London: Sikh Restaurant Owner Harassed and Arrested for Not Selling Halal Food

A fierce debate over food practices and religious freedom has erupted after the controversy surrounding Rangrez, an Indian restaurant in London, whose Sikh owner faced massive harassment by Muslim groups after refusing to serve halal meat, and was later arrested. The case involving restaurateur Harman Singh Kapoor has triggered debate in the United Kingdom and abroad about how the religious eating habits of Muslims intersect with multicultural societies, and how they limit the commercial freedoms of non-Muslims.

Kapoor, who ran Rangrez for nearly 16 years, publicly stated that his restaurant would not serve halal meat because of his religious beliefs as a Sikh. In Sikh tradition, many adherents avoid meat slaughtered according to ritualistic religious procedures, such as halal, instead preferring jhatka meat, where the animal is killed instantly with a single strike. Kapoor maintained that his policy was simply an expression of his own faith, and that business owners should be free to decide what food they sell.

However, the announcement triggered a backlash from Muslims within and outside the UK. Videos circulated online showing Muslims demanding halal meat gathering outside the restaurant and attacking Kapoor. According to Kapoor, the restaurant was repeatedly targeted by protests and heated arguments with Muslim groups who objected to the “no halal” policy. Kapoor added that the restaurant had been vandalized and intimidated. His wife and daughter were also sent rape threats. Miscreants tossed eggs at the restaurant.

The dispute soon moved beyond in-person confrontations. Kapoor alleged that coordinated campaigns were organized against his restaurant online, resulting in waves of negative reviews on social media and review portals. Supporters of the restaurateur claimed the campaign appeared designed to damage Rangrez’s reputation and business prospects.

The growing tensions eventually forced him to shut down the establishment after more than a decade and a half in operation. For Kapoor, the decision represented the end of a business he had dedicated years to building and a blow to his livelihood in a Western country that has been hijacked by Muslims who once arrived as immigrants, but have since acquired substantial demographic and institutional presence within society and administrative structures.

The situation intensified further when police detained Kapoor shortly after he announced the closure. Video footage of his arrest circulated widely online, fueling debate about whether authorities had treated him unfairly. The arrest raised troubling questions about freedom of expression and the religious practices of non-Muslims in London, and demonstrates how Muslims react with hostility when followers of other religions demand the right to abide by their own religious practices, even if it is within their own property and premises.

The Rangrez case further illustrates a deeper cultural contradiction. Muslim groups in every country emphasize that halal food is a religious obligation and that Muslim consumers must be able to access halal options in public markets. However, when non-Muslims request their own religious dietary alternatives, such as jhatka meat, the demand is portrayed as divisive, discriminatory, or communal.

The debate has also resonated in India, where discussions about halal and jhatka meat have grown in recent years. India’s food supply chain increasingly includes halal certification, with reduced alternatives for people who prefer non-halal products, making it impossible to find jhatka meat. This expansion has, in fact, gone beyond meat and now includes processed foods, spices, packaged non-vegetarian products, and even cosmetics and wellness items.

One of the most widely discussed incidents involved the Sabarimala Temple and Tirupati Temple, where jaggery packets used to prepare prasadam (a religious offering) were found to carry a halal stamp from the supplier. Devotees questioned how an Islamic religious certification could be linked to sacred offerings made to Hindu deities and later consumed by Hindu devotees. Critics said the incident exposed how deeply the rapidly expanding halal certification industry has penetrated India’s commercial supply chains, even in spaces traditionally associated with Hindu religious practices.

Another aspect of the debate concerns the financial structure of halal certification. Certification bodies typically charge fees for facility inspections and for issuing halal compliance certificates. The global halal economy, covering food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, tourism, and finance, is valued in the trillions of dollars. Because the sector spans many industries and countries, regulatory supervision varies widely, leading to periodic debates regarding accountability and governance. Non-Muslims may not want to contribute to this economy, but they are often stripped of that choice.

The Rangrez controversy, therefore, brings one fundamental question to the fore: how can multicultural societies protect the religious rights of non-Muslims when demographic shifts alter the balance and Muslims replace the natural majority of a geography? The closure of Rangrez is a worrisome example of how Islamic groups can eventually grow in influence and dictate terms to non-Muslim communities. In this view, people will be forced to conform to Islamic norms regardless of their own faith, and those who object run the risk of facing hostility, intimidation, or backlash from pro-Sharia elements, and of eventually losing everything.

  1. Britain looks like even more of a shariah state than a Saudi Arabia or a Qatar. I’d imagine that if a non-muslim wanted to open up a non-halal restaurant in those 2 countries and clearly call it that, that they would be allowed to run it, and nobody would bother

    As for India, I try to maximize any non-halal things I can get when I’m there, and for meats, I try to buy any pork – be it pork steaks/chops, sausages, bacon, salami, pepperoni (which in India doesn’t contain beef) and be sure that it’s not been touched by a Mohammedan

The totalitarian Sharia face of Islam is in full force as Non-Muslims are expected to follow Islamic Law or face extinction since even individual Muslims can enforce Islamic Law in the land(Qur’an 9:5, 29, 111; 49:15, etc.). Otherwise, Non-Muslims are forced to leave the land through lawfare, threats, force, discrimination, and terrorism until failure, bankruptcy, and poverty are inflicted on the Non-Muslims. Allah in Qur’an 8:39 says, “And engage in war with them[Non-Muslims] until there will not be sedition and the religion will be completely to Allah…”

  3. When kosher certification began labeling almond and oat milk as “diary” many Jews began to grumble about the “kosher nostra.” But what happened to the poor Sikh man amounts to state-sanctioned religious persecution. And India needs to address its own “dietary jihad.”

  5. Very sad story. London has always been the best place to go for Indian cuisine – in my opinion. For the owner who spent years building a successful restaurant in a large competitive market it’s a major personal loss. For the public it’s a minor loss. For the UK Muslim community I guess it’s a ‘win’ against the rest of us.
    Will people in London continue to allow their beliefs to be challenged by the Muslim community – or will they exhibit a backbone and stand up for their rights?

    • Avoid “Indian” cuisine in London: a lot of Pakis/Bangladeshis label their shops “Indian” to get Hindus & Sikhs to go there as well. It’s also an open question of how many of them are non-halal, like Rangrez was

      • I’m still mourning the wonderful fish & chip bar which used to function 40 yeaŕs ago under Charing X Bridge at the foot of Villiers Street. The most traditional of English foods, and it was a godsend for unfortunates sleeping rough…

    For context, this was a younger Churchill, not even 30 years old, and yet to rise to the political heights history would remember him for.

    Despite that fact, his observations regarding Islam are as timeless and politically astute as any by the British statesman. The quote was posted to social media platform X by Lebanese Canadian commenter Gad Saad, who took to mocking the left and current British Prime Minister Keir Starmer by using one of their favorite insults against Churchill.

    “Individual Muslims may show splendid qualities, but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world,” the quote said.

    “Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science, the science against which it had vainly struggled, the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome,” it continued.
    Before delving further, note the full quote.

    It would likely land Churchill in prison today.

    “How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries.     The intellectual class champions a secular world without values endowed by the Creator.

    Thought leaders increasingly defend multiculturalism over a Christian code of ethics.

    The only moral grounding allowed to be espoused unapologetically in Europe is one of acceptance — and this is hardly a meaningful grounding for a just society.

    Europe now should remember Christ’s words in Matthew 7:25-27.

And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.     I disagree with a small part of what Churchill wrote: Christianity didn’t fight science. Proven by the very words of Jesus quoted in the article about the house, rain and winds. A little bit of science.
    It was imperfect men without full understanding of Christ who ‘fought science.’

  7. I lived in Saudi Arabia from 1979 to 1981. Long before the muslims took over Europe and the U.S. There was a shop in the city that we lived in that sold meat. If you knew how to ask for it, you could buy pork there. This is a case of in your face demonstrations. If the muslims want halal food they should go back to the country they came from.

    • They don’t necessarily want to eat it….but they want it to be the only thing available to infidels.

    • I have heard that there is a restaurant or a shop in Dubai where pork is available if one wants it. Only thing: one has to be a non-muslim to be able to buy/order it

      That’s the point I was making above: it’s easier to have haram food in countries like the UAE than in the UK

  8. If you’re in the UK, Sikhs christians Hindus atheist, you must adjust to the new reality. Sharia is pushing pushing pushing. It’s safer to just do halal, that’s the message for others.

    This will spread they will show up place to place to demand halal. Because they have the entire government system behind them, to enforce sharia law. Watch carefully this past year.

    The police always shows up with the Islamists these days. They’re one group, they’re the force for Britain. Behind them, the Muslims have the entire British military I believe, just in case the British rise up, the military will come in and crush them. They have the judges as well, the welfare system and the politicians behind them. You , you have nothing. It’s all against you if you’re a Brit.       It’s a common misconception that “halal” only means an inhumane slaughter of animals. As you probably know, “halal” means “allowed, sanctioned”, and it covers anything that is advocated/condoned by qur’an/sunnah

      As Ashlyn pointed out in the article, there have been halal certifications on all sorts of things, from processed foods, packaged vegetarian products (I believe the “non” was a typo in her article), cosmetics, wellness products, pharmaceuticals…. Even brands associated w/ Ayurvedic products, such as Himalaya, carry them. It’s hit insane levels when temple offerings are “certified”, and given the spitting habit of muslims when it comes to food sold/given to infidels, it’s justified that Hindus take umbrage at muslims selling flowers or sweets to Hindu worshipers outside temples

      How does this happen? Well, for a cult that frowns on “bida” (innovation), this is one of the, if not the, most bida things they could have done. First, they adapt a concept introduced in the 70’s by Booz-Allen Hamilton of supply-chain economics, and then they require that all participants in the supply chain of something employ a certain percentage of muslims. Once they do, then that end product gets one of those certification stamps. So companies that willingly participate in this, which includes having to discriminate against infidels when it comes to employment, are a part of the problem

      There should be pressure on governments – maybe muslims could drive this – to require that any product should be clearly stamped not only as halal, but also those that don’t comply should be stamped as non-halal. That way, everyone can make informed choices of what they want to buy. In the meantime, as infidels, we should just stop buying anything that says “halal” on the label – it’s not just about meat! Once companies see that more people are unwilling to buy halal, they’ll stop having just a single inventory bin making all products halal for simplicity, and have to pick which market they want to service

  10. So does this now mean that if a Muslim run restaurant advertises that it does not have pork products on their menu that the owner will now be arrested?.

    • Good idea! Force them to carry pork, and offer pork steaks, sausages and bacon!

      Not that I’d eat in a mohammedan restaurant in the first place

The other problem with enforcing halal food, apart from the certification industry, forcing it on those who do not want it, and the question of whether is counts as food sacrificed to an idol (the butchers say “Allahu Akbar” whilst slaughtering it) is that only a Muslim may conduct halal slaughter, thus driving non-Muslim butchers out of business, and enriching people who may well give alms to Hamas.

  19. As an aside to this, it may interest you to know that Harman Kapoor is a staunch Tommy Robinson supporter and has given speeches at protests over Tommy’s treatment.
    He and his wife also attend the huge ‘Unite the Kingdom” rallies that Tommy organises in London.
    I have met Harman and spoken to him on a couple of occasions at these events and other protests. Really nice, genuine man. Bravely outspoken.
    He has had previous trouble at this restaurant and death threats from Muslims.

    Sadly we see little support from the British Sikh community at these rallies and Harman has been been criticised by them for attending. His wife recounted that she was told to be careful as the patriots “didn’t like brownies”.
    They are actually very popular among the crowds that go.

    He made a video of himself brandishing a knife and saying he was prepared to defend himself and his family. I guess this was why he was arrested.

    In Britain today it is unwise even unlawful to make adverse comments about Muslims.

    Even Harman’s own minority status did not protect him.

      You confirmed exactly what I suspected in my first post above! Most British Sikhs seem to be of the Khalistan variety – claiming large swathes of India that are not Sikh, but having no claims in Pakistan on territories that were! Not remotely surprising that they’re not standing behind him! I used to respect the Sikhs. But after the resurgence of the Khalistan demands from 2021, I no longer do.

      Mr Harman Singh Kapoor is a rare exception to that rule, given his willingness to stand up to muslims, rather than gang up w/ them. Aside from brandishing a “kirpan” (that’s what they call their 🗡️), I think his above tweet calling them “1nbreds” is what got him into trouble w/ the ministry for the promotion of virtue and the prevention of vice – which is what Britain’s Home office needs to be now branded

      If there are any parts of Britain not yet infested by these vermin, I hope he manages to re-establish his restaurant there

    This was a private restaurant. It was Indian. To force Hindus in an Indian restaurant to serve food that is muslim approved is denying the Hindus their religious rights.

    Every one of these people who are not muslim but enforcing these muslim laws are betraying their own people and culture to appease islam.

    Winston Churchill said,” appeasement is feeding others to the crocodile and hoping he eats you last”. They have to know they will eventually be destroyed by islam themselves. So why are they aiding them?
