In Minneapolis Public Schools, Prayer Rooms and Foot-washing Stations for Muslims

In a suburb of Minneapolis, two high schools are adding prayer rooms and foot-washing stations for Muslim students. Apparently the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment is to be violated in order to comply with the needs of local Muslims. Construction plans obtained by Alpha News show a Minnesota school district is planning to build a “prayer room” and foot-washing station at two high school buildings. Those blueprints have since gone viral on social media and kicked off a debate about religion in schools.

Earlier this month, Alpha News received blueprints for an ongoing renovation at Park Center High School and Osseo High School. Both of those schools are a part of Osseo Area Schools which is located in the northwest suburbs of Minneapolis.

In blueprints for Park Center, one room is clearly labeled “prayer room” while Osseo blueprints show plans for a “footwash.” Prayer rooms are commonly used by Muslims as they observe their daily prayers. Meanwhile, foot-washing is a prerequisite for Muslims before they pray.

When asked about those blueprints, a spokesperson for the school district said “there are two phy-ed locker rooms with lower sinks that could be used for footwashing at [Osseo]. These were included in update plans after hearing from user groups on student needs.”

The spokesperson also told Alpha News that “Park Center Senior High has a multipurpose space in their construction plans. The space could be used for prayer, or other student or staff multipurpose needs.”

Alpha News reported on the blueprints in a social media post that included images of the prayer room and foot-washing station. That post went viral as many expressed their outrage and noted the school district’s apparent deference to Islam over other faiths.

Other schools in the Minneapolis/St. Paul have reportedly had prayer rooms in place for the last year. If those prayer rooms were in place last year, why was there no challenge made then to their constitutionality?

Building these prayer rooms for Muslims only, and providing foot-washing stations that will be used only by Muslims, in two public schools, is clearly a case of the state favoring one religion, Islam, over all others. This is a violation of the Establishment Clause, whose purpose is to prohibit government sponsorship of religion, prevent undue coercion, and ensure government neutrality between religions and between religion and non-religion. The government is involved here because these are public schools, agents of the state; the prayer rooms and foot-washing stations are being provided only for the adherents of one religion, Islam, and are favoring that religion above all others, thus violating the requirement of government neutrality between religions.

There are clearly so very many Muslim students at Park Center High School and Osseo High School that officials decided that foot-washing stations had to be installed for their convenience. Yet whether there is one Muslim student or one thousand in the two affected high schools does not matter. Providing special prayer rooms for Muslim students, and special facilities for Muslims to engage in ritual foot-washing before saying their five daily prayers, is to favor Islam over other religions, and thus violates the Establishment Clause.

Let the constitutional challenges begin to this attempt to build these prayer rooms and foot-washing stations for Muslims only. Providing a neutral space for students to pray voluntarily is generally considered an accommodation of religious freedom, whereas setting aside a dedicated, school-endorsed “prayer room” for Muslims or providing foot-washing stations can be seen as violating the Establishment Clause.

This Muslim-pandering has to be stopped right now, in those Minneapolis suburbs, to prevent similar for-Muslims-only facilities being built in public schools all over the country, that will have the effect of promoting Islam above all other religions to impressionable young people.

  1. The parents who cannot take their kids out of the public system, should sue. Put on the mad murray ohair hat and demand that the religion is removed from the classes, and no special rooms….funded by taxpayers…

    Years ago, some argued that it was good that Bible reading should not be allowed in school because the ban would also keep islime out of the schools. That argument has been proven to not hold even a thimbleful of water.

    What works to keep peaceful Christians from talking, reading, praying in public is not even tried with the monsters of islime.

      Foot washing (also known as pedilavium) is a religious rite observed by several faiths including Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism. Within Christianity, the practice derives from the scriptures of the New Testament (John 13:1-15; 1 Timothy 5:10) in which Jesus tells his followers to wash-each others’ feet as a sign of humility and brotherhood. In fact, Jesus himself, washes the apostles’ feet to exemplify humility and servitude.

      • Christians are not required to wash their feet before prayer, though. There are a few denominations which combine foot-washing with Holy Communion (i.e., it happens in church) but most, if they do it at all, will do it on Maundy Thursday. There would therefore never be any question of installing footwashing facilities fpr Christians.

        • Jesus was not commanding His disciples to wash their feet or those of others. He was teaching a lesson in attitude. A lesson in humility, a lesson that all are equal in God’s sight and none are superior.

  2. What I find even more frightening are social studies teachers requiring non-Muslim students to recite the shahada and to write it out in transliteration as part of their studies. Most non-Muslims are not aware that this is considered sufficient to effect conversion to Islam. If the social studies teachers have been aware of this fact then this is all the more troubling.

    • I believe that saying the Shahada summons demons – the Apostle Paul identified non-Judaic religions as demonic, in his discussion of eating food sacrificed to idols (1 Cor 10). This also explains the Islamic view that reading the Qur’an in a building claims that building for Allah (cathedrals holding inter-faith services, please note).

    • The atheists howl and *sue* when a group of students pray before a ball game, or a student mentions Jesus in a speech. Even though the ruling by the Court long ago was about teachers promoting Christianity in some way…even just having a Bible on their desks became a ‘crime.’.

      And we know by now that muzzies are gaining special privileges….and law-breaking allowances…so , no, the Christians are not likely to get any thing special.

      • No it was not allowed. There was an attempt three or four years ago, it lead to heated debate in the school district in Minnesota.

        It was eventually turned down without much fuss because it is a public school, and we understand the rules and should respect them.

        The parents who wanted that were told to transfer to private Christian schools. But this is a different situation because Minnesota is very afraid of this group. The fear is palpable.

        Whether you like Muslims or not, you must admit they are very strong, community driven and get what they want. We christians are the opposite unfortunately. I was not able to send all of my children to private school and would really have wished our district could have been more open to the community having more of a say in the education system.

        We are just democrats up here, what can we do. I used to believe in it, we welcomed the complaining Somalians with our churches and our resources. And they already out ran us as you can see, they get their Islamic privledge and we don’t.

      • So, where are all the atheists who I thought would be angry about this? As far as I can tell, they are completely oblivious to any threat and still think of Christianity as the only threat that they need to worry about.

          I think you misunderstand the culture of Minnesota atheists. Tim general, Christianity is blamed for the many ills of our society, and Islam in their eyes is a peaceful victim.

          The Somalians are victims of the Christian world. So, when these Islamic requests started popping up, the atheists did not just cave to them, they embraced it openly in Minnesota. You are mistaken to believe atheists are anti religious, they are anti western, anti Christian, and they actually love Islam.

          John, if you ever spoke to them about Islam, there is another way of interpreting Islam for them. Here’s what they believe.

          1. Islamic Science and Islamic knowledge- They are educated and they speak about how Islam pretty much invented many things. So, this proves Islam is positive.

          2. Muslims are good neighbors.

          3. Islamic countries are backward because of Christian aggression.

          4. Islam is actually good for atheism, because politically they can align themselves to slowly crumble Christian influence to zero.

          So Islam is definitely a good in their eyes. They don’t mind Islamists planting their flag in Minnesota at all, in fact they encourage them. In fact, so do the Christians here as well!

          That’s another topic I won’t adress right now because you would call me crazy. Take it or leave it. Christians here, yes they would absolutely support these Islamist spaces in schools, while also ducking their head and accepting that Christians do not get the same.

    • The majority don’t believe that or Want to believe that it seems. They prefer simply to choose Not to believe that and to live ‘in the dark’ I guess.

  6. And who will clean up these marvelous rooms, dedicated to the supremist diety? Will the children of the supremists lower themselves to work which can be done and paid by the dhimmis? Will a special Muslim attendant be required?

    And what will be the additional cost to build these rooms, $100,000+ ?

    Obviously, no prayer room is required for Christians whose faith is actively damaged by the education system. Isn’t it of note that teachers will attack Christian beliefs yet never do the same to Muslims out of fear? Muslims use the education system to religiously ritualize their children with prayer kwhile the education system destroys Christian faith. Separation of religion and state? Hardly.

    It’s just another landmark, staking a claim for Islam.

  8. The First Amendment, to the U.S. Constitution, in the Bill of Rights, contains “the establishment” clause.
    It forbids the U.S. Government, at any level, to favor any religion by supporting that religion.
    The government may not “establish” a given religion by favoring that religion.

    Therefore, government run schools cannot use tax payers funds to build prayer rooms and foot washing stations for a particular religion, i.e. Islam, or any other religion.

    Christians are well aware of the implications of this Constitutional protection of all from some. The some in this instance is Islam. Let there be no hesitation to use the “establishment clause” for the protection it was designed for. Let us all join together in defeating this onslaught from Islam. Let us use the best and wisest weapon at hand – the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights.

    No establishment of the religion of Islam in U.S. schools per the First Amendment in the Bill of Rights.

    There will, no doubt, be legal suits and demonstrations. I hope we can form a united front for our Constitution which is our best, and only, legal protection against this onslaught from Islam.

    Do they have a Jewish prayer room?
    Do they have a Hinduism prayer room?
    If the answer is no then they should close the Islamic prayer room and foot wash. If this is a public school this should be illegal.

  11. This is nonsense. it is not absoutely necessary for them to pray and do their ablutions five time a day. When Moaham made his alleged trip to meet Allah. Allah wanted far more prayer time but Moh is alleged to have argued with allah and get the number down! Sounds ridiculous doesn’t it. So does most of the religion
