 5:82.
Allah in Qur’an 9:29 commands, “Engage in war with those who do not believe in Allah nor in the last day[Non-Muslims]. Nor forbid what Allah and his messenger forbid[in Islamic Law], nor believe in the religion of the truth[Islam] among those who have given the book[Jews and Christians] until they pay the jizyah[Extortion Payment] out of hand and they are subdued[disgraced].”

NATO was formed to slow the spread of communism/Marxism/Socialism/fascism. Now most of the member countries except the US are run by some form of Marxism, and some are on the brink of becoming Islamic countries (eg the UK is almost totally Islamic in it’s leadership).

Yeah, NATO today might as well be the
WarsawBrussels Pact, since most of its members have governments that arrogate to themselves powers that the Soviet Politburo once had. Not to mention – the enemy of their people – the Mohammedans – are already within their borders, so talking about defending against Russia is redundant. In fact, even the Kremlin doesn’t do to normal Russians what Western countries do to their citizensJames Lincoln says
The United States needs to look at the 32 NATO member countries and carefully ascertain which ones share our values – like Poland and Hungary – and which ones don’t.
And the United States should also look at non-NATO member countries – like Israel – which share our values.
And a new alliance should be formed.

Do some research & find out what NATO is about Trump. It is a defensive organisation that is there to step in if one of its members are attacked. It’s not an offensive organisation that is going to step in because you decided to attack Israel’s enemy that was of no threat to you.

Its primary charter was to protect the West – Western Europe, as well as the US and Canada – from the Soviet Bloc – Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. That ended in 1991, when it was formally disbanded, and by 1992, the Soviet Union was itself no longer one country but 15
Since then, as I pointed out above, NATO’s charter was never updated to define what its mission since was. The few times NATO did act was anything but defensive. One was an aggressive war against Serbia to pry out Kosovo from Belgrade’s control. Another was in 2011 to interfere in the Libyan uprising against Gadhafi, who had normalized relations w/ the West, and where there wasn’t a good reason to interfere. Neither of these wars were defensive. NATO also brags that it invoked Article 5 after 9/11/2001, but the only thing they did was donate peacekeepers after the US had ousted the Taliban from power
In this case, Trump is perfectly justified in demanding that NATO help not w/ the war itself, but in keeping the Strait of Hormuz open, since
⮞ It’s all other NATO members, not the US or Canada, who get their oil from that region, and who have a bigger stake in keeping it open
⮞ If US is to be a member of this club, then it should get all the benefits of being a member. Eg UK shouldn’t deny the US the use of bases like Diego Garcia if both are members of the club
Since Europe/NATO does not want to do that, fine! But after that, it’s not the responsibility of the US to be a part of NATO and provide a military shield to Europe against a Russian threat – real or imagined. We have other priorities in other regions. China today is the bigger adversary to the US than Russia, which has proven itself to be a paper tiger over the last 4 years. We need to be focussed on the Shield of the Americas for this hemisphere, and on the Indo-Pacific region to contain Beijing

I agree with this analysis of NATO, and totally agree if your are a member you support each other or get out.
