Pakistan would have us believe that it the “neutral mediator” between the U.S. and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Israel has been the ally of the U.S. in their joint war against the Islamic Republic, and whatever deal the Americans now make to end the war in Iran are likely to also obligate Israel. So it was most unsettling when the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif insisted that the current two-week ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran would apply to Lebanon, meaning that Israel would have to stop its attacks on the jihad terror group Hezbollah during that period. Both Israel and the U.S. have insisted that the Pakistani-brokered agreement was never meant to apply to Lebanon. I know whom I believe.
Now there is more evidence that Pakistan is not, and cannot be, that “neutral mediator” between Iran and its enemies, the U.S. and Israel, that it presents itself as being. The Pakistani defense minister has just anathematized Israel in apocalyptic terms. Israel is “evil and a curse for humanity,” Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said in a since-deleted Thursday post to X/Twitter, adding that he hopes its founders will “burn in hell.”
His remarks come as Islamabad tries to position itself as a diplomatic player in efforts to contain the widening regional war.
Pakistan has publicly pushed for an end to Israeli attacks in Lebanon while also preparing to host diplomatic talks about the Iran war in Islamabad.
Pakistan said Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam had sought its support for an “immediate end” to the attacks, Reuters reported. An Iranian delegation was due in Islamabad that night for talks tied to the broader crisis, a separate Reuters report said.
“Israel is evil and a curse for humanity,” Asif wrote in the deleted post. While peace talks were taking place in Islamabad, “genocide” was being carried out in Lebanon, he said. Innocent civilians were being killed by Israel “first in Gaza, then in Iran, and now in Lebanon,” and the bloodshed was continuing without pause, he added.
When the enemy embeds its combatants, and hides its weapons, in civilian areas, of course there will be some civilian casualties. But for there to be “genocide,” there has to be intent, and the IDF has never displayed the intention to kill civilians. Quite the contrary. It routinely warns civilians away from areas about to be targeted. In just the first six months of its campaign against Hamas in Gaza, the IDF dropped millions of leaflets, sent millions of text messages, and made millions of robocalls, all to warn civilians to move away from danger. West Point Professor John Spencer, an expert on urban warfare, concluded after his study of the war in Gaza that “Israel has done more and implemented more measures to prevent civilian harm than any military in the history of urban warfare.” It is Hamas in Gaza, and Hezbollah in Lebanon, that increase casualties among their own civilians by putting fighters and guns in their midst; more casualties means they can score propaganda points against Israel.
Can Pakistan be a neutral mediator when its Defense Minister Khawaja Asif writes such things as these: Benjamin Netanyahu is “the biggest criminal of humanity” who ought to be “kidnapped” and brought to court? He even suggested that Turkey could abduct him. In other posts, Asif has written that “Zionism is a threat to humanity,” that “Israel is evil and a curse for humanity,” and that he, Khawaja Asif, hoped those who created “this cancerous state” on Palestinian land “to get rid of European Jews” would “burn in hell.”

Your comment here is both true and comical, I love how you call it “Fuckistan”. I recall reading a book years ago, I believe it was called “Wrong Enemy”. In that book, an Afghan War reported argues we invaded the wrong country and that is why the 21 years long Afghanistan War was a lost cause. We should’ve invaded Pakistan, not Afghanistan. I would argue we should’ve invaded Iran, not Iraq.

On a funny note, Pakistan botched the role of a mediator. It happens that the IRGC is now badly fractured, and there are multiple factions that are making conflicting demands of the US or just flatly stating that there will be no ceasefire or negotiations. One of the factions – maybe the Araghchi or another – gave the US some of the modified proposals that the islamic republic agrees to the terms demanded by Trump. The Pakis forwarded that to Witkoff and his gang, and then there were fierce denials from the Iranian side, leaving Islamabad red-faced
The real problem that the islamic regime has is that its supporters, which is something like 10-20% of the population, believes its lies that the regime is winning, and would absolutely mutiny if any agreement was reached w/ the 2 “Satans” – US and Israel. Already, the regime is opposed by 80% of the population, regardless of whether or not they support a monarchy. On top of that, if they upset that remaining core faction of their supporters, there will be a complete mutiny. As a result, any good vibes that come from Trump, be it about a ceasefire or anything else, can not be accepted gracefully by the regime. On the contrary, they have to do a major PR cleanup w/ their core supporters. As a result, every announcement that Trump makes seems to be Machiavellian 😈
The downside: the US policy on this war seems to be pretty clueless. Israel’s is somewhat better, in that regime change is a well known goal of Jerusalem. Problem is that Reza Pahlavi seems to want to avoid any and all bloodshed, and is becoming tooooo dependent on the IRGC/Basij getting decimated. They have already lost all their central leaders, and every field head is freelancing on his own. It’s time for him to signal to his supporters to rise and battle the remnant Basij units on the streets of various cities and other places in Iran. We don’t have forever to wait until the last Basij commando is dead before Pahlavi returns and his transition team takes over. He needs to start moving, and moving quickly
