It’s the war of the words, and the lunatics are winning. Speak or write about a “Pakistani grooming gang,” much less a “Muslim rape gang,” and you will be slapped down for “Islamophobia.” The correct term, as far as the political and media establishments are concerned, is “Asian grooming gang.” Better still, don’t refer to “grooming gangs” at all, as the phrase only stirs up race hatred among white Britishers who, as we all know, are already racists to the core. Try to delay any investigation into the phenomenon, just the way the police forces of a dozen British cities and downs have done in the interest of “social cohesion.” Please refer to Hamas “militants,” and not “terrorists.” Please refer to Hezbollah “militants” and not “terrorists.” It’s a much nicer word, and won’t get people mad. And besides, who is to say who is a terrorist and who is a freedom fighter? Always use the term “West Bank” and never the toponyms “Judea and Samaria,” because the latter might make people unfairly believe that there is a Jewish connection to that land, which of course can’t possibly be allowed. That would be loading the dice. And do try to remember that it is the “Holy Qur’an” and not the “Qur’an,” and also that the founder of Islam should always be referred to as “the Prophet Muhammad,” and not merely as “Muhammad.”
Now here’s the latest war of the words, that comes to us from Sweden. It seems that a journalist working for the state broadcasting network, Sveriges Television, did something awful. While reporting the news from the U.K., Anna-Maja Persson referred to the migrants crossing the English Channel illegally as “illegal migrants.” There were complaints. And a reprimand.

Sweden’s public broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT) has been reprimanded by the country’s media watchdog after one of its correspondents referred to migrants crossing the English Channel as “illegal migrants” during a news segment.
The ruling was issued by the Review Board, following complaints about a report broadcast on SVT’s flagship news program “Rapport” in September 2025.
The feature covered anti-immigration protests in the United Kingdom against hotels housing asylum seekers. During the segment, SVT’s U.K. correspondent Anna-Maja Persson stated, “So far this year, a record number of illegal migrants have crossed the English Channel to the U.K., where asylum seekers are being placed in hotels, among other things.”
As Samnytt reported, two viewers reported the broadcast, arguing that the expression “illegal migrants” was evaluative and created the impression that people seeking asylum had committed crimes.
What does “evaluative” mean? Was the term “illegal migrant” a baseless calumny, designed to harm the image of those innocent channel-crossers, or was “illegal migrant” simply a statement of fact? And isn’t it also a fact that entering a country illegally — that is, without proper authorization — is a “crime”? Not a big crime, as crimes go, but still a crime. Illegally entering a country — any country, not just Sweden — is worthy not of a prison sentence, but of prompt no-nonsense deportation back to the “illegal migrant’s” country of origin.
In its response to the Review Board, SVT maintained that the wording was intended to reflect the legal classification under British law of the method of entry — not to describe the individuals concerned as criminals. The broadcaster argued that those arriving via irregular routes lack valid entry permits and that this form of entry is described as illegal migration in UK legislation, including under the Illegal Migration Act 2023.
Under the legislation, a migrant is considered to be “in breach of immigration control” if they enter “without leave where leave is required,” enter “via irregular routes such as small boats,” or arrive “without valid entry clearance.”…
There it is, the definition of what constitutes “illegal migration.”
Despite the legal definition, Sweden’s Review Board rejected that defense. In its decision, it stated that even if British authorities classify the phenomenon as illegal migration, that “does not legitimize the use of the term illegal migrant for individuals who arrive in the country in this way.”
“In the opinion of the committee, this designation was both misleading in violation of the requirement for objectivity and evaluative in violation of the requirement for impartiality,” the board wrote, as cited by Journalisten….
You are not objective, you are not impartial, if you use the loaded term “illegal migrant” for an “illegal migrant.” Why draw attention to that aspect of someone’s being? By reductively reducing him to only one aspect of his being — his illegal migrancy —and in so doing choosing to overlook all of his good and law-abiding qualities, aren’t you thereby showing your anti-immigrant bias? I’m sure such a person has done many more legal than illegal things in his life, so why not focus on them? If you call him an “illegal migrant,” the implication is clear: you are biased against him, for otherwise why would you go out of your way to describe “an illegal migrant” as an “illegal migrant”? Isn’t that obvious?
Your head, it simply swirls. Even though this kind of illegal migration is unfeelingly called by so many “illegal migration,” that doesn’t mean use of the term “illegal migrant” should be “legitimized.” It hurts feelings. It makes illegal migrants feel bad. Haven’t they suffered enough? So stop using it. What was it Humpty Dumpty said to Alice? Ah yes, here it is: “When I use a word,’ Humpty Dumpty said in rather a scornful tone, ‘it means just what I choose it to mean — neither more nor less.’” Or as Gracie Allen said, “Before the behind yet under the vast above, the world is in tears and tomorrow is Tuesday.” Remember that, the next time you are thoughtlessly tempted to call an illegal migrant an “illegal migrant.”

The term “criminal” could be used since it is a crime to enter the border of more or less all nations and in most cases a judge can issue deportation for the punishment. Compared to that, “illegal alien”, or, “illegal migrant”, seems mild enough.
